Richard Branson: Advice for Entrepreneurs
Don't miss new Big Think videos! Subscribe by clicking here: http://goo.gl/CPTsV5 Since Branson founded Virgin in 1970, the company has grown from a small record outlet to a global powerhouse. Can the brand continue its success without him? Question: What is your advice for entrepreneurs? Richard Branson:  I think the most important thing about running a company is to remember all the time what a company is.  A company is simply a group of people. And as a leader of people you have to be a great listener and you have to be a great motivator.  You have to be very good at praising and looking for the best in people.  People are no different from flowers.  If you water flowers they flourish, if you praise people they flourish. And that is a critical attribute of a leader. Question: What has been the most difficult part about running Virgin?Richard Branson:  There is a very thin dividing line between success and failure.  Most people who set off in business without financial backing they fail at some times in their lives. I've only just stayed at the right side of that dividing line.  For instance, just after...  You know we had a record company.  I was fed up flying on other people's airlines.  I felt that the experience of flying on other people's airlines was an unpleasant one and I decided to set up an airline.  Well our bank went into a complete panic attack and when I came back from doing the inaugural flight of Virgin Atlantic's very, very first flight from London to New York I came back to find the bank manager sitting on my doorstep and informing me that they were going to close Virgin down on the Monday and this was the Friday and that I had two days to effectively pay them off the monies that they'd loaned us and I remember pushing the bank manager out of my house, telling him he wasn't welcome, which is a dangerous thing to do to your bank manager and then spending the weekend ringing around the world to all of the distributors of our music asking if they could give us a temporary loan to get us through the following week, which they were good enough to do and by the end of the week we had changed banks and we actually managed to find a bank that was willing to lend us 30 times the overdraft facility that our bank had lent us and we managed to survive. And I think the moral of that story is actually don't think of your bank as somebody that you're beholden to.  I mean don't...  You know people just don't move from one bank to another.  Sometimes you need to be willing to step up and move your banks in the same way that you should step up and move your doctor on occasions and anyway, I learned from that lesson. Question: Can Virgin continue to be successful without you?Richard Branson: Virgin does work very well without me.  I mean I use myself to build the brand, to build the sort of three or four hundred companies around the world, but I also learned the art of delegation.  I have a fantastic team of people who run the Virgin companies, give them a lot of freedom to run the companies as if they were their own companies.  I give them the freedom to make mistakes and the Virgin brand is now maybe one of the top 20 brands in the world, well respected. And when my balloon bursts Virgin will continue to flourish. And maybe I add the icing on the cake on occasions, maybe they'll have to spend a bit more money on marketing, but fortunately Virgin is in a state where it can live on healthily without me. How to get your business featured in major press like TIME, Entrepreneur, Fortune, Inc. etc
Yo! Want to know how to get featured in major magazines?! ( Like Entrepreneur Magazine, Time Magazine, Fortune Magazine, Business Insider) Keep watching to find out how ! One of the best things you can do for your business is to get it featured in major press. Here's how I've gotten Rich20 featured in almost every big outlet in the world. I will also deconstruct some HUGE writing myths for you. Getting your business featured in a major magazine doesn't necessarily mean that you will "blow up"....at least not right away. It also doesn't mean that you will have people knocking on your door looking to hire you. But people will begin to recognize your name. This is an important step towards becoming a well know writer. I've been in Time Magazine, Huffington Post, Entrepreneur, Fortune, Inc. Business Insider, Fox News. There is a prestige that comes with getting published and having your name associated with theirs. This helps boost your credibility when someone comes across your content Links mentioned: Front Page Formula course: http://www.frontpageformula.com/course Email tool: http://www.emailhunter.co ******* Some of my columns: Entrepreneur: https://www.entrepreneur.com/author/daniel-dipiazza Inc.: http://www.inc.com/daniel-dipiazza/shark-tank-star-lori-greiners-5-major-rules-for-new-entrepreneurs.html TIME: http://motto.time.com/4295956/to-do-list-strategies/ ******* Get Free Updates From The Rich20Something Blog: http://www.rich20something.com =================================== Social Media Links: Daniel’s Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DanielDiPiazzaPage Daniel’s Instagram: http://instagram.com/Rich20Something Daniel’s Twitter: https://twitter.com/Rich20Something

Being and entrepreneur is an amazing career choice but there are definitely some things you need to be aware of before you get started. These 10 business lessons are ones that I learned and wanted to share with you. Aaron Marino of alpha m. says that if you told him 10 years ago that he would be successful by talking to a camera about how he shaves his testicles, he would have punched you in the face. Back then, he thought success was owning a chain of fitness centers. Success doesn't always look like you expect. Being an entrepreneur is not easy! But Alpha has learned valuable lessons along the way which he shares here. Valuable Business Lessons 1. Choose business partners wisely - do background checks. It's like a marriage and legally binding. 2. Control overhead expenses - you pay everyone else before you're paid. 3. Don't be afraid of hard work - the mountain is steep, and you have to climb it. 4. Take your pride and throw it out the window - you will have to do any and everything to be successful. Swallow your pride. 5. Know when it's time to move on - "Shoot the bleeding dog." 6. Look for opportunity everywhere - search out for markets that are unfulfilled 7. Hire smart and surround yourself with good people - not just qualified but people who you want to be associated with; those with good moral character and compasses 8. Be honest and ethical in everything you do 9. Success is not always what you expect it to or want it to 10. Do what you love and then it's not work!

Q&A with former Entrepreneur magazine Editor-in-Chief Amy Cosper
Kate Volman interviews Amy Cosper, former Editor-in-Chief of Entrepreneur magazine and current CEO of Radical Upstarts about entrepreneurship. Starting a new business? Get  a WordPress website up and running fast with GoDaddy’s WordPress Websites https://www.godaddy.com/websites/wordpress?cvosrc=video.youtube_organic.us_misc&cvo_creative=kSW8XL7ivOoisc=ytmisc. See the full blog post at https://www.godaddy.com/garage/smallbusiness/launch/qa-with-amy-cosper-ceo-of-radicalupstarts-video. Amy Cosper began her entrepreneurial journey in her own media consulting business, but her journalism background started in technology. In this video, Kate Volman chats with Amy about startup companies, what it takes to be an entrepreneur, the types of books you should be reading, and so much more. In a hurry? Check out our rundown of the words of wisdom you can’t miss from this video below: 0:56 Amy explains why she works at Entrepreneur magazine. 2:04 Amy talks about what she wants people to feel and walk away with when they receive their copy of the magazine. 2:39 Entrepreneurship is not just for small businesses. Surprised? You shouldn’t be! 3:14 Amy explains who she feels are some of the most entrepreneurial minded people she’s ever met. 3:37 Here’s what the word “entrepreneur” should not mean. 3:50 Amy Cosper talks about how politicians should be more entrepreneurial-minded. 4:40 Artists, freelancers and creatives of yesteryear may have struggled to create jobs from their talents, but these days they can turn those gifts into income. But, is the advice for creative entrepreneurs the same as it is for everyone else? 5:21 Spaghetti brains will not a business make. What the what? 6:23 Amy shares some of the best advice she ever received from venture capitalist Brad Feld. 8:18 As entrepreneurs it’s easy to get caught up in shiny object syndrome. Here Amy explains how you’ll be able to determine when new opportunities are worth pursuing vs. when they will take you off course from your main goals. 9:54 Amy and Kate spent a few moments talking about Starr Hall-Egan and her take on failure, and the juiciest takeaway from this part of the conversation starts right here. 11:18 Amy feels it’s unfair to state that there are certain qualities needed for an entrepreneur to be successful. However, she does share one thing that an entrepreneur MUST have to make it in business. 12:20 Entrepreneurship is not a destination, it’s a journey. 13:20 If you have a business idea, you don’t have to spend lots of money and time validating it. All you need is this. 14:45 Amy shares the two most frequently asked question people ask of her all the time. 16:59 There is a big mistake some businesses are making. Listen in here to see if you’re making it, too. 17:55 Do you do a lot of public speaking? You might want to check out this interesting piece of advice Amy gleaned from Barbara Corcoran. It might surprise you! 19:03 What’s Amy reading now and what does she love to read? Spoiler alert! She doesn’t read many business books. 20:06 Need a nonfiction book that isn’t business-oriented, but will school your brain with some culture? Here’s Amy’s recommendation. 20:46 The truth about reading all those business books revealed. 22:55 If you’re suffering from comparisonitis in business, this is for you. 24:37 Amy and Kate wrap up with where you can find Amy on social media. Bottom line ; Anyone can be an entrepreneur if they have fire in their belly. You need crystal-clear focus, and you need a boatload of passion. Read a lot, observe a lot and experiment until it clicks. Finally, don’t get too hung up on the destination, and avoid comparing yourself to others. What did you think? Did you like this video?
