Interior Design – Small Space Makeover: A Sophisticated Family Home
Designer Maia Roffey proves sophisticated and family-friendly aren't mutually exclusive in this must-see small space makeover. See how she transformed a dated split-level home into a functional, playful and adult-approved space for a young family. Starting with the living room, Maia focused on bringing in natural light. She chose lighter walls and gold-toned floors to bounce in warmth. The homeowner's love for blue and green offers a soothing colour scheme throughout, while multiple built-ins provide stylish and easily accessible storage space. Maia removed the dividing wall between the kitchen and dining room to open up the space and allow natural light to enter. Fluid pieces like armless chairs and a round table keep the circulation flowing. A window seat with storage below replaces a large window in the kitchen for increased privacy. Interior Design – A Small Rustic City Cabin
Homeowners Brett van Sickle and Garnet Suidy convert an unusable storage space into a place they can call home. See how they designed a small cabin in the city on a tight budget using vintage and reclaimed finds. Starting from scratch, Brett and Garnet did everything themselves, from plumbing and electrical to flooring and installing flagstones in the garden. The design is heavily dictated by the layout of the space, which consists of a loft with a cozy sleeping area and lots of nooks and crannies, making it easy to add built-ins for storage. For under $20,000, they’ve done a great job at creating a beautiful place to call home.

Interior Design - Classic Bistro-Style Kitchen Packed With Storage
Architect Gillian Green gave this small, dated kitchen an update in both form and function thanks to bistro-style finishes, smart storage options and a 250-square-foot addition. While the home was well-proportioned, the kitchen was particularly small. By expanding the kitchen into the homeowners' backyard, Gillian Green was able to give her clients the space they needed. A black and white colour palette brings cohesiveness to the newly opened space and creates a classic bistro-style feel. The white subway tile backsplash and black-and-white mosaic floor tiles, inspired by European bakeries, complement the aesthetic. Gillian added storage with a large kitchen island, along with an array of cabinets and drawers. Floor-to-ceiling metal glass doors overlook the backyard, and an oval Saarinen table complete with a curved banquette and bentwood x-back chairs provide the perfect dining space.

Interior Design – Genius Dorm Room Decorating Ideas
Time for a challenge! H&H’s Joel Bray and Reiko Caron bring high style to a tiny, sterile space – a university dorm room at Ryerson University in Toronto. Learn how to fully transform a dull room into a stylish, young adult living space by adding personality with fabrics and accessories. Oh, and Joel builds a headboard in under 10 minutes. No big deal. The space came with a number of restrictions, like bossy carpeting and a dull blue color palette, so Joel and Reiko had to work with the room’s decor instead of against it. After repositioning the furniture and removing a lot of the pieces, like burgundy curtains, a side table, a task lamp, chair, and “prison bedding,” an extension rod was added to display layered sheer and dark drapes. The same drapes are used to hide the closet, but on shower curtain rods since they’re adjustable. Joel created a headboard with cardboard, foam and pretty patterned fabric for the bed, which was styled with throw pillows and a sequined duvet. A classic table lamp brings light to the bedside and desk, while an inexpensive large framed map – which was DIY’d – adds the final pop of pretty, helping to transform the 100-square-foot room into a stylish, young adult living space.

Inside AD100 Designer Jamie Drake's New Apartment in NYC | Celebrity Homes | Architectural Digest
The AD100 designer Jamie Drake on decorating his vibrant New York City apartment. Style is all about evolution. Certainly, AD100 designer Jamie Drake can attest to that. Just think: His first project to land in the pages of Architectural Digest back in 2003 was a study in what Drake calls “complete traditionalism”—the restoration of New York’s 1799 Gracie Mansion for Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg. Now, of course, Drake’s well-known name conjures all varieties of vivid purple and swirling, psychedelic art. But that, too, may not always be the case. Drake's legendary firm, Drake Design Associates, and rising-star studio Caleb Anderson Design have just announced they are joining forces to form Drake + Anderson. The New York–based designer Caleb Anderson was his number-one choice. “Caleb embodies all of the attributes that one needs to run a firm,” Drake says, listing off his myriad qualifications. “And he’s charming!” The icing on the cake. Of course, it didn’t hurt that the Texas-born Anderson got his break into the design world with an internship at Drake Design Associates in 2008. “It’s funny to think back about walking into that office on the first day,” Anderson says. “It really feels like things have come full circle, and I’m beyond humbled.” What will the partnership look like? By both accounts, the designers will tone down the use of vivid color (though it will certainly not disappear altogether), dial up the antiques, and throw in a dash of the avant-garde. “It’s continued eclecticism with a cleaner and fresher approach,” Drake says. The new firm’s first projects will include a London townhouse, a glamorous revamp of a Park Avenue duplex, and a clean-slate update of a prewar apartment on the Upper East Side. So just sit tight and you can soon see for yourself. In the bedroom of a small New York apartment—Anderson’s first solo project—Tom Dixon’s S chair provides a contemporary counterpoint to the client’s antique marble-top bureau. A girandole lamp from David Duncan Antiques shimmers against rich blue walls. In the dining area of a midtown Manhattan apartment, Anderson designed a brass table and surrounded it with the client’s velvet-covered antique chairs. Eglomise mirrors reflect a large antique crystal chandelier that the decorator purchased in Italy. In the living room of this SoHo apartment, a faceted brass John Lyle cocktail table and spinal Cervo chair add a dash of contemporary style to the otherwise rather traditional space. Anderson’s custom-built steel canopy bed, which featured a cantilevered desk as a footboard, was the talk of 2014’s Lenox Hill Hospital Designer Showhouse of New York. It weighed more than 800 pounds, although in situ it looked as light as air. “I had no idea it would be that heavy,” Anderson says. “The bed took six guys to move and had to be remade twice." Anderson’s scheme for New York’s 2014 Holiday House juxtaposed a Charles Rennie Mackintosh Hill House chair with a Louis XV–style desk from Newel. Interior Design – How To Live Large In A Small Condo
Discover designer Melissa Davis’s brilliant small space decorating secrets! When Melissa downsized to a condo for her and her son, she didn’t go the typical small space decorating route. Instead, she relied on large furniture to anchor the space and an open-concept floor plan to create great flow. A large dining table that seats 10 has additional seating that doubles as storage. A big sofa centers the living room, while collected art decorates the space throughout. Both bedrooms are kept simple, leaving space to evolve over time. How to Make Your Home Look More Expensive - More Splash than Cash
Would you like to make your home look more expensive without breaking the bank? I have 5 tips for getting that luxury look for less. I call it more splash then cash. #1 on my list is Crown Molding. A space that lacks crown molding tends to look average. Especially in rooms that are boxy or don’t have much architectural detail. For very little money crown molding provides richness to the space. When picking the molding select a wide trim for more impact. In this case the wider the trim the more expensive the room can look. #2 Throw Pillows are always a fabulous accessory for your couch, loveseat or chair. I say pile on the pillows. One pair on a couch looks skimpy - use two pairs, in contrasting patterns, colors, and textures. Also ignore using a bunch of small 12-18 inch pillows. Opt instead for larger 22 inch pillow cover and stuff them with 24 inch down blend insert. The bigger pillows will have a bigger impact. #3 Upgrading hardware finishes in the kitchen and bathrooms. Most tract homes come with very standard generic hardware. Builders use these bulk items because they are more cost effective, but not always the best for a homeowner that wants a more custom look. Hardware is not that expensive to replace. You can find more unique options at a hardware store, specialty shop or a flea market. #4 I have to say lighting is an area that many people over look. Lighting is another one of those builder’s standard accessories that typically lack character and style. Toss out nondescript chandeliers, pendant lights, bathroom lights and ceiling fans with a more unique designer look. Try scouting second hand stores, flea markets or Craigs list. #5 Nothing says luxury like fresh flowers and plants. The beauty of flowers and plants is that they look wonderful everywhere. I know, I know not everyone can have fresh flowers all the time or maintain green plants. If you have fake flower arrangements and plants make sure they are current. If your faux plants are more than 5 years old they need to be retired. After five years they are dusty, faded and the style of the arrangement is dated. Follow these tips and you can take your home from ordinary to extraordinary and you will see that luxury is in the details! My Links! Interior Design – Smart Small Space Decorating Ideas

Get her decorating tips for creating a cohesive look from one room to another, adding unexpected pops of colour and designing practical built-in storage. In this video you'll see before and after shots of her home renovation. In the entryway, Alexandra used bold blue paint to add interest to the space, and applied the same blue paint to the living room ceiling for drama. Using a vintage mid-century modern teak chest in the living room provides ample storage. The warm wood tones continue in the kitchen where teak-look cabinets and wood-panelled walls around the dining area create a sense of luxury. Alexandra created a restaurant-like dining nook with a velvet-upholstered kitchen banquette that doubles as storage. Over in the small principal bedroom, neutral-toned grasscloth wallpaper with a hint of gold creates a cosy vibe. Re-arranging the bathroom layout made the space practical, and it now features porcelain wall tiles and herringbone marble floor tiles.

Jessica kept the client’s two children in mind, so was careful to choose durable pieces that could take some wear-and-tear. Elegant accents, like glass chandeliers and panel moulding in the master bedroom, add a high-end aesthetic that’s still suitable for a young family. An Art Deco inspired dining table sits in the dining room among pinstripe wallpaper, adding even more glam to the tasteful space.

Interior Design – How To Decorate A Rental Apartment
We catch up with designer Jennifer Ferreira, whose Toronto home was featured in our second-ever online episode in 2009, to see how she updated her timeless rental apartment with new modern decor. Sticking to a black and white palette throughout, Jennifer focuses on furnishing with classic modern pieces that feature a timeless essence. The living room is styled around the fireplace where a giant gold accent mirror is displayed. The dining area takes on a minimal approach, focusing on architectural details with modern light fixtures and a bold zebra rug. A marble island and refaced cabinets update the kitchen, while abstract black and white wallpaper keeps things interesting in the bathroom.
