Analytics: How Big Data Can Solve our Most Complex Problems

51:19
Data rates are growing some 40% each year, and the sheer amount of data has outstripped common analytics and staffing levels — creating a serious data analysis gap. To move forward, organizations must transform big data into smart data, which means being able to analyze data on a massive scale and quickly use it to provide deeper insights, create new products, and differentiate services. New data science is built on velocity (fast moving data), variety (different kinds of data), and volume (large amounts of data). This panel will explore what kinds of approaches and analytic tools are now being used and to what end. It will also examine the opportunities, risks, and likely developments the near future holds as analysis helps us transform the commodities of big data into valuable smart data. How PepsiCo's Big Data Strategy is Disrupting CPG Retail Analytics Like all consumer packaged goods (CPG) companies, PepsiCo relies on huge volumes of data to accurately replenish its retailers with the appropriate amount and type of product. Across the CPG industry, most analysts exclusively rely on Excel and Access for data wrangling, but as PepsiCo’s data surpassed the capabilities of those tools, they knew they needed a better way. By adopting Hortonworks, Trifacta, and Tableau, PepsiCo has been able to automate the bulk of their regular data preparation processes and improve the speed and accuracy of their reporting. In this webinar, supply chain leaders from PepsiCo will discuss: • Why adopting a Hadoop platform was critical for increased speed and agility • How next-gen data wrangling decreased PepsiCo’s analytic build time by 90% • How PepsiCo leverages data visualizations for million-dollar sales decisions This webinar is in partnership with Trifacta and Hortonworks.

Big Data Meets Cancer: Neil Hunt at TEDxBeaconStreet

18:05
Targeted drug therapies are showing promise in combatting cancer, but classical clinical trials are poorly suited to matching them to the thousands of variations of cancer caused by different DNA mutations. Big data techniques offer a way to analyze data pooled across many patients: their specific disease mutations, biological markers, the treatments, and outcomes -- in order to identify unexpected ways that existing therapies can be applied and combined to create personalized treatments that dramatically improve the chances of survival. Neil Hunt has spent the past decade as Chief Product Officer at Netflix, and among other things, developing big data techniques to crowdsource movie and TV recommendations using billions of viewing records from millions of customers. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Big Data will impact every part of your life | Charlie Stryker | TEDxFultonStreet

09:11
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. 2,500,000,000,000,000,000 bytes of data (2.5 exabytes) every day is what we currently generate. The mid-decade turning point we are now experiencing is an unprecedented ability to process these data, to generate insights. These insights, gleaned from new data processing techniques, can impact how we shop, how we find jobs, dating, and even how doctors diagnose illnesses. Dr. Charles W. Stryker is the Founder and President of a professional advisory firm, Venture Development Center, Inc. (VDC), and he has been recently recognized as the Data Innovator of the Year 2013. His business has a focused practice of assisting “Big Data” firms in creating, developing and commercializing Information Services properties. He has served on the board of a number of both public and private companies. His current board appointments include: Avention, Data Mentors, Datamyx, Geoscape, Innography, Jobvite, NetFactor, Netwise, RDC, The Retail Equation, Triton Technologies, and V12. Dr. Stryker has received the BS and MS degrees in Electrical Engineering and the Ph.D. in Computer Science from New York University. He has been an active speaker and author on the topic of database product development. In addition to these academic credentials, from 1991 to 1999 Dr. Stryker was a part time faculty member at the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School where he taught a number of courses in its Entrepreneurial Center. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience.

O'Reilly Webcast: An Introduction to Ethics of Big Data

01:03:22
Ethics of Big Data is about finding alignment between an organization's core values and their day-to-day actions in a way that balances risk and innovation. As Big Data brings business operations and practices deeper and more fully into individual lives, it is creating a forcing function that raises ethical questions about our values around concepts like identity, privacy, ownership, and reputation. How we understand those values and align them with our actions when innovating products and services using Big Data technologies benefits from a framework that provides a common vocabulary and encourages explicit discussion. The material will address the intersection of ethics and Big Data; what it is and what it isn't. Specifically, how to approach and generate dialog about an abstract subject with direct, real-world implications. A general framework for talking about ethics in the context of Big Data will be introduced. Aspects include: -Direct relevance to your data handling practices -How Big Data is influencing important concepts including identity, privacy, ownership, and reputation -Ethical Decision Points -Value Personas as a tool for encouraging discussion and generating agreement and alignment between values and actions -Balancing the benefits of Big Data innovation and the risks of harm The webcast will present key concepts from the forthcoming book Ethics of Big Data About Kord Davis: Kord Davis is a former Principal Consultant with Cap Gemini and has spent nearly 20 years providing business strategy, analysis, and technical consulting to over 100 organizations of all sizes including: Autotask, Microsoft, Intel, Sisters of Mercy Healthcare, Nike, Bonneville Power Administration (BPA), Northwest Energy Alliance (NEEA), Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Western Digital, Fluke, Merix, Roadway Express, and Gardenburger. Integrating a professional background in telecommunications and an academic background in philosophy, he brings passionate curiosity, the rigor of analysis, and a love of how technology can help us do the things we really want to do better, faster, and easier. A formally trained workgroup facilitator, he holds a BA in Philosophy from Reed College and professional certifications in communication, systems modeling, and enterprise transformation.
