How to Make Your Own Silicone Slab Mold

05:20
How I made my own silicone slab mold for cold process soap-making using Soft 107-Purple Catalyst (for soaps and candles) from hobbysilicone.com. Directions for calculating the amount of silicone needed for your project can be found on their website as well. The size/shape/texture of your canvas or item that you hot-glue to your foam board will be how your soap turns out.

Making Gradient Cold Process Soap - Three Color Cold Process Tilted Tiger Stripe

04:23
In this video, I show how I made "Sweet Nothings" three-color gradient/ombre cold process soap using the tilted tiger technique. To answer a few questions that may come up- Q: Where can I find funnel pitchers like the ones used in the video? A: Those are Norpro 3040 pitchers (3.5 cu. capacity). They are available at Amazon.com Q: Why tilt the mold sideways? A: This technique is called the Tilted Tiger Stripe. (Or Tilted Tiger Swirl) I have shaky hands, and pouring down the side of the mold helps keep my colors from going awry. _________________________________________ Want to know more about Spicy Pinecone? ANOTHER way to make molds using silicone caulk. :) I used Red Devil from Dollar General for this one. It worked great, whereas another brand I also tried did not. Definitely go with Red Devil. This mold is NOT for food items.

Making Coconut Oil Sea Salt Bars by Spicy Pinecone

05:31
I show you how I make a batch of Coconut Oil Sea Salt bars with added calendula extract, Vitamin E and kaolin clay. To address a few topics that may come up: 1.) The slab mold can be tricky to unmold salt bars from. Salt bars are crumbly by nature when you first unmold them. Making them in a loaf mold can make them difficult to cut. If you think you may have an issue, try silicone individual cavity molds. They pop right out, no problem. 2.) Yup, I had a mica spill. I mix my micas with liquid oil from the batch I'm making, and don't use much. I always say, "If you're not making a mess, you're not having fun." :) 3.) You can find information on superfatting your soap by doing a Google search. SoapCalc.net is a great tool for those looking to adjust soap recipes to fit their needs. 4.) Please research soapmaking safety tips before attempting to make any type of soap, and always wear gloves and eye protection. 5.) In a salt bar, salt is typically anywhere from 50-100% of the oil weight. Adjust as desired. Coconut oil soaps set up fast and hard, so be sure to have your ingredients measured out and ready. Ice Dye Tutorial - How to Ice Dye by Spicy Pinecone

09:28
In this DIY video, I show you how to create colorful projects using the ice-dye technique. With ice dye, you can create custom, one-of-a-kind pieces that are bright, colorful and fun. Supplies You Will Need for this Project: - Item to Dye. (Either fabric or ready-to-wear clothing made of natural, plant-based fibers such as cotton, bamboo, hemp, etc.) - Dye. I use Dharma Fiber Reactive Powdered dyes. These can be found at http://www.dharmatrading.com (Spicy Pinecone is not affiliated with Dharma Trading and did not receive any compensation for making this video. Everything used in this video was 100% purchased outright.) - Mask. NIOSH-approved mask to keep out powders when mixing up soda ash and placing dye powders. This is NOT optional. Dyes are harmful if you breathe them in. - Soda Ash. This is a dye fixative. This substance is mildly caustic, and you'll want to wear gloves and a mask (some people also choose to wear goggles) when mixing it up. - Gloves. - Spoons. Either plastic spoons or "regular" spoons. - Stirring utensil. Non-reactive metal spoon (such as stainless steel) or wooden tool. - Bucket or Bowl for soda ash solution. -Storage Container with a locking lid. This is to hold your dye project and keep the runoff water contained. (Dispose of runoff dye water as per dye manufacturer's instructions.) -Rack or shelf made of plastic or non-reactive metal (such as stainless steel). This will elevate your project off of the bottom of your storage container and keep it out of the muddy "runoff" dye water. Keeping colors bright and crisp. - Ice. Have more on hand than you think you'll need. I buy a backup bag, just in case. ;-) **Please note- ANY items used for dyeing should only ever be used for dyeing. DO NOT use any dye items for any other application such as food preparation, etc. It is not safe.** Optional items you'll see in this video: - Large plastic tub. - Large stainless steel rack. This was placed over my large plastic tub. Also purchased from a restaurant supply store. I BELIEVE it was some kind of frying rack, but I may be wrong. It was just large and stainless steel... so it works. ________________________________________ Steps for Ice Dyeing: 1.) Prewash your fabric if you're going to (not necessary, but you can) and start preparing your soda ash solution. Wearing gloves, goggles, and a mask, mix up your soda ash solution using the supplier's recommended amount. (I use 1 cup of soda ash per gallon of warm water, but some suppliers recommend 2 cups per gallon.) Warm water works best. Stir until cloudiness disappears and solution is clear. 2.) Soak fabric/clothing item for 15-30 minutes in soda ash solution. Make sure item is fully submerged. 3.) Wearing proper protective gear, wring out soda ash solution. Get as much out as you can. You do not want your fabric soaking wet... there should be no "drips". Now, you can either set your fabric aside in a safe place to fully dry, or, if it's just slightly damp... move on to Step 4. 4.) Scrunch up fabric. Textured fabric should have textured side (or "right side") up. 5.) Add ice. Cover surface area of fabric with an even layer of ice. If you're concerned about even coverage, you can build a cardboard "ring" that fits around your project to help hold the ice. 6.) Wearing proper protection, add dye powders. 7.) Let sit for 24-hours. 8.) Rinse project in cold water until it runs clear. (Dispose of dye runoff water as per manufacturer's instructions.) 9.) Wash project with detergent on hottest machine setting. I do an extra wash to make sure all excess dye is gone. Do not wash with other laundry! 10.) Dry and enjoy! ________________________________________ Want to know more about Spicy Pinecone? Making Galaxy Cold Process Soap by Spicy Pinecone

06:20
Making of Galaxy Cold Process Soap by Spicy Pinecone. This is a combination of a few different swirls, combined with some mica painting techniques. To address a few questions that may come up: I didn't like the texture of the soap when I unmolded, so I chose to plane it instead of steam it. Planing removed some of the stars and sparkle, so I added more after planing was complete. Mica added to the soap while the batter was wet was mixed with oil. Mica added after the soap was unmolded was mixed with 91% rubbing alcohol and added with a (clean and unused) toothbrush by flicking, and then "painted" with a rubber-tipped color blending tool. A paintbrush would work fine. The swirl technique was inspired by Clyde Yoshida's "Vibrant Amber" soap. Bath Truffle Tutorial

12:42
Bath Truffle Tutorial by Spicy Pinecone. I show you how to make a simple bath truffle. Wear gloves if you are making these to sell. Also, you are free to sell items using this recipe, but please credit Spicy Pinecone. (It's the polite thing to do, ya'll.) ;) TIPS- Make in low-humidity, cool conditions. These are bath melts, they will melt in higher temperatures... so be sure to make and ship cool. Also, if you experience trouble with your truffles swelling, try cooling your butters/oils before adding to dry ingredients. Spicy Pinecone Bath Truffle Recipe: 10 oz. Baking Soda 5 oz. Citric Acid 6 oz. Cocoa Butter (This can be adjusted up or down, depending on how "liquid" you'd like your batter.) .20 oz. - .35 oz. Fragrance Oil - (Check safe usage rating on your fragrance.) Skin safe colorant ** You can also add Polysorbate 80 or E-wax to the recipe if you would like an emulsifier. It's totally up to you and recipes are fun to tweak. ______________________ Want to know more about Spicy Pinecone? Making 100% Tallow Soap by Spicy Pinecone

05:58
In this video, I show how I made my "Clean Cotton" 100% Tallow Soap. I used beef tallow for this soap, and replaced part of my lye water with heavy cream and extracts. Despite tallow being a solid oil (at room temp), I had a fair amount of time to work... even using a fragrance that was said to accelerate trace. To figure out your recipe, calculate your mold volume (LxWxHx0.39). Then, input the oil (tallow) into a soap calculator at 100%. Soap calculators can be found by using Google. Superfat percentages are up to the maker. At least 5% is what generally recommended, but it's completely up to you if you'd like it higher. This soap does not produce a lot of bubbles. It will bubble some, but the lather is more of a creamy, lotion-like consistency. Very smooth. ____________________ Want to know more about Spicy Pinecone? Making Solar Flare Cold Process Soap by Spicy Pinecone - Soap the Rainbow Challenge

07:06
In this Spicy Pinecone video, I show you the technique I used to make my "Solar Flare" cold process soap for Bramble Berry's #SoaptheRainbow "Orange Week" tutorial. I chose to use Bramble Berry colorants and fragrance to complete this soap (see product links below). Energy fragrance oil is slow-moving and has a bright-citrusy fragrance. Nothing says "Energy" like the sun... so I used that as my inspiration and ran with it. :) Want to know more about Spicy Pinecone? Sweetapolita Sprinkle Haul - Spicy Pinecone

I thought it was time for an awesome sprinkle soap! So I drew up some plans and used it as an excuse to go wild on a sprinkle purchase from a supplier that Iโ€™ve been eyeballing for MONTHS. Got the sprinkles in, and will be posting a sprinkle soap video very soon! (And, honestly, theyโ€™re not ALL for soap. I like to bake too.) ;-) Sprinkles purchased from: https://sweetapolita.myshopify.com (Sprinkles were purchased by me. Nothing was given in exchange for making this video.) Keep in mind that if you are looking to bake with them, the twinkle sprinkle medleys are for decoration only in the United States. _______________________________________________________ ๐Ÿ‘If you like this video, please give us a "thumbs up" and click the subscribe button! ๐Ÿ‘ _______________________________________________________ Find some of the supplies I use/recommend for soapmaking at my Amazon store*: https://www.amazon.com/shop/sarahmilroy *- The link to my Amazon store is an affiliate link. Never make claims with your bath bombs. (Meaning, do not say that it can fix or cure anything.) If you do, it makes it a "drug" and you can get into major trouble. I add colloidal oatmeal and other gentle ingredients to bath bombs for people with sensitive skin, but I do not claim that it will fix ANYTHING. 2.) Make sure that you are using approved colorants if you are selling. Food coloring is great for at-home use, but if you're selling, make sure you are using colorants that are cosmetic-grade and approved. Easy Coconut Oil Soap (with recipe) - Spicy Pinecone

10:57
In this video, I teach you to make an easy Coconut Oil Soap. The recipe is extremely simple and makes for a wonderful, bubbly, and hard bar of soap. My older coconut oil soap video had a lot of comments and questions, so I thought I'd update it by making a new video with more detailed information. Coconut Oil Soap with 20% Superfat. Coconut Oil- 100% of Base oils Superfat at 20% and have soap calculator calculate your water and lye amounts depending on your mold volume. To calculate mold volume- L x W x H x .39 Usually, I refrain from using more than 20% of coconut oil in any soap recipe, as it can be drying. However, when you superfat at 20%, it makes for a very conditioning bar of soap. Use a soap calculator like soapcalc.net or SoapMaker 3 to calculate your percentages for your particular mold, OR, if you are using a mold like mine, see below: For my exact mold, using only 3 ingredients and no optional ingredients: 42 oz. Coconut Oil 14.80 oz. Distilled Water 6.05 oz. Sodium Hydroxide (a.k.a. โ€œlyeโ€) This recipe Calculated in SoapMaker 3. Youโ€™ll find that sometimes calculating in other soap calculators that the numbers differ somewhat. DO NOT MEASURE BY VOLUME. Please use weight when measuring for a soap recipeโ€ฆ it is safer and more accurate. If you want to add other liquids to your soap (as I did with coconut milk), subtract that amount from your water amount, but make sure you still have enough distilled water to safely dissolve your lye. You also have the option of replacing the water completely with coconut milk (or other liquid such as goatโ€™s milk, etc.) and can do so by freezing your coconut milk into ice cubes and SLOWLY (very slowly) adding a bit of lye at a time until the ice cubes are melted and the lye is dissolved. ๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿšจ๐ŸšจAlways wear gloves, goggles, and long-sleeve shirts when making soap. If you have never made soap before, please refer to Soap Queenโ€™s lye safety videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yR6ttCSrLJI ๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿšจ If you use a fragrance oil with no vanillin, your soap should stay white. As with any fragrance oil, test prior to making a large batch. Some fragrances (even with no vanillin) may turn soap off-white or beige. When Soap Gremlins Attack - Sometimes Batches Don't Go as Planned - Spicy Pinecone

11:03
Well, sometimes you have a great, soapy vision... and then sometimes that vision goes FLYING out the window faster than you can say, "Soap on a Stick". While this wasn't the WORST gremlin attack ever, it certainly didn't make me happy. With that said, there were things I could have done to prevent it. Soaping lower (I soaped higher than I normally do with this batch), stirring in fragrance oil at trace instead of adding to batter, etc. Live and learn, right? For those who think I never have a batch go crazy, well, I totally do. Most people don't post their gremlins, but soaping is nuts sometimes.... ____________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________ Want to know more about Spicy Pinecone? Making Sweet Berry Soap Cupcakes by Spicy Pinecone

07:09
In this video, I show you how I made my "Sweet Berry" soap cupcakes. It's been a while since I've made a batch of cupcake soaps, and I wanted to play with something fun and fruity. I scented the soap with two different fragrance oils. A "sweet berry rhubarb" fragrance oil for the bottom and a raspberry vanilla for the top. Melt and pour berries were added for a "drool-worthy" effect, and I SOMEHOW managed not to add glitter. (I don't know how, it was a huge struggle for me.) Could not find my large circle piping tip for the life of me, but made do with the smaller one. It smells amazing either way! -Molds are ones that I purchased, but I also have videos that show you how to make your own. -Fragrance oils and colorants from Bramble Berry. -For strawberries (I also made raspberries, but they wouldn't fit), most rich red micas work just fine. Blueberries and blackberries are a bit tricker. You'll have to play with your ratios, but a 1:1 dark blue/black for blueberries and a 4:1 black/purple for blackberries seems to be a good place to start. I do not have a specific colorant ratio, I just mess with it until it looks right to me. ________________________________________ Want to know more about Spicy Pinecone?
