Noir Portrait - OnSet ep. 09
http://www.adorama.com The Wikipedia entry for Film noir is “…a cinematic term used primarily to describe stylish Hollywood crime dramas, particularly those that emphasize cynical attitudes and sexual motivations.” Hollywood’s classical Film Noir period is generally regarded as extending from the early 1940s to the late 1950s, however it often depicted scenes from just after the great depression of 1929–1933. Daniel Norton shows us how to get that glamorous effect on digital photography. Top 10 Most Beautiful Movies of All Time
Filmmaking is a complicated alchemy of light, sound, camera movement. And while a great look is always the goal, sometimes everything comes together to create a work of sublime beauty. These are our picks for the Top 10 Most Beautiful Films of all Time. Subscribe: http://goo.gl/9AGRm What did you think of the list? Did we leave off one of your personal favorites? Have you seen all these movies, or have we inspired you to check some of them out? What do you think is the most beautiful film of all time? Let us know in the comments! THE LIST Russian Ark (2002) It’s a single, uncut steadicam shot going through the Russian Heritage museum. Sure, the concept is maybe a gimmick. But it’s amazing. Manhattan (2014) Woody Allen’s love letter to his favorite city in black and white ultra whidescreen is every bit as impactful as Allen’s own memory of the city as a child. Citzen Kane (1941) There may be nothing more emblematic of how to make a beautiful movie that Citizen Kane. 2001: A Space Odyssey This entire film is a ballet of heavenly bodies, with carefully composed shots. The Conformist (1970) This is, in our opinion, the very best of Vittorio Storaro’s work. And that’s saying something. The Fall Tarsem Singh made a beautiful painting of a film; Colin Watkinson spend 4 years and thousands of miles bringing a child’s imagination to life on screen. Hero (2002) This film, which tells the same story from several different perspectives, (and color coded to match), takes a simple concept both in plot and style, and brings it to the next level. Lawrence of Arabia (1962) 70mm film, and every frame of it a still image worthy of framing. The Tree of Life (2011) The most beautiful of Terrance Malick’s films, and there’s quite a bit of competition there. Samsara (2011) There's no plot, or dialogue in this film, but it tells a story nonetheless - every image tells its own story, and it's glorious.

Photo Deconstruction: Low Key Beauty Photography
Join me in exploring my new "Photo Deconstruction" series where I select one of my photographs and share the elements that work together to bring that shot to life. I share inspiration, lighting, behind the scenes images, before/after post-processing and more. In this video I deconstruct a low key, graphic beauty image of my beautiful friend and model Mari. I wanted to create an image of predominantly darker tones with just a subtle shine on her skin and an emphasis on her striking profile. I desaturated the skin to make a nearly monochromatic image with the white flowers for a stark contrast in tones. This image was created with three strobes; a beauty dish with a grid as a main light, a beauty dish with a grid as a fill light, and a 20 degree grid on the background (to create separation). Classic Hollywood Pin Ups – Beautiful and Sexy Portrait Photos of 60 Famous Actresses from Hollywood
America’s entrance into World War II back in 1941 triggered the golden age of pinups, pictures of smiling women in a range of clothing-challenged situations. The racy photos adorned lonely servicemen’s lockers, the walls of barracks, and even the sides of planes. For the first time in its history, the US military unofficially sanctioned this kind of art: pinup pictures, magazines and calendars were shipped and distributed among the troops, often at government expense, in order to ‘raise morale’ and remind the young men what they were fighting for. The heyday of the pinup was the 1940s and 50s, but pinup art is still around.

Louis Sidoli - Most Wanted
I created the series of portraits using vintage mug-shots of the "Most Wanted" iconic figures from contemporary culture, including gangsters, rock legends and Hollywood film stars. I prefer the vintage images to more recent ones, because today the shots are taken with digital cameras and linked to a database record, so the accused no longer has to hold a card whilst the photo is taken. The original snaps were usually taken with instamatic or Polaroid cameras by unknown cops or clerks who handled the booking photograph at the time of arrest. Many of the original photos are very poor quality, but this gives the portraits a raw and authentic feel. Unlike some mug-shots where the subjects look dishevelled, the subjects of these images look cool, despite the fact they were taken quickly, without a team of lighting, make-up artists and photographers behind them. The subjects I have chosen are either my personal favourites or simply because they are great images. Each image has a story behind it. But the real appeal of these images is that "Everybody loves a bad boy"
