A Virtual Component in SOLIDWORKS is a component that doesn't have its own file; typically a part that is created and saved within an assembly. In this video, TriMech Application Engineer, Patricia Bar, explains what a Virtual Component is, demonstrates how to create a new Virtual Component, how to take something that is not a virtual component and convert to one, and finally, how to save a virtual component as an external file. A virtual part is basically a normal part only instead of being saved as an individual file that requires management; it is instead saved as a part of the assembly file. What’s great about a virtual part is that you don’t have to deal with having multiple files. It’s also handy for quickly modeling up a rough concept when in early stages in the design process. While a part is virtual you can rename it, delete it, and when the time is right, save it out as a part file. Make use of Virtual Components, and it will help you streamline your design process. The Delete Face command in SOLIDWORKS is a great way to remove geometry in any sort of scenario where you need to actually remove a series of faces, whether it be a hole or a fillet, on geometry that you don't want to have to edit an entire feature history tree for. In this video, we will take a look at an imported 3D solid which has no file feature history and it's one imported feature. This video begins with Application Engineer, John Hall, revealing how to add the Delete Face command to the toolbar. Afterwards, you'll see how easy it is when John demonstrates how to best remove small fillet surfaces from your assembly. He will also cover and explain the options associated with this function. There are two ways to create a miter flange in SOLIDWORKS – the easy way and the real easy way. In this video, TriMech Application Engineer Dave Bazinet, demonstrates the best approach to efficiently create miter flanges. Starting with a simple box, Dave utilizes the Edge Flange command to create 4 flanges in a matter of seconds. Also, in case you’re wondering what happens when you change the angle from 90 degrees to 60 degrees – SOLIDWORKS follows suit with the angle change and applies the new angle to all the flanges. The Edge Flange command is an elegant and effective way to get the job done quickly. SOLIDWORKS’ Simplify Utility add-in creates simplified configurations of a part or assembly in preparation for analysis, or for having simplified configurations within a large assembly. Found in the SOLIDWORKS Utility Add-in, the Simplify Utility determines an internal calculation of "insignificant volume" based on the size of a part or assembly. Supported features below the insignificant volume can be suppressed to a derived configuration so you can perform analysis on the simplified part or assembly.
