Get my free drum lessons here: http://cobusmethod.com/lessons/ The motivation behind this lesson is that Jared and I wanted to give really good advice on improving your drum sound that very clearly applies to ALL levels of drums, even the extremely entry-level kits that most people start out with. It's also important to us that this advice requires NO money to apply, because we know that not everybody is able to invest in new heads or new gear. My first kit was an absolute clunker, and hearing and seeing what this lesson is about would have made a huge difference back then! We really hope this helps you to get a better sound out of your kit! We filmed for a long time and discussed MANY tips and tricks and details around each of the points we talked about, but we also wanted this video to be really condensed and punchy, which is why it isn't that long. That way a sales person can help you take the merchandise and sort of fit it into your budget. It's helpful to do some research on the brand names for drums ahead of time. There are names such as Tama, Pearl, DW, Yamaha, and Mapex. There is a variety of brands out there in most music stores. Most brands have what's called an entry line drum set, which means basically the first line of drums or the beginner line of drums from a major company. The drum set I'm playing right now is a Star Classic from Tama which is the highest level of drums that Tama makes. So, it's helpful to figure out some of the levels from each drum set company so that you know where you want to enter into your budget. Drums, in general, are priced on the material that they're made out of such as the type of wood that goes into it. These drums are made out of maple which is one of the highest level woods you can get. There is birch. There is mahogany. And there's also the level of plies that go into each drum. Plies are the layers of wood that make up each drum. The lesser the plies sometimes the less expensive, and the more the plies most of the time is the more expensive. Also, the type of metal and design that they use has a lot to do with the type of drums or the level and the price of the drums. When you're choosing a drum set or buying a drum set it also helps to take a look into what they include. Do they include all five drums? Do they include four drums? Do they include the cymbals? Some of the lower line kits you're going to buy are not going to include the cymbals. It's just going to be the package they call the shell package which is just the drums themselves. This right here is called a five piece drum set, five drums, one, two, three, four, five. They have two cymbals included and a pair of hi-hats which we'll talk about a little later. This is sort of your standard drum set that you're going to find in a store. They have two package deals usually a larger drum set of a 22 inch drum mixed with some larger toms of 12, 13, and 16. These happen to be actually a 10, 12, 14, and a 14 inch snare. You have different configurations. So, a lot of times it's the configuration, it's the material, it's the make of the wood, and that will determine how much you're going to spend.

John Good brings you into the DW Assembly Line to show you how he suggests tuning your drums, regardless of the brand. He tunes 3 different types of drums: Tom @ 0:40 Snare @ 5:14 Bass Drum @ 10:52 John says it best, but to summarize the key points: -Always do one head at a time -Before tightening the tension rods, push hard on the center of the head to "seat/center" the head. You'll hear it crackle, but don't worry, you're not damaging the head. Only breaking it in. -First use only your fingers to tighten the tension rods, tightening opposing rods so that the head seats flat and even. Similar to how you'd tighten lugs on a car wheel. Alternating in a criss-cross pattern. -Once all the rods are finger-tight, it's time to use a key. A couple turns on each, still following a criss-cross pattern, is all you should do per round. Each time you complete a full circle, it's good to listen to where you're at. -Now, each time you complete a round, is when you really do fine tuning. Lightly tap your finger about an inch from the edge of the drum on each rod and listen to hear which rods are higher or lower in pitch from the rest. This is the hardest part, because it takes a very critical ear (that most guitar players don't even have ;). You'll also find that if you come across a rod that is lower than the rest, the one directly across from it is probably also lower. It's good to think of them in pairs. -Continue making rounds with a couple turns on each rod, followed by a round of fine tuning until you feel the head is at the pitch you desire. -If you ever feel like you made a mistake or feel like it's just messed up, you can always completely loosen all the rods on that side and start over with the finger-tightening. Practice makes perfect! -Remember that tuning is very subjective; everybody has a different preference. Many people prefer to tune the bottom head slightly lower than the top so that the note bends down in pitch when you hit it. -Also, be sure to replace you bottom heads about once every four time you change the top. Many drummers assume that because they don't hit the bottom head, that they can last forever. But indeed they do take a sympathetic beating. Watch more How to Start a Band videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/399070-How-to-Buy-Drums Take the guesswork out of purchasing these percussion instruments by knowing exactly what's in a drum kit and what to keep in mind when buying one. Step 1: Buy name brands Buy brand names for greater reliability and resale value. New brand name drums for a beginner will cost about $500. Used drum sets can be had for about $200. Tip It's common to buy cymbal packs or lower line cymbals. Brand name cymbals are often very expensive. Step 2: Know basic components Know the basic components of a drum set. You should include a bass drum, a snare drum, two tom tom drums, a floor tom, two hi hat cymbals, a ride cymbal, and a crash cymbal. The seven pieces of hardware include the snare drum stand, three cymbal stands, the bass drum pedal, a seat, and drumsticks. Step 3: Buy a set Buy a set, which is generally less expensive that buying components piece by piece. If you're buying used set, look for one that says "whole package" to make sure you're getting all the instruments and the hardware. Step 4: Inspect Inspect the set to see that both the top and bottom heads are on the drums and that the drum heads are in good shape. See that none of the tuning lugs are missing. The laminate drum finish should be in good condition. Step 5: Consider electronic Consider an electronic drum set, which uses rubber or mesh pads, if you're in an apartment or other place where noise may be a concern. You can plug in headphones for nearly silent practice when you're not plugged in to an amp. And it can create hundreds of different sounds. Did You Know? Russ Prager set a world record for the longest drumming marathon by one person, lasting 120 hours in 2009.

Whether you’re a beginning drummer, you know a beginning drummer, or you or someone you know is getting back into the drums…this video is for YOU! Today we ask the question “what does a new drummer REALLY need to buy?” With all the drum set options out there, buying and collecting all the necessary gear can be an overwhelming pain and expense. In my opinion, however, a beginner drummer DOES NOT need a drum set immediately. My “more frugal” process involves starting small with sticks and a practice pad, then growing a setup from there. It’s important to really get started and get going with the drums before forking out all the cash and making the long-term investment. I advise students to wait a bit before purchasing a kit. When they are ready, there are lots of used kit options out for much less money…We then conclude today with my rant on “SKILLS BEFORE GEAR”. :) If you like what you’ve seen, I hope you’ll SUBSCRIBE! This channel is all about helping YOU become a better drummer, one week at a time, so you can impact your audience and the musicians you play with. NEW VIDEO EVERY FRIDAY!!

These are the best electronic drumset for the $300-$400 price range. Here Are All The Drumsets Listed In The Video: (These are affiliate links that help support the channel at no cost to you) Alesis Nitro Mesh https://amzn.to/2PGwRca Simmons SD350 https://amzn.to/2ohayxh Behringer XD8USB https://amzn.to/2LyK5UY Let's kick off the list with what Simmons has to offer. The SD350 comes with all mesh pads on a very small 2 post drum rack frame. It has 8” drums, the toms are single zone, and the snare is dual zone. The cymbals are 10” across. The drum module is pretty limited. It only has 179 sounds, and has the bare minimum selection of ports. A headphone jack, aux for your phone, and a master out. Unfortunately this set does not have a kick drum pad either. The only thing that makes this set unique is that it has a decent iphone app, but that is not worth buying this set over. Moving on to Alesis, we have the brand new Alesis Nitro Mesh. Now there was a version of this call just the Nitro, but it’s getting very very hard to find at music websites, so I’m guessing it’s been discontinued and replaced by the Nitro Mesh Version. At $350, this has similar sizes to the Simmons. 8” drums, 10” cymbals. But this set is on a 4 post aluminum drum rack, has an actual kick drum tower, and the module is much more powerful. The Nitro module comes with 385 sounds, room to add an extra tom and cymbal. USB Midi, and Classic in out ports, Stereo master outs, Aux in for your phone, and a headphone jack. I’ll go over my final thoughts of the pros and cons near the end of the video, but honestly this kit stomps all over the Simmons drumset. Finally we have 2 Behringer drumsets. The XD8USB, and the XD80USB. 123 175 I’m grouping them together because they are practically the same kit with one very tinny difference. So both kits come with 8” rubber pads for the toms and snare, and 12” cymbal pads. The XD8 has a module with 123 sounds inside, and the XD80 has 175 sounds. This drumset has all the drum pads that Alesis used to use 4 years ago on the DM6 line which is now discontinued. One interesting thing is that the Nitro Mesh and these behringer drumsets still do share an identical kick drum pad. They are all sourcing parts from the same company, Medelie. So you’ve bought an electronic drumset, it might have cost $2000, or $500. You’re loving it, and you’ve bought a new cymbal here and there off ebay. But you’ve come to the realization that a major overhaul is needed to get the drumset to the level you want it at. At what point do you say, just forget about it I’ll buy a better drumset. VS just buying 15 parts and pieces from different websites and upgrading it that way. You can go either way honestly. I’ve seen dudes with an alesis nitro that have like 3 modules and 15 drums and cymbals. I’ve also seen guys that sell the kit on Facebook and use that money towards a modestly better kit with the features they are really missing. The REAL question is whats the magic number? What is that threshold that you hit and decide upgrades aren’t worth it anymore? So in my head my number is something like 50%. Not a hard and fast number, but it’s something. Lets say you bought the TD17KL for $1000. You kinda want the mesh toms, and a 3 zone ride. And come to think of it and extra crash would be nice too. Lets add up the numbers: If you want mesh toms, just going on ebay you can find two mesh toms from Alesis for $100. But I’m guessing most will want to make the drumset out of parts from the same brand. Roland is a tad more expensive and you have to REALLY look around. At first I saw a PDX6 for $60. Kinda small for me, so I checked reverb, and you can pick up a PD85 for $85. Get 3 of those and that’s $255. A Better ride like a CY13R is $130. And for the extra cymbal.. We’re already solid because we’ll take that ride cymbal we already had, and just use it as a crash. Sell the rubber tom pads we already had for For $25 each, and we get back $75. So all in all, that upgrade would cost about $310. So I know what you’re thinking, Justin, what about the TD17KV. It comes with the 12” snare, and the mesh toms already. Also that version of the TD17 module has Bluetooth! It doesn’t have the extra crash and cy13R, but overall it’s less work to just buy that one for $1200. That’s the kind of situation is where things get confusing. For me, the difference between the upgrade price and the new drumset price is so close, that buying the upgrades makes more sense. If you bought those used upgrades, you don’t have to sell your set for $800 and then pay the $400 difference to get the TD17KV. So you save a ton of time right there, and you’ll get the better ride, and solid toms. So in a dilemma THAT close I would just do the upgrades. I want to buy a different set when my vision for my ideal kit is just drastically different from what I have RIGHT NOW. For example. If I have a Alesis Surge mesh because I wanted to test the waters of drumming and make sure it was for me. But after a year I decide that I Really want to have better cymbals, a better module. Upgrading that drumset just doesn’t make any sense. The module purchase would be at least $500 if I wanted something much nicer, better cymbals are going to cost at least $100 each, and before you know it, the cost of upgrades is over 100% the cost of the original drumset. Upgrades are a death by a thousand cuts type of a thing. One new cymbal becomes two. A bigger snare leads to a nicer module. Before you know it, you have a mid range drumset with $2000 trapped in it after a few years. So again, I tend to say, I’ve I’m thinking about spending half the cost of my set in new upgrades, I would stop and really think about just dumping the kit and buying something else. Go on eBay and capitalize on a different drummer that mindlessly upgraded everything without thinking. ✔️✔️The Official 65 Drum Tshirt! https://teespring.com/65-drums-midnight-edrums#pid=369&cid=6513&sid=back 🔴🔴Support 65 Drums On Patreon: www.patreon.com/65drums (These are links that help support the channel by earning me a small commission at no cost to you) Camera Gear I Use To Make Youtube Videos: ✅✅Canon SL2 http://amzn.to/2AT5SlR ✅✅Rode Video Mic Pro v3 http://amzn.to/2CCM9Y9 ✅✅ Solid YouTube Lighting: (mine was discontinued) https://amzn.to/2oUWsCg ✅✅ My Audio Interface: https://amzn.to/2CK43gm ✔️Click This Link To Subscribe! https://www.youtube.com/c/65Drums?sub_confirmation=1

Pearl e/Merge Hybrid 5-piece Electronic Drum Kit Features: A collaboration between Pearl Drums and Korg Pearl poplar shells and hardware are attractive, robust, and durable Acoustic-like look and response Streamlined MDL-1 module packs 35 preset drum kits and 700 sounds Deeply sampled modern and vintage Pearl drum kits Decades of electronic samples from the Korg vault Importable WAV files and settings via USB drive 16GB internal memory boasts 12 hours' record time Versatile analog and digital outputs for recording and live sound reproduction Choose from 36 FX: compression, tube saturation, hall reverb, radio filtering, auto wah, and more 6-layer PUREtouch drum pads are fast and accurate, from center to edge Wave Trigger Technology imparts unparalleled snare realism Multi-layer PUREtouch cymbal pads have realistic weight, sway, and choke mechanics Drums: 10/12/14" toms, 14" snare, 18" kick pad Cymbals: 14" hi-hat, 15" crash, 18" ride DB-25 breakout cable + 3 additional 1/4" trigger inputs Icon e-Rack with Pearl tom and cymbal mounts adds significant value MDL-1 Module Sounds The MDL-1 blends a robust acoustic sample library with a lifetime of Korg's electronics and beat machines. On the acoustic side of the spectrum, you'll find a brand-new collection of deep-sampled Pearl kits, masterfully captured in Nashville, TN. Kits are organized by modern and vintage types, along with some familiar genre-specific and historic patches to call up instant inspiration. On the electronic side, you've got decades of sounds —drum machines, keyboard instruments, and more — ripped straight from the Korg vault. A selection of orchestral, concert, and world percussion sounds complete the library. Layout What helps set the MDL-1 apart from other modules is its streamlined interface. All major functions — kit sounds, click track, BPP, headphone and master levels, and more — can be called up via dedicated buttons and knobs on the front panel. Customization is accessible via a series of soft buttons. Ambience slider A feature we're really excited about in the MDL-1 is its dedicated Ambience slider. This allows you to raise and lower, on the fly, the level of the room mics captured during the recording session. This is a feature you'll find in many drum VIs, but one we've scarcely seen as powerful and accessible as here in the e/Merge. Importable sounds and settings Got a drum library you trust? Looking to sample your own acoustic kits? The e/Merge allows you to load in your own drum samples as WAV files via USB drive. You can also flash in settings this way, allowing you to save and recall complete sets by band, session, or style. 12 hours' record time Capture grooves and jot down song ideas with the MDL-1's internal 16GB memory — capable of 12 hours of record time. Flexible I/O Live musicians and session players both will appreciate the versatile input and output options here in the MDL-1. Eight dedicated 1/4" outs for drums and cymbals give the sound engineer full control of your balance into a PA or recording medium. For ease of use, pre-mixed mono or stereo 1/4" outs are also included for feeding a drum amp or smaller mixer. Audio out via USB makes the MDL-1 a capable interface for multitrack recording. And MIDI out via USB and 5-pin MIDI gives you full control of your virtual instruments. An 1/8" aux input facilitates jamming and song learning. Room to grow The e/Merge's eight drum and cymbal pads connect to the MDL-1 via a DB-25 breakout cable. Additional pads — splashes, percussion pads, and extra toms — connect via three 1/4" trigger inputs on the side of the module.

The newly announced TD25KVX is a very interesting and fun drumset to play. But is it worth that $4000 price tag? This drumset is actually a combination of like 3 Roland kits. It has the snare from the TD30KV, the cymbals of the TD17KVX, the hihat and module of the TD25kv. The kick drum is brand new, the KD180 feels incredible to play on, although it is a tad loud. Overall this kit is incredible EXCEPT for the price. The price suggests that this drumset is flagship worthy, but the module says otherwise. No faders, sample import, individual outs, or inputs. Great drumset, but it costs about $500 too much. Let me know what you think of this kit!
