History of the Baltic States
See the history of the Baltic States from the Crusader States, the great Empires and all the way to the precent day.
The Baltic coast
This episode presents the natural beauty of the shifting sand dunes of the Curonian Spit, the romantic beaches of the Latvian Baltic Sea and the island worlds of Estonia. Time and again, this deserted and almost untouched nature fascinates. In the winter, ringed seals give birth to their young on the pack ice. In the spring, Konik wild horse stallions fight fierce battles amongst themselves, while colourful European rollers fly through the dune forests. Lynxes wander through the coastal forests and in the orchid meadows turncoats and hoopoes find more than enough food. On the islands around Saaremaa in Estonia, grey seals hunt for fish. They share the archipelago with Europe’s largest tern, the Caspian tern.

Baltic Sea Cycle
In the summer of 2015, Jennifer Tough cycled from Copenhagen to Copenhagen, a complete 3800km circumnavigation of the Baltic Sea, solo and unsupported, in just 35 days. The trip started with freezing nights camping in deep forests of the Nordic countries, then transitioned to terrifying and at times goofy Russian traffic, then she explored the ex-Soviet Baltic nations, slept on stunning white-sand beaches in Poland, and finally pushed hard on exhausted legs through Germany and Denmark to arrive back in Copenhagen within hours of her designated cut-off time. Her film is her first attempt at filming her adventures, and was entirely self-shot and edited on a single GoPro. *The book from this adventure is now available! Estonia's president on security in the Baltic Sea region
Estonia is one of the Baltic states, a NATO and EU member, Estonia is a key player in Europe’s relationship with Russia and in developing a security policy that tackles this relationship. The Estonian experience with its neighbor to the east, perspectives on how to approach hybrid security threats, and views on how to articulate current security policy challenges, are of high importance and interest both to the Nordic countries and the rest of Europe. On October 16th, we have the pleasure of welcoming the president of Estonia Ms. Kersti Kaljulaid to address these issues and more in a public lecture at NUPI. Chair is Senior Research Fellow and Head of NUPI's Cyber Security Centre, Niels Nagelhus Schia.

Why are the Baltic states so rattled?
This week, soldiers from Germany and Belgium are settling into a new posting in Lithuania as part of the latest NATO troop deployment. Will their hosts—and the region—feel more secure as a result of their presence? Click here to subscribe to The Economist on YouTube: http://econ.trib.al/rWl91R7 NATO member countries Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are feeling threatened by Russia. Why are the Baltic states so rattled? Russia's been on the offensive; invading Ukraine and seizing Crimea in 2014. President Vladimir Putin and the Kremlin see NATO as a threat. One of NATO's founding principles is collective self-defence under the fifth article of the 1949 Washington treaty. Fears are intensifying that Moscow will test NATO in the Baltics. These small, flat, thinly populated countries are tricky to defend. Russia has a huge military capacity compared with the Baltic states. Why is Russia so interested in the Baltics? They were part of the Russian empire and Soviet Union. Both Estonia and Latvia have large Russian minority populations. In defence, Lithuania has restarted conscription and NATO is deploying more troops to the region but NATO's main backer could soon prove less supportive with a new president sending mixed messages about the alliance and declaring his admiration for Mr Putin. Leaders in the Baltic may have good reason to be worried. Daily Watch: mind-stretching short films every day of the working week. The Baltic forest and moorland
The wide, often untouched wilderness of the Baltic hinterland is home to many animals. More than 350 brown bears live in the primeval forests of Alutaguse. In the spring, the Soomaa National Park transforms into a huge lake. Europe's widest waterfall is located in Latvia. In the beginning of May, vimba bream follow the course of the River Venta. The hardly 50-centimetre-long fish have to overcome a 400-metre-long rock barrier in order to reach their spawning grounds. The Baltics are rich in superlatives: a fifth of the world's spotted eagle stocks breed here. One of the largest courtship arenas for snipes is located here in the floodplains of Latvia. More than 1000 wolves go on the hunt in Latvia's forests. Lithuania is the land of storks - with over 13.000 pairs, no other region in the Baltic States has more white storks.

The Baltic States: Forging Nations Amid Empires - Kevin Platt
2017 History Institute "What Is Eurasia? And Why Does It Matter?" Kevin Platt, Professor in the Humanities and of Russian and East European Studies, University of Pennsylvania presenting The Baltic States: Forging Nations Amid Empires When and why did the nations of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia emerge? How did these small peoples achieve self-government in a region long dominated by more numerous and more powerful groups? When the Soviet Union annexed their territory and tried to extinguish their cultural identity, how were they able to retain their sense of nationhood? In what way did this facilitate their emergence from the USSR in the late 1980s?
European Union Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region (EUSBSR); presentation /MPA Konfederacija/
The European Union Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region (EUSBSR) is the first Macro-regional Strategy in Europe. The Strategy was approved by the European Council in 2009 following a communication from the European Commission. The Strategy is divided into three objectives, which represent the three key challenges of the Strategy: saving the sea, connecting the region and increasing prosperity. Each objective relates to a wide range of policies and has an impact on the other objectives. WHY? The Strategy is an agreement between the Member States of the EU and the European Commission to strengthen cooperation between the countries bordering the Baltic Sea in order to meet the common challenges and to benefit from common opportunities facing the region. WHO? The EU member states involved in the EUSBSR are Sweden, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland. The EUSBSR implementation is coordinated in close contact with the European Commission and all relevant stakeholders, i.e. other member states, regional and local authorities, inter-governmental and non-governmental bodies. The Strategy is also welcoming cooperation with EU neighbouring countries (Russia, Iceland, Norway and Belarus). HOW? The EUSBSR is implemented in concrete joint projects and processes. Projects and processes named Flagships of the EUSBSR demonstrate especially well the progress of the Strategy. However, no new funding or institutions have been founded to support the implementation of the Strategy. Instead, the EUSBSR, as all Macro-regional Strategies, is based on effective and more coordinated use of existing funding sources, and the promotion of synergies and complementarities. Baltic States Travel
Baltic States Travel - The Baltic states are three countries of north-eastern Europe, on the Baltic Sea. The three small countries have big histories and diverse cultures. The region's 175,015 km2 are home to 6.3 million people, nearly half of them in Lithuania. The Baltic states have had vibrant histories. Christianity, Germans and feudalism arrived together in the 13th century. Also in the 13th century, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania emerged as a major political player in Medieval Europe. In the 16th century, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth took over control of the area. It lasted until the late 18th century. The area of the Baltic states was then largely absorbed into the Russian Empire, with a slice of modern-day Lithuania being given to Prussia. As part of revolutionary Russia's speedy exit from the World War I in 1918, the early Soviet government relinquished claim on the region, creating the states which exist today. Prussia was also considerably reduced after the war. The Soviet Union rebounded and re-annexed all three states during World War II in a move greatly resented by their populations. The Nazis used anti-Soviet sentiment to help them form Baltic divisions that assisted the Nazis in wiping out almost all of the area's Jewish population and others considered ethnic or ideological enemies (notably including Poles), though the Nazis' claims to being liberators were not widely believed for long. The Soviets yet again annexed the Baltics in 1944, in a move condemned as illegal in the West but tolerated as part of the emerging Cold War diplomacy. In 1990–91, the Baltic states led the breaking away of the USSR's constituent republics from the central government. They all turned away from Moscow and all joined both the European Union and NATO in 2004. Estonia and Latvia have already joined the Euro, and Lithuania is expected to do so in 2015. Kaliningrad, subject of ethnic cleansing and repopulated by Russians loyal to Moscow, became an exclave of Russia after the fall of the USSR. Enjoy Your Baltic States Travel!
