Learn about architecture and design with Doug Patt at the Architect's Academy. http://academy.howtoarchitect.com/ Hi, Im Doug Patt and this is How to design like an architect. I thought the best way to talk about design would be to create a dream home for someone, but first, lets talk about the design process. An architect, like any design professional draws on a wellspring of information. How we design is based to some extent on what we know. What we know can be based on the school we went to, the books weve read, the magazines we like to look at, where we grew up, our friends and relatives, the occupations weve held and in general, our life experiences. A professor named Edmund Bacon (actually the father of the actor Kevin Bacon) told me something once that I will never forget. He said, Its in the doing that the idea comes. That is, we must sit and work through something before we can find the best way to solve a problem. Solving a design problem is essentially taking what we know and putting it together with that particular challenge. When an architect sits down to problem solve they frequently sketch. Sketching is one of the best ways to work out the solution to a problem. And I believe that its exactly what Edmund Bacon meant when he said its in the doing that the idea comes. Before we design our dream home I need to give you a little insight into one of my favorite architects. Le Corbusier (October 6, 1887 August 27, 1965) was a Swiss born architect, writer and painter among other things. He was well known as a modern architect and for his theories & approach to architecture. Ill save his story for another episode, but would like to reference one of his most well known buildings. The Unite dHabitation in Marseilles France is a very modern looking, long, narrow building that incorporates a number of Corbusiers design principals. The building is set on large concrete pilotis or pillars. It also incorporates a roof garden and sculpture. Although the style is seen as brutalist, it was Corbusier and his teams intention to create more suitable living accommodations for people who lived in congested cities. They did this by stacking narrow two story apartments rather than spreading them out over the landscape. The buildings compact, lifted form was also seen as opening up the ground plane and providing the residents with a place of recreation on the roof. So, keep those things in mind as we look to design our dream home. This is Kelly. Kellys dream home is a house on a cliff overlooking the ocean in California. She loves modern architecture. Now for purposes of time constraints Im only going to design a small portion of the house and Im going to do it quickly. So, It goes without saying that any architect worth their salt should be using a lot more information & spend a lot more time problem solving than Im sharing with you here. Now, I assumed the site was narrow because of the scarcity of build able land in say Laguna Beach, CA. In that case I decided the home would be long and narrow, but tall. Every area has zoning ordinances that would probably affect the height of this building but Im going to ignore them for this exercise. The house will be essentially a four-story window that points directly at the ocean view. Kelly wants to be a counselor so we know there should be some kind of space dedicated to having discussions and being inspired. A cantilevered deck is perfect for this. Now, an architect gets all kinds of useful information when interviewing a client for a job. Kelly's favorite building material is stainless steel so I decided to clad the whole house with it. Kelly also told me she had been born on an Indian reservation so I added this conical shape to the roof. A reference to the traditional American Indian tee pee. And there you have it. I put what I know together with the challenge of creating a dream home. SOME of what I referenced was work by Le Corbusier. What weve ended up with is a four story building set on pilotis. A home with a roof garden and roof sculpture that doubles as an observation deck. And finally a long narrow building with stacked living accommodations and a breathtaking view. All put together, a dream home for Kelly. So remember. There's no one formula for design & this has simply been one way to get to a quick solution. Thanks for checking out how to design like an architect. Im Doug Patt. If you want me to design your dream home just subscribe to my youtube channel, then send me a message in the connect with section. If I get enough interest maybe Ill pick you & design your dream home in an upcoming episode!

I`m reuploading this video because I initially used copyright music by accident. I`m actually quite happy about it, the new song fits way better anyways. Building a bushcraft dugout/ underground shelter alone in the woods. The small hut built entirely from dead wood features a bed and a bench and is surrounded by a low stone wall. It`s been an drudgery shoveling away all the soil, clay and small stones and since I only had time on the weekends, it took me almost two months to finish the digging. I initially planned the shelter to only be about 2 by 1 metres, but later changend my mind to expand towards the back and build a kind of loft with a bed. For further information check the FAQ in the comments :) I really enjoyed building this shelter. It has been a great opportunity for me to escape from everyday life and the stress I had in school. Big Thank You to My Self Reliance, TA Outdoors and Joe Robinet for inspiring me to get outside and be creative! “I wanted to experience what they experienced, and I didn’t know any other way to do it except by trying to build a car like they had,” says Peter Giacobbi, builder and owner of this incredible 1959 Ferrari 250 TR recreation. That’s right: recreation. A master fabricator, engineer, and builder, Giacobbi made this car in order to understand what his boyhood heroes like Juan Manuel Fangio and Graham Hill experienced when driving cars like the Ferrari 250 TR. His favorite design on any car ever, the project swung into high gear after finding a handmade aluminum body for a ’59 TR that had been sitting for decades. From there, Giacobbi began to figure out what he needed in order to complete the car. “I made everything look as close as possible…I copied the chassis, found the correct tail lights, had the instruments made…” “There are some things that are different from the original. It was impossible to find a good 3 litre motor, so I used a 4.4 and modified the aesthetics to look like the 250…” he says. He says that the car is very exciting, especially considering that it weighs 2,300 lbs and has 400 horsepower. “These cars are very hard to drive…It’s pure seat of the pants,” Giacobbi says. “I drive it as much as I can, I drive it down to the local coffee shop usually once or twice a week,” he says. But on any road—headed to any destination—his respect for racing greats is apparent, saying, “They’re not only heroes, they’re supermen to have driven at the high speeds for the distances they did is an absolute miracle.” Drive Tastefully® http://Petrolicious.com http://facebook.com/Petrolicious

Follow us on the Web and Facebook http://buildingthelegend.co.uk http://www.facebook.com/BuildingTheLegend/ Content copyright of Channel 4 who say the following ..... "With exclusive access to Jaguar, classic car fanatic Mark Evans follows the creation of what is arguably the world’s most exclusive car. Inside jaguar's factory, craftsmen are building a car fit for a billionaire and the most expensive the company has ever made. Evans witnesses the extraordinary lengths to which they’re going to manufacture a vehicle with a price tag of more than £1 million. Known as the Lightweight, it is an exact recreation of the racing version of the iconic Jaguar E-Type and six super-rich individuals have been specially chosen to own one. Only 12 Lightweights were ever made, back in 1963, one of which recently sold for an estimated £5 million. But 18 were originally planned and now the remaining six are being recreated by Jaguar from scratch. But in the traditional world of classic cars, not everyone welcomes change. And as he goes in search of the secret buyers, Mark discovers this modern ‘classic’ car has divided opinion. With access to both owners and dealers of Lightweights, this film explores the love of classic cars and what drives men to shell out millions for them. Back at Jaguar, as the Lightweight project gets closer to the deadline and the first delivery, the pressure starts to tell. Can Jaguar create automotive perfection, please their billionaire clients and silence the critics?"

We continue to build a bushcraft viking house using hand tools only. Part 6 focuses on building the bark roof for the viking house. The hand tools we use in for this project is a viking axe, hammer, auger, saw, drawknife and a few others. We use bark from cedar logs for the shingles for the roof of the house. We tile the bark and use tacks and nails to secure it to the rafters and timber frame. We had to use a wood ladder to get up onto the roof of the house. Once we were finished building the bark roof, we focused on digging a tunnel to the viking long pit to help with air flow inside the camp and reduce the smoke. We then cooked food over an open fire in the woods. We hung some deer hides and antlers above the viking long house to make it look more rustic. With the roof complete, the viking camp is now ready for camping overnight in! We are really looking forward to cooking meat over the fire pit. In Part 7 we will focus on finishing the viking camp. The gable end at the back and front of the viking house still need to be built. We will also add a folding window to this Log Cabin like structure. I dedicate this video to Amy Shira Teitel for her impressive work and awesome channel about the aerospace and American spacial program. I strongly advise you to go see her videos on her channel "Vintage Space" which are superbly explained and well realized. Thanks you Amy ;) It's been a while since I made a video on the Apollo / KSP subject, but I wanted to redo it, in a more complex and closer to reality way but also in a more cinematic and pleasant to watch video. By making this video I realized how difficult it is to represent each detail of the mission, while keeping the thing easy to watch and not too long. It took me about 3 days to do the video with a huge editing work, lots a scenes to shoot in game multiple times, the scenes to redo etc. ... There are a lot of details that are not perfect in this video, that's why I would like you to play a little game! Tell me in the comment section if you find errors or differences between my video and the real mission. I know there is a lot of space nerds here, We will see if you are good ;) By the way I want to point out that even if the Apollo 13 soundtrack is well known and used everywhere, is still damn cool. right? Also, all the radio conversations and audio events are not on the right time scale, for cinematographic purposes. By combining traditional archaeology with 3D technology, researchers at Lund University in Sweden have managed to reconstruct a house in Pompeii to its original state before the volcano eruption of Mount Vesuvius thousands of years ago. Unique video material has now been produced, showing their creation of a 3D model of an entire block of houses. After the catastrophic earthquake in Italy in 1980, the Pompeii city curator invited the international research community to help document the ruin city, before the state of the finds from the volcano eruption in AD 79 would deteriorate even further. The Swedish Pompeii Project was therefore started at the Swedish Institute in Rome in 2000. The researcher in charge of the rescue operation was Anne-Marie Leander Touati, at the time director of the institute in Rome, now Professor of Classical Archaeology and Ancient History at Lund University. Since 2010, the research has been managed by the Department of Archaeology and Ancient History in Lund. The project now also includes a new branch of advanced digital archaeology, with 3D models demonstrating the completed photo documentation. The city district was scanned during the field work in 2011–2012 and the first 3D models of the ruin city have now been completed. The models show what life was like for the people of Pompeii before the volcano eruption of Mount Vesuvius. The researchers have even managed to complete a detailed reconstruction of a large house, belonging to the wealthy man Caecilius Iucundus. “By combining new technology with more traditional methods, we can describe Pompeii in greater detail and more accurately than was previously possible”, says Nicoló Dell´Unto, digital archaeologist at Lund University. Among other things, the researchers have uncovered floor surfaces from AD 79, performed detailed studies of the building development through history, cleaned and documented three large wealthy estates, a tavern, a laundry, a bakery and several gardens. In one garden, they discovered that some of the taps to a stunning fountain were on at the time of eruption – the water was still gushing when the rain of ash and pumice fell over Pompeii. The researchers occasionally also found completely untouched layers. In a shop were three, amazingly enough, intact windows (made out of translucent crystalline gypsum) from Ancient Rome, stacked against each other. By studying the water and sewer systems they were able to interpret the social hierarchies at the time, and see how retailers and restaurants were dependent on large wealthy families for water, and how the conditions improved towards the end, before the eruption. An aqueduct was built in Pompeii, enabling residents to no longer having to rely on a few deep wells or the tanks of collected rainwater in large wealthy households. The work behind the 3D film and a discussion on the credibility of the reconstructions are presented in an article, published in SCIRES Italy. Istituto di Scienza e Tecnologie dell'Informazione and the Humanities Lab at Lund University have contributed to the development of the material and 3D work. ### Article: Reconstructing the Original Splendour of the House of Caecilius Iucundus. We built this small off grid log cabin using recycled pallet wood that we collected for free. The aim of the diy project was to try and save money by building a cabin in the forest on the cheap. Living off grid is something we have always admired, being able to forage and gather food from the land, much like the primitive hunter-gatherer did. This off the grid cabin, although small, is an ideal one-man bug out camp in a survival situation. Slowly, we are turning this off grid cabin in the forest into a wilderness homestead. So far, this tiny hobbit home has no electricity or solar power, but it does have a window, roof, front porch, folding table, raised bed, chair, bench, shelves, bookcase and a woodstove to keep the cabin warm during the cold winter months. To build the pallet wood cabin we have used a mixture of hand tools and power tools. We filmed and documented the building of this log cabin in a playlist on our channel called "The Off Grid Pallet Wood Cabin" which you can watch here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLxnadpeGdTxDMYqxhMnVMPHzgIuUOKB54 We started the cabin build by breaking the pallets down into useable pieces of timber. We then cleared a site in the forest to build the foundations of the cabin using larger pallets. The second stage of the build was the side walls, and then the roof, which we used a piece of recycled tin from an old barn. We then fitted a small window from a garden shed, and started to work on building the front porch. Once the main structure of the cabin was complete, we focused on making rustic pallet wood furniture for the inside of the small house. We bolted together a raised bed, and made a small chair and foldaway table to save space inside. We then needed to heat the cabin, for this we opted for the G Stove Heat View which has a stove pipe oven attachment so that we can bake food in it, plus a water container to boil water for fresh coffee and tea. In many of the episodes we cooked food in cast iron frying pans on the woodstove. In the warmer months we cooked on an open camp fire using a cast iron grill on a Bushcraft style tripod which we lashed together. We have cooked fresh fish, pie, bacon, eggs, soup and much more on the woodstove. Hopefully, we can use this former Bushcraft Camp as an area to practice developing our wilderness survival skills, learning primitive technology and how to forage for wild edibles and catch and cook our food. At the end of the day, this project was more about a father and son spending time in the outdoors working on free diy projects and learning how to become self reliant and save money for a happier lifestyle. We hope you enjoy the adventure! The Woodstove we use is the Gstove Heat View. We head back to the Off Grid Pallet Wood Cabin to continue building more pallet wood projects for the Wilderness Homestead. In this episode of the pallet wood cabin build, we dismantle the Bushcraft wall that we weaved with sticks, and in place we expand the diy pallet wood picket fence that we built in a previous episode. This now completes the area of the vegetable garden and raised vegetable bed and polytunnel. The front porch of the cabin already has a bench, but we decided to design and build another chair there, but this one with a more decorative look. We put this one together with screws for more stability. Then, using some hand tools, we started work on building a flower trough for the flowers at the front porch. These pots will hold flowers that we will plant in a couple of weeks as the long winter has made it difficult to plant vegetables and flowers. Now that spring is in full flow, we will begin to plant some veg in the polytunnel. There is also an abundance of wild edibles in the surrounding forest. After we had finished the building projects, we fired up the wood stove and cooked up some bacon and eggs and put these in some fresh bread for a sandwich. We then finished off the episode with Theory Time, with Dad talking about the negative effect that modern-day mobile phones are having on society and the damage it is causing.
