Emil nolde: an artist ‘more inclined to contrast and discord’

06:51
Emil nolde: an artist ‘more inclined to contrast and discord’ Emil Nolde is something of a loner in the history of 20th century European art. Tangentially associated with the German Expressionist group Die Brücke, he backed away from continued involvement. The caricaturish view, which bears some relationship to the truth, is that he was a recluse who lived on the bleak shores of the Baltic and North Seas and made wintry paintings with spiritual overtones such as Blue Day by the Sea, 1940, or Landscape [North Friesland], 1930. He is, though, an indispensibl...

Top 10 Scary Art Paintings by Famous Artists in the World

06:05
You will discover with us top 10 scary art paintings by famous artists. Paintings and art are there to inspire us, reflect the world around us and show us our own failings and glories but every so often you see something so horrific or terrifying, you wonder why it was ever created in the first place. Here we list 10 scary terrifying paintings by world famous artists that may just give you nightmares. 1. The Great Red Dragon and The Beast of The Sea by William Blake. That includes this picture by William Blake called 'The Great Red Dragon and The Beast of The Sea'. 2. Study After Velazquez's Portrait of Innocence X by Francis Bacon. This piece was a response to Velazquez's portrait of Pope Innocence X in which Velazquez has an inquisitive pope looking as though he is about to speak. 3. Dante and Virgil In Hell by William-Adolphe Bouguereau Depicting Hell is never going to create a pleasant image but Bouguereau thought he'd bring a scene from Dante's Inferno to life. 4. The Death of Marat by Edvard Munch Norway's most famous painter is known for his troubling images and this is just one where he depicts the murder of the French writer Paul Marat. 5. Heads Severed by Theodore Gericault Gericault honed his painting style by painting limbs and torsos of dead bodies and cadavers in the morgue. 6. The Temptation of St. Anthony by Matthias Grunewald Grunewald was known for religious imagery and this is a depiction of one of the many trials the St. Anthony faced whilst worshiping in the desert where he was attacked by several demons. 7. Mask Still Life III by Emil Nolde Emil Nolde often used his form of expressionism in order to distort reality. In this image he distorted a study of various masks and a shrunken head that were in the Berlin museum to gruesome effect. 8. Saturn Devouring His Son by Francisco Goya In Roman myth, the God Saturn devours his son in order to make sure no being greater than he shall ver exist and it is this dark scene that Goya painted on the wallof his house, perhaps a reflection on his own aging process. 9.Judith Beheading Holofernes by Caravaggio An Old Testament story that has the invasion of Israel at the hands of Holofernes stopped by Judith, who wins his affections and then beheads him after getting him drunk. This graphic image is visceral and shows the determination on Judith's face that makes it all that more grim. 10. The Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymous Bosch Bosch was known for stark, dark religious imagery and this one is split into panels that show the creation of man, the garden of Eden and the punishment for committing sins. Behind the scenes: Anselm Kiefer's studio at Barjac

03:10
The artist Anselm Kiefer moved to Barjac, near Nîmes in the south of France, in 1992. Over time, his home and studio complex there - built on the site of an abandoned silk factory - expanded to include a series of extraordinary interventions in the landscape. Kiefer has compared his studios to laboratories, and says they are also akin to refineries or mines. Although he now lives and works in Paris, Barjac continues to provide many of the materials for his work. It also acts as an exhibition venue, displaying sculptures, paintings and installations in some 50 different enclosures across the site. Giovanni Bellini

06:31

Moyna Flannigan | Conscious Bodies

05:13
Moyna Flannigan wants her paintings to feel like believable places, without representing anything specifically in the real world. Images of fictional characters, her work casts a critical (and often humorous) eye on the effects of power on identity. We visit her in her studio by the sea to learn more: how she uses collage, her interest in the choreographer Pina Bausch, and why she believes her paintings don’t tell stories. Artists in Profile is a series of films that explore the ideas, materials and processes of some of the best-known contemporary artists working today. Filmed in the artists’ studios from Argyll & Bute to Berlin; in train stations, a primary school, the shore of a loch, and the Glasgow Necropolis; these videos aim to give an insight into the spaces where artists create their work, and the places that inspire them. 2/5 Anselm Kiefer: Remembering the Future

14:01
First broadcast: Nov 2014. There is no-one quite like Anselm Kiefer. Having achieved fame and notoriety in equal measure in the 1980s, he has become one of the world's most singular and successful artists. Working with themes of history, memory and mythology, Kiefer produces work that is consistently controversial, and monumental in its scale and ambition. In this imagine...Alan Yentob joins the artist at his studios in France and Germany as he prepares for a retrospective at the Royal Academy. In a series of frank interviews set against the backdrop of his awe-inspiring studios, Kiefer discusses the impact of his most significant pieces, installs a selection of new work, and explains why he is as excited and driven by his practice now, at the age of 69, as he was when he began.

Nazi-looted Cezanne painting to be shared between Swiss, French museums | DW | 03.07.2018

06:39
http://www.dw.com/en/nazi-looted-cezanne-painting-to-be-shared-between-swiss-french-museums/a-44509400 The Bern Museum of Fine Art in Switzerland will retain ownership of a Paul Cezanne painting found in a Nazi-era trove in 2014, the artist's heirs confirmed on Tuesday. They also said that the museum had agreed to regularly exhibit the work in Cezanne's hometown of Aix-en-Provence, France. "This solution in the spirit of the Swiss-French friendship and partnership allows two great museums, Bern Museum of Fine Art and the Musee Granet in Aix-en-Provence, to show a masterpiece by our grandfather Paul Cezanne for the benefit and enjoyment of a great audience," said Philippe Cezanne (pictured above), great-grandson of the master painter. The painting was found in the now-infamous Gurlitt collection, originally amassed by German art dealer Hildebrand Gurlitt under direction from the Nazis to sell or get rid of "degenerate" art seized from museums. Gurlitt collection shown in Bern August Macke: Landscape With Sailboats "Of all of us, he gave the brightest and purest timbre to color," declared Franz Marc after his friend and fellow artist August Macke fell in World War I in 1914. Macke painted his sailboat images at Lake Tegernsee in Bavaria. This painting was among the roughly 1,500 found in the Cornelius Gurlitt collection. Gurlitt collection shown in Bern Otto Mueller: Reclining Female Nude at Waterside Slender women are a characteristic motif of the influential German expressionist art movement. This model reposes unclothed on a water-surrounded rock. Gurlitt collection shown in Bern Ernst Ludwig Kirchner: "Melancholy Girl" A difficult, suspicious and depressed man, Kirchner created this wood cutting in 1922. Nazis removed many of his works from German museums and defamed them as "degenerate." Born in the German region of Franconia, Kirchner was buried in Switzerland. Gurlitt collection shown in Bern Otto Dix: Leonie The artist had a reputation for social criticism even as a young man. "I can't get ahead; my paintings can't be sold. I'm either becoming famous or infamous," he said in 1920, not long before finishing this painting. Gurlitt collection shown in Bern Emil Nolde: Broad Landscape with Clouds "My homeland was like a fairytale, my parents' home in the flat countryside, thousands of larks soaring up and down in jubilation, my country of wonder from sea to sea," enthused the North German painter Maler Emil Nolde. Broad expanses and the blurred transitions between sky, earth and water were his motifs. Gurlitt collection shown in Bern Franz Marc: Sitting Horse No motif or animal fascinated Marc more than horse, a metaphor for purity and innocence in the eyes of this expressionist painter. His daring experimentation with color resulted in a group of paintings of blue horses in 1910. This image, also in the Gurlitt collection, was a predecessor. Author: Stefan Dege (rf) But Gurlitt kept many of the paintings, and his son Cornelius Gurlitt stored the collection in his Munich apartment until he died at the age of 81 in 20

Duck and Cover (1951)

09:14
This video suits both the start of the Cold War AND National Preparedness Month! Immediately after World War 2, 2 Superpowers emerged from the ruins of a blasted Europe. Across the sea to the West was the United States. A Capitalist nation with (mostly) free elections and government. Meanwhile, occupying the Eastern half of Europe was the Soviet Union. A Communist nation (at least, outwardly). A single-party dictatorship that suppressed opposing speech. The initial goodwill they had for each other, having just overcome the Nazi regime did not last long. The two nations were very alien to each other and started gathering allies, wary of invasion by the other. In September 1947, the Soviets created Cominform, the purpose of which was to enforce orthodoxy within the international communist movement and tighten political control over Soviet satellites through coordination of communist parties in the Eastern Bloc. By 1947, US president Harry S. Truman's advisers urged him to take immediate steps to counter the Soviet Union's influence, citing Stalin's efforts (amid post-war confusion and collapse) to undermine the US by encouraging rivalries among capitalists that could precipitate another war. In February 1947, the British government announced that it could no longer afford to finance the Greek monarchical military regime in its civil war against communist-led insurgents. The American government's response to this announcement was the adoption of containment, the goal of which was to stop the spread of communism. Truman delivered a speech that called for the allocation of $400 million to intervene in the war and unveiled the Truman Doctrine, which framed the conflict as a contest between free peoples and totalitarian regimes. Duck and Cover by Federal Civil Defense Administration Published 1951 Usage Public Domain Topics FedFlix, ntis.gov Federal Civil Defense Administration Duck and Cover (Wikipedia) NTIS AVA11109VNB1 From the Wikipedia: Duck and Cover was a social guidance film produced in 1951 by the United States federal government's Civil Defense branch shortly after the Soviet Union began nuclear testing. Written by Raymond J. Mauer and directed by Anthony Rizzo of Archer Productions and made with the help of schoolchildren from New York City and Astoria, New York, it was shown in schools as the cornerstone of the government's "duck and cover" public awareness campaign. The movie states that nuclear war could happen at any time without warning, and U.S. citizens should keep this constantly in mind and be ever ready.

Places to see in ( Krefeld - Germany )

01:36
Places to see in ( Krefeld - Germany ) On the left bank of the Rhine, not far from Düsseldorf, Krefeld is a conurbation of towns incorporated into a city at the start of the 20th century. At that time Krefeld was a booming textiles town with a forte for silk and velvet weaving. Even now, Krefeld is called the “Samt- und Seidenstadt,” velvet and silk city, and there are still a few places recording this heritage. One is the German Textiles Museum, which draws on one of the world’s richest collections of fabrics. The affluence generated by textile manufacturing is also unmistakeable in some of the properties in the city: The most remarkable are Haus Lange and Haus Esters, designed by Bauhaus member Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and now a department of the city’s art museum. In the eastern suburb of Linn is the oldest castle on the Lower Rhine. Burg Linn was raised by the local landowner Otto von Linn in the 1100s and by the 1400s was one of the largest moated castles in the region. In the 18th-century hunting lodge neighbouring the castle there’s a museum for the Lower Rhine region. The lodge was for the Archbishop-Elector of Cologne, Clemens August of Bavaria. The main building for the Kunstmuseen Krefeld is in an Eclectic-style palace inaugurated in 1899. The museum’s reserve is enormous, consisting of 14,000 works from the fields of painting, sculpture, graphical art, applied art, photography and new media . The strong point though is 20th-century art, beginning with sculpture by Rodin, one of Monet’s studies of the Houses of the Parliament and paintings by Expressionists like Emil Nolde, Heinrich Campendonk, Kandinsky and Kirchner. Haus Lange and Haus Esters come under the “Kunstmuseen Krefeld” umbrella and are both museum pieces in their own right. The German Textile Museum has an internationally recognised fund of textiles, clothing and woven fabrics from all time periods and parts of the world. If you need a breather or somewhere for a morning jog, Uerdingen’s city park is somewhere to keep on the radar. There’s even more horticulture at Krefeld’s botanical garden in the Oppum district. On Luisenstraße 15 is a museum with a privileged insight into Krefeld’s silk and velvet industries. This house contained a workshop where for more than 100 years liturgical vestments were woven from Chinese and Italian silk yarns. Krefeld’s most visited attraction is its zoo, which opened in 1938 and today welcomes more than half a million people a year. The origins of Krefeld’s city forest go back a century to the silk manufacturer Wilhelm Deuß who donated land to the city and set up a foundation for a much-needed recreation space for Krefeld’s workers. If you need an idea for an evening out, Krefeld’s Kulturfabrik is a performing arts venue in a converted factory. Hülser Berg, the tallest natural hill is also here and has a 30-metre lookout tower, the Johannesturm at its crest. In Uerdingen by the Rhine there’s a brandy distillery anchored in Napoleon’s occupation of the left bank of the Rhine at the start of the 19th century. At Friedrich-Ebert-Straße 42, Villa Merländer is the home of the Krefeld silk merchant Richard Merländer, who was born in Mülheim just across the Rhine in 1874. He was both homosexual and Jewish and so was persecuted by the Nazis, being forced to sell his business and property for less than they were worth in the 1930s. In North Rhine-Westphalia the conurbation is compact enough that within half an hour you could be in any number of other exciting places. Constable, Delacroix, Friedrich, Goya. Die Erschütterung der Sinne

07:04

The Secret Garden is a garden centre based between Pontypool and Abergavenny that I regularly visit. The customer service, location and food is amazing. I chose to do this painting from a photo I took of the entrance! Many thanks for all your support! Willem de Kooning- CASTA DIVA- MARIA CALLAS

05:37
