Crisis in Ukraine : Russia Extends its Control over the Black Sea and Strategic Waterways

10:03
Crisis in Ukraine: Russia Extends its Control over the Black Sea and Strategic Waterways On May 15, President Vladimir Putin took part in the opening ceremony of the Crimean Bridge – “a super 19-kilometre-long construction” linking Crimea to Russia’s Krasnodar region. This bridge is strategic and broader the economic and geopolitical implications in the region. The decision of Crimea to join the Russian Federation has strategic and geopolitical implications. The union of Crimea with Russia redefines both the geography as well as the geopolitical chessboard in the Black Sea basin. It constitutes a major setback for US-NATO, whose longstanding objective has been to integrate Ukraine into NATO with a view to undermining Russia, while extending Western military presence in the Black Sea basin. With the March 18, 2014 Treaty signed between Russia and Crimea, the Russian Federation will extend its control over the Black Sea as well over the Sea of Azov, the West coastline of which borders on Eastern Ukraine and the Donesk region. Under the agreement between Russia and Crimea announced by president Putin, two “constituent regions” of Crimea will join the Russian Federation: the “Republic of Crimea” and the “City of Sevastopol”. Both will have the status of “autonomous regions”. The status of Sevastopol as an autonomous entity separate from Crimea is related to the location of Russia’s Naval base in Sevastopol. Since the break-up of the Soviet Union, Russia retained its naval base in Sevastopol under a bilateral agreement with Ukraine. With the signing of the March 18th Treaty, that agreement is null and void. Sevastopol including the Russian naval base become part of an autonomous region within the Russian Federation. The naval base is no within Ukraine under a lease agreement. Moreover, Crimea’s territorial waters now belong to the Russian Federation. Russia now formally controls a much larger portion of the Black Sea, which includes the entire coastline of the Crimean peninsula. The Eastern part of Crimea –including the Kerch straits– are now under Russia’s jurisdiction control. On the Eastern side of the Kerch straits is Russia’s Krasnodar region and extending southwards are the port cities of Novorossiysk and Sochi. Novorossiysk is also strategic. It is Russia’s largest commercial port on the Black Sea, at the cross-roads of major oil and gas pipelines between the Black Sea and Caspian sea. Historically, the Kerch straits have played a strategic role. They constitute a gateway from the Black Sea to Russia’s major waterways including the Don and the Volga. During World War II, the Kerch peninsula occupied by Nazi Germany was an important point of transit by land and water. In the coldest months of Winter, it became an ice bridge linking Crimea to the Krasnodar region. The Kerch straits are about 5 kilometers in length and 4.5 km. wide at the narrowest point between the tip of Eastern Crimea and the peninsula of Taman. Kerch is a major commercial port linked to railway, ferry and river routes. the integration of Crimea into the Russian Federation means that Moscow is now in full control of the Kerch Straits linking the Black Sea to the Sea of Azov. The Ukrainian authorities are no longer in control of the port of Kerch. The bilateral agreement between Russia and Ukraine governing the maritime route through the Kerch straights has been scrapped. The straits constitute an entry point into Russia’s major river waterways. The Sea of Azov connects with the Don River and the Volga, through the Volga Don Canal. In turn, the Volga flows into the Caspian sea. The Kerch straits are strategic. The Kerch-Yenikalskiy Canal allows large vessels to transit from the Black sea to the Sea of Azov. the Kerch Straits link the Black Sea to the Volga which in turn connects to the Moscow river through the Volga-Moskva canal. Full control of the narrow Kerch straits by Russia ensures unimpeded maritime transit from the Black Sea to Russia’s capital as well as the maritime route to the Caspian Sea. The Russia-Ukraine 2013 agreement pertaining to the construction of the bridge had, for all purposes already been scrapped before March 16. Crimea’s union to Russia was already in the pipeline prior to the referendum, it was a fait accompli. Less than two weeks before the March 16 Referendum, at the height of the crisis in Ukraine, Russia’s Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev ordered the state-road building corporation “Russian Highways” “to create a subsidiary company that will oversee the building of a bridge across the Kerch Strait”. This bridge would largely be geared towards train transport routes linking Western and Eastern Europe to the Caspian Sea basin, Kazakhstan and China. subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9IFRHTtYJFjhI5fBrLIJiQ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DNA997

RUSSIA: CRIMEA: BLACK SEA FLEET

03:16
Russian/Nat Tensions between Russia and the Ukraine have flared again this week over the naval fleet in the Crimea. The Ukrainians have accused Moscow of removing and selling valuable technology from the Black Sea fleet which remained in Ukrainian territory after the collapse of the Soviet Union. That led to three years of bitter argument over the ownership of the fleet and its vessels. APTV has been to Sevastopol, home of the Black Sea fleet. The Crimean port of Sevastopol - a part of the Ukraine which continues to be predominantly Russian. In the last three years it's been at the centre of a growing row between the two countries. Following the break up of the Soviet Union, Ukraine claimed all former Soviet military hardware and forces on its territory, including the entire Black Sea fleet, based in Sevastopol. Russia insisted the fleet was of strategic importance and a bitter argument ensued. Three years later the two sides appear to have reached a compromise - the fleet will be divided between them. February 23 was "Defender of the Fatherland Day" a major military holiday in the former Soviet Union. For the Russian and Ukrainian sailors based in Sevastopol, it marks the end of an argument which almost led the two countries to war. Ukraine will now allow Russia to continue to base its fleet in Sevastopol and in return will get much-needed vessels for its infant navy. Many hope that this will be the end of the dispute. SOUNDBITE: (Russian) Translation: "If they don't create tension artificially then there won't be any. Both Ukrainian sailors and those from the Black Sea fleet understand that it is a problem for the politicians. We didn't create it and we can't resolve it. It will only be solved at government and state level. We resolve military problems. We know how to and that is our duty". SUPER CAPTION: Vice-Admiral Vladimir Bezkorovainy - Ukrainian navy. The Black Sea fleet is made up of 833 vessels and although no mention has been made yet of the number each side will get, Ukraine can only benefit from the deal. At present its navy boasts around forty patrol vessels and a handful of new, medium- sized ships to patrol the country's 600-mile (960 kilometre) coastline. This makes it practically impossible for them to undertake any missions beyond Ukraine's territorial waters. Its officers are all former members of the Black Sea fleet who took an oath of loyalty to Ukraine in 1991 but still remain on close terms with their Russian counterparts. SOUNDBITE: (Russian) Translation: "We have a situation here where they come to us and ask for things, bread, potatoes, and we go to them for things. We're friends, we're sailors". SUPER CAPTION: Lieutenant Danil Napriyenko - Ukrainian navy. But there are others who are glad the confusion has finally come to an end. SOUNDBITE: (Russian) Translation: "It's high time that we were divided. Experience has shown that it's been a problem for the Russian Black Sea fleet as well as for the Ukrainian fleet. The people were confused as to where they were living and whom they were serving". SUPER CAPTION: Commander Nikolai Zhibaryev - Ukrainian navy. The formal agreement is due to be signed next month by Presidents Yeltsin and Kuchma during a visit to Ukraine by the Russian leader. Many hope this will be a major step on the road to closer relations between the two countries. Russian fighter jets land in Crimea amid Ukraine tensions

07:47
Russian fighter jets land in Crimea amid Ukraine tensions - More than a dozen advanced Russian fighter jets have arrived at a base in the Ukrainian region of Crimea, which Moscow occupied and annexed in 2014. The Reuters news agency cited witnesses who saw the Su-27 and Su-30 fighters arriving at the Belbek air base on December 22. The move comes amid high tensions between Ukraine and Russia across the region, which were raised on November 25 when Russia seized three Ukrainian Navy vessels and their crews near the Kerch Strait, which connects the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said Ukraine was preparing a "provocation" in the area before the end of the year. Kyiv, for its part, has charged that Russia was building up military forces along the two countries' mutual border. President Petro Poroshenko has said Russia has moved "more than 80,000 troops, 1,400 artillery and multiple rocket launch systems, 900 tanks, 2,300 armored combat vehicles" and hundreds of aircraft to the area. Russia-Ukraine clash @ Crimea: NATO says Russian decision to seize Ukrainian ships unjustified

05:09
Ukraine has declared martial law, after Sunday's capture of three of its naval vessels and 23 crew members by Russia. After heated debates, lawmakers backed President Petro Poroshenko's request to bring in martial law that would last 30 days starting from 28 November. The authorities can now restrict public rallies and regulate the media. Some MPs fear Mr Poroshenko could suspend a presidential poll on 31 March 2019. Sunday's naval clash was off the coast of Crimea, annexed by Russia in 2014. Russian coastguard ships opened fire, before its special forces stormed the Ukrainian vessels. Between three and six Ukrainians were injured. Ukraine said it was a Russian "act of aggression". Moscow said the ships had illegally entered its waters. The naval clash is the first time Russia and Ukraine have come into open conflict in recent years, although Ukrainian forces have been fighting Russian-backed separatists and Russia volunteers in the east since 2014. Today NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stated that Russia's ongoing militarization of Crimea, the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov, poses further threats to Ukraine's independence. 01:26 Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Jens Stoltenberg says that there is no justification for the use of military force by Russia against Ukrainian boats near the Kerch Strait in the Black Sea on November 25. " There is no justification for the use of military force against Ukrainian ships and naval personnel. So we call on Russia to release immediately the Ukrainian sailors and ships it seized yesterday," he said at a press conference in Brussels after an extraordinary meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Commission in a comment on the attack and seizure of three Ukrainian vessels by the Russian special forces. In his words, the incident is a reminder that there is a war going on in Ukraine. "Russia's ongoing militarization of Crimea, the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov, poses further threats to Ukraine's independence. And undermines the stability of the broader region," he said. "So we call on Russia to ensure unhindered access to Ukrainian ports and allow freedom of navigation for Ukraine in the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait," he added. According to him, NATO Allies and Ukraine discussed the serious situation in the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait on Monday. Ukraine provided Allies with detailed information on the November 25 incident.

Ukraine Paragliding Take-Off near Yalta, The Crimea off the Black Sea

This is my paragliding take-off from the top of Ay-Petrinskaya Yayla mountain near the town of Yalta in The Crimea, Ukraine on Saturday, June 9, 2012. Video courtesy of Igor B. The elevation was about 1200 meters of 3,937 feet with distance to landing of a couple of miles. A few local Ukranian hang-gliding pilots were on hand to talk about the local flying conditions. One over-zealous pilot gave me an extra push for good luck. Winds were light on take-off, landing was smooth and simple in a local dried-up vineyard.

High Alert: Russia Warns U.S. to not provoke Ukraine in the Crimea

11:17
The joint exercises of the Ukrainian Navy and the United States Navy in the Black Sea is a provocation against Russia, First Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on Defense and Security Franz Klintsevich told RIA Novosti news agency. "This is a kind of political demonstration of US hegemonic aspirations: ‘we are everywhere, and everything concerns us,’" the senator said. At the same time, according, the American destroyer poses no threat to Russia. "It [the destroyer USS Carney], as they say, is constantly in the crosshairs and will be neutralized in case of any aggressive actions," Klintsevich added. The senator stressed that such actions do not improve Russian-American relations. "Perhaps, only Kyiv can consider itself a party that gained points as a result of this visit. I mean them receiving another American "approval" of their course, but this is only a tactical win, which will inevitably result in a strategic defeat," concluded Klintsevich.

EXCLUSIVE: The famous Russian documentary on Crimea with Putin FINALLY with SUBS

02:25:50
Special thanks to Rossiya 24 https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC_IEcnNeHc_bwd92Ber-lew for allowing us to post the documentary on our channel This is Andrey Kondrashov's documentary on the return of Crimea to Russia, aired in Russia on March 15, and now available with English subtitles. It has been a year since Crimeans took to the polls to vote for returning to their Motherland and leaving wretched Ukraine behind. The Western powers - led, as ever, by the US and UK - are determined to portray this momentous historic event as an imperial land-grab by Russia, and that it caused the subsequent civil war between Kiev and the breakaway provinces in the country's East. However, as this excellent documentary shows, the Russian government could see that the violent manner in which the elected Ukrainian leader Yanukovich had been ousted from power - with American fingerprints all over it - meant chaos would soon spread throughout Ukraine, and that the majority ethnic Russian population in Crimea would be among the worst hit by neo-Nazi militias terrorizing anyone whom they considered 'insufficiently loyal' to the US-selected regime. When President Yanukovich fled the capital on February 22nd 2014, President Putin set in motion a series of responses that would present the first real (and successful) challenge to American imperial hegemony. ‌In this must-watch documentary, you'll learn: how Russia saved President Yanukovich of Ukraine how Crimeans returning from revolution in Kiev tasted the the rage of the Right Sektor 'Maidan orcs' how members of the Berkut police force escaped to Crimea and helped set up people's militias to defend the peninsula, not least by preventing Kiev military jets from landing at Sevastopol's airport how these civilian militias defended against an organized takeover of the Crimean Parliament in Sevastopol that most Crimean Tatars sided with the ethnic Russian population, despite efforts by the coup organizers to generate an ethnic split between them how the militias came together to blockade repeated efforts by the 'Maidan orcs' (Right Sektor fascists) to enter the peninsula - by road, train and air how the Crimean Referendum was enacted following near unanimous support from the people's representatives in the Crimean Parliament how Berkut forces were joined by Kuban Cossacks from across the Black Sea region, including veterans of Russia's Afghan War, to defend Crimea from efforts by the new regime to send in weapons and explosives how, having prevented Kiev from deploying 'Maidan orcs' via air, rail and road, Russia's Black Sea Fleet blockaded the Ukrainian navy from leaving its home port how the Russian military placed the brand new Coastal Defence System 'Bastion-P' at locations along Crimea's southern coast. Once activated, the approaching USS Donald Cook Destroyer turned around at full-speed before Russian military jets chased the American warship south how the 'Night Wolves' biker gang joined in the defence of Crimea in Yalta by kidnapping Ukrainian General Mikhail Koval and uncovering weapons caches left by the Ukies prior to the coup how the Crimean citizen militias and Russian soldiers stationed in Sevastopol peacefully neutralized 20,000 Ukrainian forces stationed on the peninsula, many of whom then defected to Russia Join and subscribe by clicking on the 'bell' notification https://www.youtube.com/user/RussiaInsiderTV Support us on Patreon! https://www.patreon.com/TeamRussiaInsider Visit us! http://russia-insider.com/en Like us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/RussiaInsider?ref=aymt_homepage_panel Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/RussiaInsider

Russian forces opened fire on a group of Ukrainian ships in the Black Sea off the coast of the Crimean Peninsula near the Kerch Strait late on November 25, 2018, striking two warships and wounding 6 crew members before seizing the vessels along with a Ukrainian Navy tugboat. Ukrainian President has asked parliament to vote on Monday on whether to impose martial law on the country for 60 days, after his Military Cabinet recommended the move in a late-night meeting. Ukraine & Crimea - Biking and Diving the Black Sea on a KTM 990

Includes Ukraine, Crimea and Balaklava. www.johnkean.net https://www.facebook.com/JohnKeanAuthorPage/ Part Two of the Diving Bikers series of trips features John Kean undertaking his solo journey around the Black Sea countries on a KTM 990 Adventure S loaded with scuba diving gear. With the traditional routes closed due to the problems caused by the Arab Spring, Syria could not be used for access via Jordan through to Turkey. Instead, John had a carpenter in Cairo knock up a wooden crate and pack the bike for air freight to Istanbul. Overcoming a mountain of paperwork and civil unrest the journey finally began in the summer 2012 when the bike was reassembled in Turkey. From there the trip continued into Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova and Ukraine with diving in Varna, Kaliakra, Kirovohrad, Balaklava and Crimea. Along the way were some interesting experiences such as a WW2 battle re-enactment in Dnipropetrovsk, a visit to the cold war nuclear submarine base tunneled deep into a mountainside and dry suit tech diving on a WW2 Black Sea shipwreck. The 8,000 km bike trip finishes with John squeezing his way onto a Russian freighter ship sailing from Mersin, Turkey to Port Said in Egypt. Russia seizes Ukrainian naval ships in major escalation of tensions

01:16
The Ukrainian president has proposed imposing martial law after Russian forces shot at and seized three Ukrainian navy vessels in the Black Sea. Russia had already blocked passage through the Kerch Strait, a narrow body of water nestled between Crimea and the Russian mainland, after three Ukrainian navy ships made what the Russian coast guard called an unauthorised crossing through Russian territorial waters. The incident began on Sunday after the Ukrainian navy claimed a Russian coast guard vessel rammed a Ukrainian navy tugboat, which was travelling with two Ukrainian navy artillery boats from Odessa on the Black Sea to Mariupol in the Sea of Azov, via the Kerch Strait.

Russian Warship Stalks U.S. Navy Vessel In Black Sea As Ukraine ‘Vulnerable To Attack’ SUBSCRIBE ►http://bit.ly/2FGURX1 #Welcome to the ALNEWS Channel! ====================================================================== Since Russia annexed Crimea in 2014, Moscow has taken a dim view of US Navy warships entering the Black Sea. Michael Petersen, director of the Naval War College’s Russia Maritime Studies Institute, said a US presence in the region is important after the shipping incident in the Kerch Strait. “The US has committed to upholding international law, which Russia has consistently violated in the Black Sea,” Petersen said. Tensions between Kiev and Moscow have come to a head in recent weeks after the Russian coast guard seized three Ukrainian ships in the Black Sea, damaging already frayed relations. He says most are glad to have left Ukraine even if Russia isn't delivering as much as hoped. Video: Russian troops fire warning shots as Ukrainian military march towards Crimea air base

01:50
Russian forces fired warning shots in to the air as ranks of unarmed Ukrainian soldiers marched towards them at Belbek air base in Crimea on Tuesday (March 4). Russian troops backed by armoured personnel carriers took over Belbek military airport near the port of Sevastopol last Friday (February 28). Russia's Black Sea fleet is based in Sevastopol. On Tuesday a column of Ukrainian soldiers marched towards the Russian forces while chanting and carrying the Ukrainian flag. As they approached the line of armed Russian soldiers and military vehicles guarding the base, the Russian forces fired warning shots into the air and warned them not to approach any further. Once the Ukrainian soldiers reached the line of Russian forces, the Ukrainian and Russian commanders spoke as armed Russian soldiers surrounded them. There were no incidents. Russia fires at Ukrainian ships and captures three vessels off Crimea

02:47
Russia has opened fire on Ukrainian ships and captured three vessels in a major escalation of tensions off the coast of Crimea. Three sailors have been wounded after the Ukrainian navy said two artillery boats were hit by the strikes in the Black Sea. Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko called an emergency session of his war cabinet and has asked parliament to vote on whether to impose martial law on the country for 60 days. Throwing his weight behind the measure, which is not guaranteed to pass, he said it "in no way means that Ukraine will carry out any offensive actions". "I want to emphasise separately that we have all irrefutable evidence that this aggression, this attack on the Ukrainian Navy's warships was not a mistake, not an accident, but a deliberate action," he added. Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) said it used weapons after the Ukrainian ships ignored demands to stop and that it impounded three vessels which had illegally crossed the border. The three injured sailors are receiving medical treatment and their lives are not in danger, the FSB said. Ukraine's ambassador to the UK said Russian special forces had captured two armoured artillery boats and a tugboat in an "act of aggression". Ever since the Russian annexation of Crimea from Ukraine, tensions have been rising in the Black Sea. NATO and its allies have continued to provide an enhanced forward presence, with significant maritime power and ongoing support and training for the Ukrainian armed forces. This video, recorded in 2016, shows NATO's presence and why the Black Sea is so important.

Ukraine Declares Martial Law Following Sea Clash with Russia

15:05
Anya Parampil reports on the high-seas drama brewing between Russia and Ukraine after the Russian Navy says Ukraine failed to follow procedure for passing the Strait of Kerch, which connects the Black Sea and Azov Sea. As a result, Russia fired on the Ukranian ships and towed them to Crimea. On Monday, the UN Security Council voted to reject Russia’s initiative to discuss the incident as a violation of Russia’s borders. Anya is joined by a panel of experts, including Former UK MP George Galloway, International Affairs Analyst Mark Sleboda, Sputnik News Analyst Dmitry Babich, and Dan Lazare, journalist and author of The Frozen Republic: How the Constitution Is Paralyzing Democracy.
