Torquing Wheels and Why It Is Important - EricTheCarGuy

02:42
This is a quick tip response to my disc brake video. A very observant viewer mentioned this important fact that I forgot to put into the original video so I will correct that here. Wheel torque probably accounts for at least some percentage of persistent brake vibrations. Thanks to BigBlockMustang for pointing this out, and thank you for watching. I've recently gotten to the 100 subscriber mark and hope to do something special for you in the not to distant future. If you have any show ideas please post a response to this video or send me a PM with your questions. How To Perform a Compression Test - EricTheCarGuy

10:00
Compression Testing and What You Can Learn From It - EricTheCarGuy Here is a video on performing a compression test on an engine to assess it's mechanical condition. An engines ability to compress air and fuel is directly proportional to it's performance since an engine is nothing more than an air compressor once you take away all the controls. A compression test is a good general test that will give you an idea of the engine's overall health but it does not give specific information on what the problem is should there be one, for that a "leak down test" would be required, here is a link to that video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgrfT0LFMhc However if you find yourself looking for the source of a performance problem with an engine, this is a great place to start. This test is often overlooked in favor of looking at the fuel or ignition system, I think that's a mistake, if an engine can't perform mechanically no amount of electronics will make that better. Recently, I hit the 500 subscriber mark and I'd like to thank all of my subscribers past, present, and hopefully in the future for that. I enjoy making these videos and the fact that you seem to like watching them means a lot to me. So, thanks for subscribing, rating, and commenting, those little contributions make it all worth while. --- Click below and Stay Dirty Visit me at EricTheCarGuy.com http://ericthecarguy.com/ Visit EricTheCarGuy Forum http://www.ericthecarguy.com/forum/default.aspx Visit my Facebook Page: http://www.facebook.com/EricTheCarGuy --- Also see the video I did, "Octane Ratings and the 4 Stroke Engine Cycle" for more information on how compression works and why it is important. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8VWEwEveGTQ Thanks for watching and stay dirty ETCG Due to factors beyond the control of EricTheCarGuy, it cannot guarantee against unauthorized modifications of this information, or improper use of this information.  EricTheCarGuy assumes no liability for property damage or injury incurred as a result of any of the information contained in this video. EricTheCarGuy recommends safe practices when working with power tools, automotive lifts, lifting tools, jack stands, electrical equipment, blunt instruments, chemicals, lubricants, or any other tools or equipment seen or implied in this video.  Due to factors beyond the control of EricTheCarGuy, no information contained in this video shall create any express or implied warranty or guarantee of any particular result.  Any injury, damage or loss that may result from improper use of these tools, equipment, or the information contained in this video is the sole responsibility of the user and not EricTheCarGuy.

O2 Sensor Basics - EricTheCarGuy

This will be the beginning of a series that I'm going to do on computer controlled systems. I've had quite a bit of response to the check engine light video and I think this is the next logical step. I've covered the basic operation of an O2 or oxygen sensor as the basis for closed loop operation. This will probably not be the last time I cover information on O2 sensors, there is so much more to these than meets the eye. Things You Should Know About Differential Gears

I made this video just before assembling my Ford 8.8 differential. I thought it would be a good idea to cover some of the basics before I dove into this part of the build. One of the most important take aways from this whole thing is the difference between face hobbed, and face milled gears. How To Find A Vacuum Leak - EricTheCarGuy

05:56
Vacuum leaks are one of the biggest causes of engine performance problems. This video is pretty straight forward in it's approach to finding a vacuum leak. On thing I might mention is that not all vacuum leaks are at the engine. Some HVAC systems run on engine vacuum and can cause a leak under the dash in some cases. I've even seen vacuum operated door locks. Just be sure to be careful spraying flammable stuff on a hot engine, you don't want to take one problem and make it a whole lot worse. You can also use a spray bottle with water to do this same test. It may not be as effective, but you don't have to worry about spraying a flammable substance on a hot engine. How To Perform a Parasitic Draw Test - EricTheCarGuy

16:51
http://www.ericthecarguy.com/ This video has been a long timing coming and is one of the most requested things I get is about batteries going dead overnight so I'm very happy to finally bring you this video about the process of finding a parasitic draw which is a small drain on a battery above 50ma when the vehicle is shut off. Once you find the right fuse(s) the next step is to trace the components involved in that circuit till you find the source of the draw, you first start with a wiring diagram to give you an idea of where to start looking and then start unplugging things in that circuit to isolate the cause, it's quite scientific really a simple process of elimination. Here is a link to BBB's site that you can use to look up wiring diagrams for your application. http://www.bbbind.com/tech_database.html Good luck and if you have anymore questions check the database on my website and if you don't find what you're looking for there then post your question to my forum, here's a link. http://www.ericthecarguy.com/forum/default.aspx --- Click below and Stay Dirty Visit me at EricTheCarGuy.com http://ericthecarguy.com/ Visit EricTheCarGuy Forum http://www.ericthecarguy.com/forum/default.aspx Visit my Facebook Page: http://www.facebook.com/EricTheCarGuy --- Be safe, have fun, and stay dirty ETCG Due to factors beyond the control of EricTheCarGuy, it cannot guarantee against unauthorized modifications of this information, or improper use of this information.

Salvage Yard Tip: Don't Be a Selfish Tool!

02:21
**Sponsored Video**While I was at Pull-A-Part in Atlanta, we decided to make a video about 'salvage yard etiquette'. I had a ton of fun with Erik Tande of Velosity Labs making this video. Most of this is common sense, but you'd be surprised at how often you see this bad behavior in the salvage yard. So next time you're at the salvage yard, try and keep these helpful tips in mind. If you're not familiar with Pull-A-Part, they're a self service salvage company in the US. They have 25 yards in 12 states. I'm not just saying this, but they've become my favorite place to go for salvage parts. I suggest you check them out. How To Diagnose Exhaust Restrictions -EricTheCarGuy

06:12
Visit me at: http://www.ericthecarguy.com/ If you're experiencing poor performance, overheating, pinging, or having trouble getting up hills you might want to check to see if you have a restricted exhaust. An engine needs to breath which means that not only does it need to take in air but it also needs to get rid of the spent air, much like we do when we exhale. If it's not able to do that properly you'll experience all kinds of performance issues including lack of power. This video shows an easy non obtrusive way to check to see if you have an exhaust restriction using a vacuum gauge. A vacuum gauge can tell you a lot about how your engine is running including if you have a restricted exhaust. If you do find that you have a restriction you can confirm it by either dropping the exhaust at the manifold or removing an O2 sensor and taking it for a drive. If it runs better you likely have an exhaust restriction. Don't assume it's the catalytic converter though as I've seen mufflers and exhaust pipes cause restrictions as well. Here's a video on how to check your Catalytic Converter should you suspect it's bad. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9VZ5K8n5jj0&feature=youtu.be Stay dirty ETCG Discussion about this video: http://www.ericthecarguy.com/kunena/18-The-EricTheCarGuy-Video-Forum/42701-diagnosing-exhaust-restrictions#43854 Due to factors beyond the control of EricTheCarGuy, it cannot guarantee against unauthorized modifications of this information, or improper use of this information.

What Happens When You Don't Change Your Oil?

02:56
A lot of things happen to your engine when you don't change the oil. None of them good. In this video I highlight what happens to the rubber seals in your engine if you go extended periods between oil changes. I was able to repair this 2002 3.5RL by replacing the valve cover gaskets and cam seals. However, there still may be issues with some of the other rubber seals down the road. As I said in the video, this effects all the rubber seals in the engine, not just the valve covers. It may seem obvious, but be sure to change your oil on a regular basis to avoid the same fate. No Spark Diagnosis (Honda) - EricTheCarGuy

09:03
It's been a while, I've missed you. In this little tutorial I'm covering the basics of diagnosing a Honda ignition system. I had some technical difficulties while doing this one (I forgot to press record on a couple of occasions and missed a couple of shots) and didn't get all that I had hoped in this video. In particular I was hoping to show the use of a test light to do this diagnosis but didn't get all the footage necessary so I'll go back and shoot that at a later date. I'm hoping there is enough information here to get you started in understanding and diagnosing your ignition system so that you don't have to buy stuff you don't need trying to fix a problem. Here is a link to a place where you might find the tool I used in the video http://www.google.com/products?q=power+probe&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=SG4yS5PPGtXhlAeT8aGqBw&sa=X&oi=product_result_group&ct=title&resnum=3&ved=0CEEQrQQwAg I want to give a shout out to Greg Insco who donated his car for this video, he's trying to get on some show called Survivor next season and I helped him with his application video. You can check him and the video out via the link below. I just checked the link and I see that he hasn't posted it yet but says he will on the 28th of December 2009 so keep checking back on that. http://www.youtube.com/PUTGREGONSURVIVOR As always you can find me at EricTheCarGuy.com, as I said in the video there are new things coming to the site for 2010 so keep checking back to check those out. --- Click below and Stay Dirty Visit me at EricTheCarGuy.com http://ericthecarguy.com/ Visit EricTheCarGuy Forum http://www.ericthecarguy.com/forum/default.aspx Visit my Facebook Page: http://www.facebook.com/EricTheCarGuy --- Stay dirty ETCG Due to factors beyond the control of EricTheCarGuy, it cannot guarantee against unauthorized modifications of this information, or improper use of this information.

Restoring Headlights with 3M Kit -EricTheCarGuy

09:43
I've done other headlight restoration videos, one in fact, but when I tried this kit earlier this year I found it to be the easiest and most effective kit that I've used to date. I chose the kit for the drill but if you don't have a drill you can also get the 'human' operated kit. As you'll see in the video that kit comes with a few extra items. Just be sure to mask off the area before you begin work. If not, you might end up with some scratches on your finish. Otherwise I feel this is something any DIYer can do and get great results from. How To Unclog a Heater Core - EricTheCarGuy

09:49
Heater problems in the winter suck. But with a little diagnosis you can usually figure out the problem. Heater cores can get clogged from time to time and this video presents a solution to that problem should you have it. BTW, the product used in the video was CLR. If you KNOW you have a clogged heater core this procedure is a good thing to try to help fix the problem. However, if you are having heating problems I would suggest you check for air in the cooling system first before performing this procedure. The #1 cause of heating problems is actually air in the cooling system. The Basics of Disc Brake Service -EricTheCarGuy

10:19
This might seem like pretty basic information but it is important and often overlooked. If you have noisy brakes you might want to try this. Also, if you feel your brake performance isn't as good as it could be this might be something you could try. It's also a good idea to do this to your vehicle every so often to make sure things are working as they should. This can prevent sticking caliper slides as well as the noise I mentioned. The Honda service interval is about every 30,000 miles. I think that's a good number to start with for servicing brakes. Here are some useful links for you. How To Remove and Install Studs the 'Easy' Way

While shooting the Sonoma engine video series I needed to remove a couple of studs from the old cylinder head. I often use this '2 nut method' to do this. I thought I would make a separate video showing this process. You can also use special sockets for this but if you don't have one of those, this method will work just fine. How To Test Relays- EricTheCarGuy

08:39
How To Test Relays- EricTheCarGuy How to test relays is a video about just what it says. Every once in a while you need to test a relay and when you do it's important to check it thoroughly, if not you may think it's good and it's not, just because it 'clicks' doesn't mean it's good because that's only part of the equation. Yes you can swap it out with a known good relay and that will save you time but if you don't have a known good then this test should do the trick for you. This video is also a good way to get to know what's inside a relay and how it works so if you're curious about that this would be a good video to watch. Front Disc Brakes and How to Replace Them - EricTheCarGuy

09:53
Well here you are after many requests for this one it's finally here. I shot this last spring but I've been saving it for you as a special present. In this episode we go over the principals of operation and replacement of a basic front disc brake set up. It all starts with a shaking steering wheel and ends with new brakes. I think this is a pretty good video overall and gives the important information you would need to perform this task yourself. A couple of notes. I didn't have time to go over how to isolate a brake pulsation between front or rear in this video. Also, I had a very easy time of getting these rotors off, I can assure you that this is not often the case, I could probably do a video just on removing difficult rotors alone. I may do a video on that in the future as I collect some different scenarios for you. --- Click below and Stay Dirty Visit me at EricTheCarGuy.com http://ericthecarguy.com/ Visit EricTheCarGuy Forum http://www.ericthecarguy.com/forum/default.aspx Visit my Facebook Page: http://www.facebook.com/EricTheCarGuy --- The Blog http://ericthecarguy.blogspot.com/ And you can always leave your questions and comments for me to answer here as a video or text response, I'm here for you after all. Check out Kalvinator Engines: http://www.kalvinatorengines.com If you're building a performance engine, degreeing the camshaft is a must. As shown in the video, you need to verify the grind of the cam. If you don't, and there's a problem with performance later, you have only yourself to blame. How to Set Ignition Timing, Acura Integra - EricTheCarGuy

How to Set Ignition Timing, Acura Integra - EricTheCarGuy This is kind of part 2 to the video I did on replacing a distributor on an Acura Integra. Whenever you replace a distributor on an engine like I did in that video you will also need to reset the ignition timing. I did my best to show you the operation in real time but the camera really didn't like the strobing light so I'm sorry I wasn't able to get you a better picture of that. The most important thing to remember with this is to read the procedure before you get started, if not you may perform it incorrectly and as a result set the timing incorrectly.
