Which country does the most good for the world? | Simon Anholt

17:55
It's an unexpected side effect of globalization: problems that once would have stayed local—say, a bank lending out too much money—now have consequences worldwide. But still, countries operate independently, as if alone on the planet. Policy advisor Simon Anholt has dreamed up an unusual scale to get governments thinking outwardly: The Good Country Index. In a riveting and funny talk, he answers the question, "Which country does the most good?" The answer may surprise you (especially if you live in the US or China). TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). David Reibstein, Wharton: The Branding of Nations

Widely-held beliefs about a nation, accurate or not, can have tremendous bearing on a country’s industries and economy. In his talk, David Reibstein, Professor of Marketing at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School describes the power of national perceptions forming a nation’s brand. Just as a brand offers economic value to a firm, a nation’s brand is a significant factor that influences tourism, foreign trade, foreign direct investment, and ultimately GDP. He will share his data collected on over 21,000 respondents forming nation brands.
Ep. 4: Libertarians and the Poor (with Matt Zwolinski)

59:46
Aaron Powell and Trevor Burrus look at the plight of poor people and how concern for the least well-off relates to libertarian thinking. Libertarians are often branded as being anti-poor and are frequently criticized for espousing a philosophy that only benefits the rich and privileged. But is that true? They are joined by Matt Zwolinski, who teaches philosophy at the University of San Diego, founded the Bleeding Heart Libertarians blog, and writes for Libertarianism.org. Featuring David Saranga (Former Consul for Media and Public Affairs at the Israeli Consulate in New York) and Noam Sheizaf (Journalist, Blogger and Co-Editor of +972 Magazine) Moderated by Natan Edelsburg ----- Do you perceive Israel as a country of social liberalism, technological and scientific advancement and beaches full of sexy men and women or do you see Israel as a country of eroding democracy, militarism and human rights abuse? Hear from two people who play a pivotal role in shaping what we hear and see from Israel in the West. Find out how new media (Twitter, Facebook, blogs and more) are being used to amplify messages and images about Israel and cover controversial topics. Do these tools help or hurt Israel's image? Public Lecture Video (11.11. 2013) Nancy Snow - Japan: The Super Nation Brand

01:25:47
Japan is the world's third largest economy and a super nation brand. It is known best for its cuisine, hospitality, safety, popular and traditional culture and its resilience after 3/11. Public diplomacy, otherwise known as nation branding, has never been more important in post-3/11 Japan. Japan is playing a game of catch up with its recent announcement of the Japan Brand Fund "to fund and support business activities to cultivate overseas demand for Japan's attractive products and services that make full use of the unique characteristics of Japan's culture and lifestyle." Most every nation now has a public diplomacy entity to promote its unique qualities so even Cool Japan and J-Pop have a lot of global competition. The winning bid for the 2020 Summer Olympics should put everyone on notice that nation branding is a concern for every Japanese citizen, not just government ministries or businesses pushing their products and services overseas. So how does Japan manage its national image going forward? Nancy Snow will lead an interactive discussion on Japan's nation brand in the aftermath of 3/11 from Operation Tomodachi to No Nukes.

He reminds us that all immigrants, past and present, have the same reasons for coming to our country. We don't have a privacy problem | Cullen Hoback | TEDxJacksonville

12:29
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Every search we make, everywhere we walk with a cell phone in our pockets, every photo we take gets added to our “digital self”–a person who is fragmented across different servers around the world, and shared by different companies. But, as Hoback reminds us, this digital analogue of you is not owned by you–and any effort to regain digital privacy must begin with restoring your property right to your digital self. Cullen Hoback is an American filmmaker and digital rights advocate who has been touring the world with his most recent documentary TERMS AND CONDITIONS MAY APPLY. But after making an entire film about digital privacy, Hoback realized we’ve been getting the digital privacy debate all wrong. “When we talk about privacy online,” he argues, “we’re not talking about the right thing. You cannot have privacy unless you have ownership–not shared ownership, real ownership.” About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Send Bravo Child to TEDx China!?!

00:53
Short Summary I am Bravo Child; a Cognitonaut - explorer of ideas. I have been invited to speak at TEDx China! As a communication, experience, interaction and game designer, (not to mention a huge fan of the TED / TEDx platform), I'd love to leap at the opportunity and while they will arrange accommodation for me, air flights to China are not covered. I'm hoping that if I've ever shared ideas with you and that you see the value in me being given a stage to do so on an international scale, that you might help fund my plane ticket there? What I need, What you get: I need AUD$1438.10 to cover my return flight, if I exceed my goal I'd put any additional funds towards flying my son over with me, (Child ticket = additional $1115.10), as I believe the world is the best classroom and if I champion creativity in education I should apply it to my own family. Giving him a first-hand experience of China and exposing him to the ideas presented at TEDx would be invaluable in his development! What you get is the happy heart sherbet knowing you sent a Cognitonaut into the TEDx arena! Aswell as a brand new talk by Bravo Child to shuffle your mindspace, along with a free download of the e-book I'll be creating to share at TEDx. The Impact The topic of the event is 'Predicting the Future' for which I would present a talk on our current globalisation through urbanisation and digitisation and how play, flow and aesthetics can inform how we establish sustainable systems to live within. This is an exciting opportunity for me, both as a chance to represent the Australian Arts and Community Building scene, to increase my profile as a speaker on an international stage and also to share ideas of creative evolution with other educators, inventors, visionaries and leaders of various fields. Risks & Challenges - I HAVE UNDER 2 WEEKS TO RAISE THE FUNDS AS THE EVENT IS ON 28TH MARCH!!! - I have been presenting / hosting / thinking / communicating for years, but I would want to present an entirely new, bespoke presentation for this event, complete with a performance and video / imagery, so will be working flat-out to create this over the next 2 weeks. - The accommodation provided us only for 2 night, but I would like to stay at least 5 nights, to meet other thinkers in China and build possible future collaborations, so will be working on the ground to make new contacts and arrange free accommodation once I am there. Other Ways You Can Help Any amount will help! If 50 people gave $30 my flight would be covered! ... or 30 people gave $50 that would work too ;) If you believe in this push to get me to China but can't afford anything right now, please share this with people who also love ideas and unlearning society to build a better world through play, so they may be able to donate to the goal?

Moving from minimum to life | Maddy Baker and Will Turner | TEDxWooster

09:56
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Maddy Baker and Will Turner unearth a major issue surrounding wages in the US. Through facts and research they demonstrate what is possible with current wages and what needs to change in order for people to have a living wage. They aim to spark interest and ignite a passion for economic equality and promoting “living wage communities". Will Turner is a senior religious studies major from Yellow Springs, Ohio. His main concentration is on Hinduism, but he also has broader interest in race, politics, and class, especially after participating in the “Just Work” class in its first year. Maddy Baker is a junior political science major and education minor from Washington, D.C. Her dream is to be an elementary school teacher that incorporates leadership opportunities into general curriculum so the students will grow up with a true love of service. This is an audio version of the Wikipedia Article: Germany Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago. Learning by listening is a great way to: - increases imagination and understanding - improves your listening skills - improves your own spoken accent - learn while on the move - reduce eye strain Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone. This video uses Google TTS en-US-Standard-D voice. SUMMARY ======= Germany (German: Deutschland German pronunciation: [ˈdɔʏtʃlant]), officially the Federal Republic of Germany (German: Bundesrepublik Deutschland, listen ), is a country in Central and Western Europe, lying between the Baltic and North seas to the north, and the Alps to the south. It borders Denmark to the north, Poland and the Czech Republic to the east, Austria and Switzerland to the south, and France, Luxembourg, Belgium and the Netherlands to the west. Germany includes 16 constituent states, covers an area of 357,386 square kilometres (137,988 sq mi), and has a largely temperate seasonal climate. With nearly 83 million inhabitants, it is the second most populous state of Europe after Russia, the most populous state lying entirely in Europe, as well as the most populous member state of the European Union. Germany's capital and largest metropolis is Berlin, while its largest conurbation is the Ruhr, with its main centres of Dortmund and Essen. The country's other major cities are Hamburg, Munich, Cologne, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Düsseldorf, Leipzig, Bremen, Dresden, Hannover, and Nuremberg. Various Germanic tribes have inhabited the northern parts of modern Germany since classical antiquity. A region named Germania was documented before 100 AD. During the Migration Period, the Germanic tribes expanded southward. Beginning in the 10th century, German territories formed a central part of the Holy Roman Empire. During the 16th century, northern German regions became the centre of the Protestant Reformation. After the collapse of the Holy Roman Empire, the German Confederation was formed in 1815. The German revolutions of 1848–49 resulted in the Frankfurt Parliament establishing major democratic rights. In 1871, Germany became a nation state when most of the German states (most notably excluding Switzerland and Austria) unified into the Prussian-dominated German Empire. After World War I and the revolution of 1918–19, the Empire was replaced by the parliamentary Weimar Republic. The Nazi seizure of power in 1933 led to the establishment of a dictatorship, World War II and the Holocaust. After the end of World War II in Europe and a period of Allied occupation, two German states were founded: West Germany, formed from the American, British, and French occupation zones, and East Germany, formed from the Soviet occupation zone. Following the Revolutions of 1989 that ended communist rule in Central and Eastern Europe, the country was reunified on 3 October 1990. Today, the sovereign state of Germany is a federal parliamentary republic with an elected president. In the 21st century, Germany is a great power with a strong economy; it has the world's fourth-largest economy by nominal GDP, and the fifth-largest by PPP. As a global leader in several industrial and technological sectors, it is both the world's third-largest exporter and importer of goods. A developed country with a very high standard of living, it upholds a social security and universal health care system, environmental protection, and a tuition-free university education. The Federal Republic of Germany was a founding member of the European Economic Community in 1957 and the European Union in 1993. It is part of the Schengen Area and became a co-founder of the Eurozone in 1999. Germany is a member of the United Nations, NATO, the G7, the G20, and the OECD. Known for its rich cultural history, Germany has been continuously the home of influential and successful artists, philosophers, musicians, sportspeople, entrepreneurs, scientists, engineers, and inventors.
