The first time I sailed across the North Sea. #7
Crossing the North Sea between Marstrand (Sweden) and Orkney (Scotland): Check! Ryan and I had no offshore sailing experience. Now, I do! Last week, I crossed the North Sea with Andy and Mia from 59 North Sailing on Isbjörn... and without Ryan :) Andy and Mia offer crew space on their boat, Isbjörn, a beautiful Swan 48. A couple of months ago, they happened to have an open bunk between Marstrand and Orkney, and I took the opportunity to get some offshore sailing experience before our own adventure. Btw, check them out!!!: https://www.59-north.com/ We all met in Marstrand, on the West Coast of Sweden. On the first day, I woke up way too early, and had to sneak out to the galley to get myself a snack while everyone onboard was asleep. I was even too early for the shower! We then set sail in waves that made Ben really seasick. I made a little fun of Ben while he was passed out in the cockpit, and paid the price. Just a moment later, I was myself agonizing all the way to Denmark, where we ended up that day. We waited out some weather, hit the reset button and set sails to Orkney on day 3. I used some seasickness patches and made sure I was well prepared for all conditions. Fortunately, the rest of the passage went much easier, but the 3 first days were exhausting. We spent them alternating between being on watch and sleeping, and I got to see some of the prettiest sunrises and sunsets of my life. I took my first night-watch ever, from 00.00AM to 4AM. We rocked 8 knots all the way in the dark. I was a bit scared at first, but being so prepared, geared up and in good company made me relaxed and enjoy the experience. After 3 days at sea, we took a dip in a 9 degrees cold North Sea. Bucket list check! That same day, we saw dolphins. The winds shifted to the aft of the boat on the next day, and I walked up the bow to go rig a boom preventer in the waves. I got back to the cockpit a little wet :) At 2.30 AM that night, I got woken up by the sound of the engine, and we landfall in Orkney at 4AM. Arved Fuchs and his team on their most recent expedition across the North Atlantic begins on the 80-year-old sailing ship "Dagmar Aaen", from Greenland's west coast, via Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Ireland and Scotland to the North German coast. It is a journey full of unforgettable experiences: unspoilt nature, rugged coasts, remote islands and extraordinary people who live with and off of the sea. For more than 30 years, German Arved Fuchs has undertaken ships expeditions to the most remote regions of our planet. He is mostly attracted to ice. There, on the west coast of Greenland, the cutter Dagmar Aaen, spent seven long winter months. This is where the five part series begins, which will come to an end after 12.000 nautical miles (ca. 22.000 kilometres) and more than four months later in the native North Sea.

Fab hi speed Dehler 34 trash across the North Sea
After flying into Midden Zeeland on a Cessna no less than 50 years old, just behind a bunch of thunderstorms, the weather forecast is such that instead of a relaxed sail back, in order to avoid bad weather on Tuesday and Wednesday, I foolishly decide to do the whole trip non stop, with a stiff breeze right on the nose, and singlehanded which was tiring to say the least. But this great little boat was pulling on the lead, rearing to go, and with the smallest jib and one reef in the main, she averages 6 knots over a day and a night. Everything worked well, the "maiden voyage" was enjoyable and memorable, and all in time for the MYC regatta 2015. Jul 15.

Boat trade across the North Sea
Foredrag om båthandel over Nordsjøen på St. Magnus Conference, Lerwick, Shetland 10. april 2014. A 20 minute presentation on the subject boat trade across the North Sea For several centuries small boats were traded from Western Norway to the Isles of Shetland and Orkneys. Even today boat terminology strongly shows the connection this boat trade held up across the North Sea. The boats were clinker built and were built both for rowing and sailing. With these boats people on the west side of the North Sea were able to maintain fisheries in rough seas outside the isles. Annually ships were sent across the Ocean to buy boats and accessories from Norway. The boat trade must therefore have been an important trade for several participants on both side of the ocean. But this trade also raises a lot of questions on how details in this trade happened: What kind of boats and who built them? How many boats were built and how were they ordered in a time when communications were based on favorable winds? What role did entrepreneurs on both side of the ocean play and who were involved in this trade? And least but not last: how did they transport these fragile boats across the weather exposed North Sea?

3] Going up the mast, Lowestoft Marina and a sail across the North Sea! | Sailing Mutiny
We made it safely to Lowestoft after a very long, rough journey from Grimsby! We were all very pleased to arrive at 2am and we quickly crashed out into our beds! The next morning we sorted out the main halyard which had become wrapped around the radar reflector and then lost up the mast when we tried to free it...note to self...always attach a rope to something that goes up (a weight is not enough!!) or it probably won't come down! I was chuffed though as I'd been dying to go up the mast!! :-D During our stay in Lowestoft we went exploring and ended up in Oulton Broad where we were lucky enough to catch a speed boat race on the lake! Scrappy enjoyed a good run in the park to burn off some energy and a good roll too in the grass! After a short stay and some fish, chips and ice cream for tea we headed out across the North Sea towards The Netherlands and had a much better sail. The second half was a bit rolly but we made it after 20 hours into Ijmuiden Marina. Now the adventure really begins...we have made it to our first country abroad! Join us next week where we enter the canal system, explore Amsterdam and spend our very first night at anchor! ____________________________________________________________________ Read our Sailing Travel Journal entries here: Lowestoft: https://www.sailingmutiny.com/royal-norfolk-suffolk-yacht-club-lowestoft/ IJmuiden: https://www.sailingmutiny.com/seaport-marina-ijmuiden/ ____________________________________________________________________ Subscribe to our channel so you don't miss the next episode!: https://www.youtube.com/SailingMutiny ____________________________________________________________________ Find us on Social Media Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sailingmutiny Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sailingmutiny/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/sailingmutiny Website: www.sailingmutiny.com ____________________________________________________________________ We're on Patreon!
