But there's one area of art and design the institute has often overlooked: fashion. Now MoMA is determined to show how fashion's influence goes far beyond the catwalks and pages of Vogue. American Marketing Association New York, Brilliance in Marketing: MoMA--Is Fashion Modern?

02:02
The American Marketing Association visited the Museum of Modern Art's new exhibition of iconic fashion that includes over a hundred well-known brands. Is fashion art? See what brands DO belong in a museum... Transcript: Is fashion modern? Are brands art? The Museum of Modern Art aims to answer those questions in a new exhibition of garments and accessories, and the American Marketing Association New York is here to share some of the iconic designs in this much-anticipated show, that is wall-to-wall with well-known brands. It's been over 70 years since the MoMA’s last foray into fashion. Past curators just didn't consider it art. A walk through this newly opened and ground-breaking exhibit, however, suggests they were wrong. The exhibition takes up the entire 6th floor of the building on West 53rd. Move over Picasso and Van Gogh, and make space for Dockers khakis, Lululemon yoga pants, Snuglis and fanny packs. But that is not to say the exhibition is not without standards of cool like Ray Bans, Levis, a Prada backpack, and Calvin Klein briefs. Speaking of underwear, what about the life-changing WonderBra and Spanx. And shoes! There are plenty of them on exhibit, from the commonplace flipflop to the anti-establishment Doc Martens. And you've got Converse All Stars and Nikes, Tevas, and Moon boots. The MoMA presents each item within a context that includes function, style, technology, and cultural identity. From the luxury of the Hermes Birkin Bag to working-class Woolrich flannel shirt, from the fun of Lily Pulitzer to the politics of Colin Kapernick, the show is expansive, both historic and up-to-the-minute. The 111 pieces in the exhibit were culled from hundreds of potential items; selected for the strength of design, pioneering use of materials, and cultural impact. It is impossible to tell the story of design without talking about fashion. Some brands do belong in a museum. And that's brilliance in marketing.

ITEMS Music Video Night with Upscale Vandal @ MoMA

19:55
Music Video Night is our live monthly showcase that celebrates the creatives behind the visuals. For the past year and a half, we've featured directors in L.A., Miami and NYC - from the pioneers to the new breed. In conjunction with MoMA’s exhibit, Items: Is Fashion Modern?, our latest installment explored streetwear culture as illustrated through a series of music videos. As a leading authority on brand development, our featured guest Upscale Vandal spoke about his personal connection to the fashion world and what he learned from working with Pharrell, Jay-Z, J Balvin, Santigold, Big Sean & Pusha T. He also discussed how Cam'ron got his own Pantone color, why Pusha T was criticized in the Italian press and how Pharrell changed the landscape of modern fashion. Music Video Night co-founder, Gregg Kaysen, led the conversation in partnership with MoMA Teens. Introduction to FASHION AS DESIGN

03:30
Why do we wear what we wear, how is it made, and what does it mean? In this new online course from MoMA, "Fashion as Design," we will explore a selection of garments from around the world—ranging from Kente cloth to jeans to 3D-printed dresses. Each week will begin with a conversation between the course instructors—Paola Antonelli, Michelle Fisher, and Stephanie Kramer—to introduce the themes, items, and questions that we will explore. Sign-up: http://mo.ma/fashionasdesign In a series of short films, you’ll hear directly from a range of designers, makers, historians, and others working with clothing every day—and, in some cases, reinventing it for the future. Stories by Martin de Thurah

02:05
A young woman walks the streets of Berlin clad in multiple white T-shirts in filmmaker Martin de Thurah's new short film, "Stories," produced by Google Arts and Culture on the occasion of the exhibition, "Items: Is Fashion Modern?" at the Museum of Modern Art, and and as part of We Wear Culture (g.co/wewearculture). Michelle Millar Fisher, curatorial assistant, MoMA, describes the film as "a subtle, non-didactic reminder to consider our relationship to the wearing and discarding of clothing, as well as a dreamy, enigmatic choreography that reminds us of the many layers of the white T-shirt's history." Take a closer look at the history of the white T-shirt in this editorial feature: http://bit.ly/2yAy7bv "Items: Is Fashion Modern?" explores the present, past—and sometimes the future—of 111 items of clothing and accessories that have had a strong impact on the world in the 20th and 21st centuries—and continue to hold currency today. Driven first and foremost by objects, not designers, the exhibition considers the many relationships between fashion and functionality, culture, aesthetics, politics, labor, identity, economy, and technology. Curator Paola Antonelli on Fighting Insecurity in the Workplace

03:20
“I don’t think that ambition is different between men and women,” says Paola Antonelli, senior curator of the department of architecture and design at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. “I think opportunities are different between men and women.” Her words ring true even in the art world, where, despite the large proportion of women working in the field, men still overwhelmingly dominate the top posts. But Antonelli has earned a reputation for being one of the most influential curators working today—and a game-changer in expanding the canon of design. At MoMA, she has curated innovative exhibitions unpacking design’s relationship to violence and the history of iconic items of clothing that have shaped the way we live. Under her direction, the museum acquired video games, the @ symbol, and emojis for its collection—each decision sparking both praise and controversy within and beyond the art world. She also leads the museum’s research and development program, a think tank and incubator that brings together leaders in the arts, design, and tech worlds to explore urgent issues and groundbreaking initiatives in their fields. Her leadership has driven a vital conversation around the role of museums, and the accessibility of their collections. Where does her boldness come from? “The realization that I want to be influential,” she says. “What’s life about, after all, if you cannot really do something of influence?” Director Chiara Clemente Director of Photography Shane Sigler Editor Antonio Sanchez Composer Peter M. Plain White Tshirt will be exhibited at major museum

00:46
Often, fashion exhibits feature the work of specific visionary designers, or a few costumes from a major film. But the Museum of Modern Art in New York plans to put together a collection that will feature one display with a plain white cotton tshirt, Levi's classic 501 jeans, and a $15 digital watch. The curators at MoMA emphasize that the exhibit is designed to show functional fashion during the last century, and will be called "Items: Is Fashion Modern?". The 99 works in the collection will be examples of clothing design that have had an impact on how people dress today. The exhibit is scheduled to open in December 2017. http://www.gq.com/story/moma-is-fashion-modern-exhibit-2017 http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Paola Antonelli: Walk the walk

21:16
MoMA curator Paola Antonelli takes on the "good girls" of design by complicating commonly accepted notions of what design is and does in the modern world. With exhibitions on video games, violence, and the beautiful lethality of everyday objects, Antonelli shows us the primary job of the curator is to provoke, not comfort.

MODERN NOMAD - FASHION EXHIBITION 2017

16:20
WARNING: SOME PARTS CONTAIN MILD NUDITY -------------------------------------------------------------------------- MODERN NOMAD by CHRIS KARDEVALL Modern Nomad exhibition represents a 27 year long personal journey that is divided into four stages, the first being a stage of neutrality, the second of chaos and doubt, the third of self-acceptance and finally of celebration. These stages are integrated through the several layers of transparency of the materials used, where the more opaque layers hint on a state of cover up, a chameleon constantly fitting in, and the more explicitly transparent layers a non-apologetic way of self-expression. The pockets and bags incorporated in the collection shows the need to preserve our memories by carrying special items and trinkets that we have collected and cherished, a sort of instinct, much like nomads carrying only the necessary items to survive.
