The Cherry Creek School District which has jurisdiction over Sunrise Elementary issued a statement.'This is a heartbreaking loss for the school community,' the district said.'Mental health supports will be made available for any students who need help processing the loss.'We do not tolerate bullying of any kind in our schools and we have a comprehensive bullying prevention program in place at all of our schools.'The safety and well-being of students is our highest priority and we strive every today to ensure schools are safe, welcoming and supportive places that support learning.'We were made aware of that video when a media outlet approached us with it.We took immediate action in response, turning the video over to police and addressing the matter with students.' Who gets to decide when to end life support when a person is brain dead? The mother of 13-year-old Jahi McMath, who was declared brain dead Thursday, three days after undergoing surgery to remove her tonsils, said Tuesday that the family should make the call. "I don't want her off life support because I really feel like she can wake up," Nailah Winkfield told CNN's Piers Morgan. "I feel like it's just been a rough week for her and, if they just give her some more time, then she'll be able to wake up." Jahi's family has presented Children's Hospital & Research Center in Oakland, California, with a cease-and-desist letter aimed at preventing the hospital from taking her off a ventilator, attorney Christopher B. Dolan said Tuesday. "If the hospital wants to terminate Jahi's life, they should go to court and get a judge to authorize that, not pressure a parent into signing a document in the middle of the night or telling them at 8:30 tomorrow morning your child will be (dead)," he told CNN. Doctors had recommended the tonsillectomy to treat Jahi's sleep apnea, weight gain, inability to concentrate, short attention span and uncontrolled urination, her uncle Omari Sealey told CNN on Monday in a telephone interview. "They said that she would have more energy, focus more, lose weight, and the urinating would stop," he said. The surgery, which occurred December 9, initially appeared to have gone well, said Sandy Chatman, Jahi's grandmother who is herself a nurse and saw the girl in the recovery room. "She was alert and talking, and she was asking for a Popsicle because she said her throat hurt," Chatman said. But Jahi was then moved to the intensive-care unit, and her relatives were denied access to the eighth-grader for 30 minutes; when they finally were allowed to see her, they knew something was wrong. "Upon entry, they saw that there was way too much blood," Chatman said. "We kept asking, 'Is this normal?'" Sealey said. "Some nurses said, 'I don't know,' and some said, 'Yes.' There was a lot of uncertainty and a lack of urgency." Sealey said that when Chatman noticed that her granddaughter's oxygen levels were dangerously low, she called for help. But Jahi went into cardiac arrest. The medical staff performed chest compressions to revive her and gave her clotting medications, but nothing worked. On Tuesday, a CT scan revealed that two-thirds of Jahi's brain was swollen. Sealey said that Jahi's brain had been deprived of oxygen. "Now she is 100% brain damaged," he said. "Medically dead." CNN could not independently confirm Sealey's account. When asked about the case, hospital spokeswoman Melinda Krigel cited privacy laws. A statement from the hospital's chief of pediatrics, Dr. David Durand, read: "Our hearts go out to this patient and her family. Unfortunately, we have not been authorized by the family to share information with the public about this matter. Consequently, we are not able to correct misperceptions created about this sad situation. "Nonetheless, we want to assure the community that we are doing everything in our capacity to provide support to the grieving family. We have been caring for children in this community for over 100 years and have a longstanding commitment to delivering the highest quality care for all." Dr. Lisa Thebner, a pediatrician in private practice in New York who was not involved in the case, said excessive bleeding -- though rare -- is not unheard of in such operations, given that the tonsils are removed from the back of the throat, an area rich in blood vessels. Still, she said, "This was a highly unusual complication." When told that his niece was brain dead, Sealey said the entire family went into "complete devastation." "We pray over her daily," Sealey said. "We kiss her. I charge her iPod and make sure it is in her ears every night when I sleep next to her." But he said he had accepted that she was legally dead. An official from the Oakland coroner's office told CNN that Jahi's death was reported Thursday to the office. "Once a death is reported to us, we have a duty and responsibility to immediately proceed to where the body lies, examine the body, make identification, make inquiry into the circumstances, manner, and means of death, and, as circumstances warrant, either order its removal for further investigation or disposition, or release the body to the next of kin," the official said, quoting California law. Sealey said that though the family hoped to keep Jahi on life support, hospital representatives had told them Monday that would not be an option. That has left the coroner's office in a delicate position. "Technically, we can go where the body lies and we can begin our investigation as to the causes of death," the official from the coroner's office said. "We have been gracious and we have allowed the parents and the hospital to maintain the child on life support."

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. A teen's health took a turn for the worse and has left her on life support. Now her relatives are trying to honor her wishes. "Our way to believe as a Jew," said the victim's mother, Aviva Zfat, "Is that everything goes through the heart. As long as the heart beats, the soul is in the heart, and therefore she is alive." Outside Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital, Aviva Zfat embraced her husband Ruben. Inside the hospital is there 19-year-old daughter, Danielle. 14 months ago, Danielle who grew up in Coral Springs, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. On Nov. 25th she was admitted to the hospital. On Jan. 1st her condition worsened and she was placed on life support. "We just want her to live," said Zfat in tears. "When God decides to take her, then he will take her. She's breathing, she's alive. She's up there alive, breathing. Take care of my daughter please. Give her life. Don't cut her off. Anybody can share any support. Please." Danielle and her family are Orthodox Jews. Their belief prohibits pulling the plug once life sustaining devices are in place. The family's attorney has filed an emergency motion in court. In that motion, in reads in part, "As of January 3, 2013, the physicians at the hospital have indicated that they will be removing all medical systems which support her life." "There's no analogy on life that's safe when you're talking about life," said family attorney, Moshe Rubenstein. "Life is the highest and it's our duty to move mountains. In fact, to give our own life to save a life." The other family attorney, Manachem Mayberg added, "The doctor's of the hospital specifically asked her whether she wanted to fight and continue her life to live. She blinked once for yes." Late Wednesday, the hospital released a notice saying, "Our hearts and compassion are with the family at this difficult time. Due to patient confidentiality, we are unable to discuss the medical aspects of this case, except to say that it was not the hospital's intention to remove life support. As an institution that values deeper caring, we do our utmost to respect religious and cultural beliefs." "If I can take her place," said Zfat, "I'll do it. I'll switch places. I'm older. I've done enough for me. She can have my time." Just 15-months ago, Danielle was a healthy teenager on her way to college in New York. On a November morning she woke up with numbness on one side of her body and her life has been changed ever since. The Zfat family is full of faith and believes there will be a resolution.

A 12-year-old girl remains on life support after being struck by a stray bullet in Paterson. Genesis Rincon was struck around 8:40 p.m. Saturday while riding her scooter on Rosa Parks Boulevard with two friends, police said. Genesis had left a family gathering to go to a nearby store with another girl and a boy, but the store was closed so they headed back to the event, authorities said. They were taking turns riding the scooter and were about a block away from the gathering when multiple shots rang out. Police believe the shooter was aiming at someone else when Genesis was hit. The little girl was rushed to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the head. As of Sunday afternoon, she was considered to be brain dead in the hospital, authorities said. The two other children she was with were not injured. Family, friends and many in the community are devastated over what happened. "They're hurting, they're in mourning, but they're outraged," said family spokesperson Rev. Della Fischer. "This is senseless." "Everybody's pretty distraught," said family friend Renea Simmons. "It's like you can't make any sense of things like this." Further details on the shooting, including what type of weapon was used and whether other people may have been involved, have not been disclosed. A loving big sister to three brothers and two sisters, Genesis will soon be a life saver. Her family is making arrangements to donate her organs. "You wonder how could people do things like this? She was a child and for somebody to just ride by and shoot a child," said Simmons. Family members are now at the little girl's bedside, saying their goodbyes. Her father told CBS 2′s Weijia Jiang that she will be taken off life support sometime Monday. A $2,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest. Anyone with information should call 973-523-TIPS. Authorities are trying to determine if the shooting is connected to one that happened early Saturday about a block away from where Rincon was struck. In that shooting, a 26-year-old man was wounded in the leg and underwent surgery. He remained hospitalized Sunday in stable condition. Thank you for watching. Have a nice day! Don't Forget To Subcribe My Channel: https://goo.gl/vCXdrM ABOUT: Agirl at the center of the medical and religious debate over brain death has died after surgery in New Jersey, her mother said Thursday.Nailah Winkfield said doctors declared her daughter Jahi McMath dead on June 22 from excessive bleeding and liver failure after an operation to treat an intestinal issue.McMath was declared dead in December 2013 when she was 13 after suffering irreversible brain damage during routine surgery in California to remove her tonsils and a coroner signed a death certificate.Several specialists concurred after neurological tests.Winkfield refused to accept the conclusion. She said her Christian beliefs compelled her to fight for continued care for her daughter, who she said showed signs of life through toe wriggles and finger movements.Winkfield flew her daughter to New Jersey, where she has remained on life support and received care in the state that accommodates religions that don't recognize brain death.'Jahi wasn't brain dead or any kind of dead,' Winkfield said.'She was a girl with a brain injury and she deserved to be cared for like any other child who had a brain injury.' McMath's case drew national attention amid the debate over brain death and religious beliefs.Conservative religious groups rallied behind Winkfield and helped raise money for McMath's continued care.Winkfield said she has quit her job, sold her home in Oakland and used savings to pay for McMath's care in New Jersey. The state's Medicaid program and donations have also contributed to the girl's care.'These last four-and-a-half years have not been easy,' Winkfield said.'I can go to sleep knowing I did everything possible for my kid and no one can take that away from me.' Winkfield and her lawyers had been trying to rescind the California death certificate as part of a medical malpractice lawsuit filed against Children's Hospital in Oakland. In refusing to throw out the lawsuit last year, a judge ruled that it was up to a jury to determine if the girl was still alive.Attorney Chris Dolan said the New Jersey death certificate eliminated that argument, but he and Winkfield are still debating whether to continue the fight and possibly set a precedent so other religious families don't have to go through the same situation.'My wish is that she will get some laws changed,' Winkfield said about her daughter.'I really hope that people learn from this and learn not to pull the plug so fast.' Children's Hospital lawyers had argued that the family did not subject McMath to tests accepted by the American Medical Association to determine brain death.

Originally published on December 27, 2013 Sign up for a free trial of News Direct's animated news graphics at http://newsdirect.nma.com.tw/Reuters.aspx The family of Jahi McMath, a 13-year-old North California girl declared brain dead after suffering complications following a tonsillectomy lost their bid to extend a court order that would have allowed her to remain on life support at least until December 30. The family said they had not yet decided whether to dispute the medical findings or appeal the judge's decision. According to Reuters, Jahi was admitted to the Children's Hospital and Resource Center in Oakland on December 9 for surgery to remove her tonsils. She was declared brain dead three days later following complications from the operation. The surgery was aimed to treat Jahi's sleep apnea, but she began bleeding extensively after the surgery, which then led to a heart attack and brain swelling. Brain death occurs when brain stem function is permanently lost. The brain stem is the lower part of the brain that is connected to the spinal cord. It is responsible for regulating the most essential functions of the body including breathing, heartbeat, blood pressure and swallowing. Brain death can be caused when blood and oxygen supply to the brain is stopped as a result of heart attack. The important difference between brain death and a severe vegetative state is that a patient in a vegetative state still has a functioning brain stem, which allows them to show some form of consciousness. For example, a patient in a severe vegetative state may open their eyes as signs of wakefulness, though have no response to their surroundings and can still breathe unaided. Brain death can only be confirmed after conducting a series of tests, including tests to determine whether or not the patient's pupils are reactive to bright light, whether there is corneal reflex or spontaneous eye movement. Ice-cold water is inserted into each ear to further stimulate eye movements. The trachea is stimulated to see if it provokes gagging or coughing. The ventilator is withdrawn from the patient to see if they make any attempt to breathe on their own. If a patient fails to respond to all of the tests, a diagnosis of brain death is concluded.

In the heartbreaking picture above, parents, Francesca and Lee, are kissing their sweet baby girl, Bella, goodbye. Moments later, the tears were flowing as the 18-month-old was removed from life support. But then, the entire room witnessed an incredible miracle. And those tears quickly turned to tears of joy! The trouble started for little Bella several months before this picture was taken, when her hair began falling out in large clumps. Over the next few months, her health declined as doctors tried to figure out what exactly was wrong. Once admitted to intensive care, an MRI revealed abnormalities across Bella’s brain and the poor girl was in critical condition. Doctors told Francesca and Lee there was nothing more to be done for their baby girl. The heartbroken couple took prints of their little girl’s feet and hands for mementos, took their last full family picture, signed a “Do Not Resuscitate” order, and tearfully said their final goodbyes. With heavy hearts, the family watched as the doctors removed Bella from the ventilators. Her mom told The Mirror, “I just kept sitting there thinking ‘why us’. It was heart wrenching. I will never, ever forget that moment where I had to say goodbye to my daughter.” But as the saying goes, God is seldom early, but never late. He is always on time! Just moments after the ventilators were turned off, the unthinkable happened. “I was holding her hand knowing there was going to be a little last breath,” her dad told The Mirror. “I could feel her hand dropping and it went down but then she started gripping my finger. She started moving on her own and then her machine started going off.”
