Nearly two months ago, a stranded baby California sea otter was found alone with no mom in sight on a beach in Santa Barbara. She was estimated to be about a day old, possibly born premature. The pup was rescued by the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Sea Otter Rescue and Conservation (SORAC) Program and hand raised until she could be transported to SeaWorld San Diego for long-term care.
Some rescued otters can be successfully reared and returned to the wild, while others, like this pup, are deemed non-releasable for various reasons. Otters that remain in human care play a vital role at Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) accredited facilities, as ambassadors for their threatened wild counterparts.
Our animal care specialists report that the baby is healthy, active, learning to groom herself and steadily gaining weight. Her diet consists of a specialized marine mammal milk formula, and solid foods, including diced shrimp, clam and squid. She will remain at the nursery for the time being, but eventually will be introduced to our four other resident female California sea otters: Mocha, Coco, Sina and Clover, who range in age from 2 to 4 years old and are also rescued and rehabilitated through SORAC. The pup does not yet have a name.
In addition to taking in animals in need from other facilities, SeaWorld rescues between 150 and 200 marine mammals from local beaches every year, with the goal of rehabilitation and return to the ocean.
