Fast Forward to 2003 I bought a Samsung Yepp MP3 Player and I was blown away by it, and it changed the way I thought about Samsung products. Then it seemed like all of a sudden, for me at least, by 2010 Sony was not the flagship company they used to be and Samsung was the Flagship company for almost all things electronics. This is the story about the how Samsung replaced Sony as the King of the electronics industry. It’s a story about leadership and it begins with Sony’s founders Masaru Ibuka and Akio Morita. Ibuka and Morita were engineers who met as researchers for Japan’s Navy Wartime Research Committee during WWII. After the war, Morita saw an article about Ibuka’s plans for a business venture and he reached out to Ibuka to join the business. In 1946, Morita and Ibuka founded the Tokyo Telecommunication Engineering Corporation on a rented floor of a department store. The company’s technology was limited in the beginning but Morita and Ibuka had a wonderous vision for the company, which was to contribute to society by providing new products to consumers that were based on liberal, open corporate culture. To compliment this vision, Morita and Ibuka centered the company around brilliant founding principles of Freedom and Open-mindedness that in time was in-grained in the corporation’s culture leading them to produce so many ground-breaking products for the next 50 years. Samsung was founded before Sony in 1938 by Lee Byung-Chul as a small export business selling fruits, vegetables, and dried fish. Eventually, Samsung branched out into a variety of industries, such as insurance, securities, and retail. Samsung Electronics was established in 1969 and humbly started producing home appliance parts for Sanyo Electric Company. Then, without the technology to produce colored TVs, they started producing black and white TVs in 1970 which were outdated by then. Samsung eventually produced colored TVs by 1976 and also began to produce a diverse array of products, such as microwaves, washing machines, and refrigerators. On top of that, they established vertical integration by manufacturing components in-house. In 1980, Samsung acquired the government-owned telecom equipment maker Korea Telecommunications Corporation and started developing switchboards, telephone, and fax manufacturing systems. For a long time, Samsung products lacked the technology to produce expensive and more profitable products and the Samsung brand was perceived as cheap and low-quality. Three factors led to why Sony declined so quickly in the digital age. First, when Idei became President, Sony had a lot of debt and was in poor financial shape due to major acquisitions in music and movies along with expansion overseas and Idei had that looming over him and he made decisions shift to focus on short-term profit. Second, Ohga put off identifying his successor until he was close to his mandatory age, and by the time he selected Idei, he did not have time to mentor him. Under the leadership of Lee, Samsung’s strategy to dominate the electronics industry came from two tactics, Aggressive Investment and Speed. This strategy originated from the company’s approach to their DRAM business. When Samsung entered the DRAM market in the 1980’s they were 5 years behind their competitors in technology. In efforts to close the gap, Samsung completed its first production facility is just 6 months, a project that usually took two to three years. Samsung managers and engineers simultaneously managed the design, plans, and construction of the facility, sleeping at an on-site barracks, only going home once a week to change clothes. Today, Sony is led by its new President Kenichiro Yoshida and under his direction, the company is doubling down on content as they recently made a $2 Billion acquisition of EMI Music Publishing. Sony is now the largest music publishing company in the world with an insane library of 4.3 million songs and growing.

I freakin’ love science, and you probably freakin’ love science too – science brought us computers which then brought us youtube, and science brought us sugar that has no calories, and science brought us Neil Degrasse Tyson! But science has a big problem. It’s broken. Science thinks it’s kind of a big deal because of it’s academic journals and books and stuff. But whilst that used to work in the good old days when only certain people could publish stuff, in today’s digital world, anyone can publish stuff. DO you have a paper you want published in the National journal of biological sciences? You can, because I own that journal. I just went online to Hover and registered NatJBS and now i have a journal that sounds totally legit. SO you can see the problem here. There are more journals than ever before, spawning at a frightening rate! These online Journals don’t have a readership so they’ve done away with things like peer review, and even reading the papers it publishes, and just publish anything. the way they make their money is by charging a publication fee. Now you might ask, who would pay actual real money to get their paper published in a shit journal when they could just get it published in a legit paper for free? Well here’s the point, scientists need to get published in order to get promoted, and since it it’s really, really hard to get a paper published, publishing in these journals for the low low price of $799 seems like an awesome idea. Thats how a paper he original paper titled “Get me off your f—–g mailing list.” was accepted in the International Journal of Advanced Computer Technology. Not only did they publish it, but they sent the authors a reviewer report, that had graded the paper as “excellent” which is ridiculous because they claim to be a peer reviewed journal. And right now it’s an act of spectacularly willful denial by the entire scientific community to assume that Science system is still working properly. Now when i pitched this article to my producer Bec, she was like ‘academic journals?” that sounds so boring, why should we care? But the thing is this stuff really matters it means that anti-abortion advocates and gun lobbyists can make up fake data and get it published in legit sounding journals. I cannot tell you how many times people in the comments section have sent me links to this article about gun control - looks like a legitimate article doesn’t it - but it was written by a lawyer for the National Rifle Association (Don Kates) and a Canadian guy who wrote a book called - and I'm not even joking - “Manipulating Public Opinion”. The article was published in the Harvard Journal of Law & Public Policy - which sounds legit, but is actually a student-edited conservative magazine. But people think shitty studies like this are real science, published in real journals, and then they write articles with headings like “Harvard Gun Study: The More Guns, The Less Criminal Activity“ and then we wonder why we can’t get basic gun legislation passed by policy makers. On Richard Branson’s last day at school, his headmaster told him that he would either end up in prison, or become a millionaire. Spoilers! Both predictions would in fact, come true. As of January 2018, Richard Branson enjoys a net worth of 5.1 billion Dollars. Branson’s a big character and so too is his story. Too big to fit into a short video. So let’s cut to the chase. How did he create his fortune? Well, Richard Branson did it the old-fashioned way—hard work, super effective branding, and empire building. Easy right? A lot of entrepreneurs today build a business with an exit strategy in mind—to sell it for big returns before moving onto another venture… …not so with Branson. His one big sale (of Virgin Records in 1992 for one billion dollars) left him in tears, and aching to return to the music business— which he eventually did in 1996 with his new record label V2. Branson instead, diversified, added on industry after unrelated industry to the Virgin brand. From music records to airlines to finance to trains… to publishing… the Virgin empire grows in an extensive, but successful manner, just like its founder. So where did it all begin? At the age of 16, his first business venture was a magazine called Student Here’s a Fun Fact: the business operated out of a church crypt for some time during its early days. Everyone worked fast to avoid being the last to leave at night! Student Magazine advertised and sold the most popular records at the time via mail order. Noticing how well that aspect of the business was doing, Branson and his team, decided to focus their efforts on mail-order records by 1970… One of Branson's first employees suggested that because they were all new at business… why not use the name "Virgin"? It stuck. The mail order business suffered because of a major postal strike in the UK. So, In 1971, the first Virgin Record Shop (complete with listening booths and beanbag chairs for customer comfort) opened in London. Unfortunately, his businesses were still not making money Branson had an idea: he would sell records in Virgin stores, which had been declared export stock, thus saving 33% VAT. A Virgin at business… and a Virgin at crime! Branson was soon caught by UK customs and arrested for not paying duties on vanloads of records. He spent a night in jail, before his parents posted bail. He avoided going to court by agreeing to pay a fine, plus any duties owed. “Incentives come in all shapes and sizes,” admitted Branson, “but avoiding prison was the most persuasive incentive I’ve ever had.” The music label Virgin Records was founded in 1972, and when his first artist Mike Oldfield sold over 5 million copies of "Tubular Bells”, Branson became a millionaire for the first time. You see? Both predictions came true! The record company would go on to sign iconic acts such as the Sex Pistols, and Virgin Group would grow into an equally well-known brand, comprising investments in over 400 companies. Knighted in 2000, Sir Richard Branson, is regarded as one of the world's "Fun" billionaires. His world record-breaking attempts are well known and documented. In 1985 he had to be rescued by the British Royal Air Force when his boat capsized in an Atlantic Ocean record attempt. However, some of his Other feats have been more successful. In 1991 Branson crossed the Pacific from Japan to Arctic Canada, with a record breaking speed of 245 miles per hour. A big fan of reading (like many other successful billionaires such as Warren Buffet and Elon Musk) he founded Virgin Comics in 2006, saying that it will give "a whole generation of young, creative thinkers a voice" With this launch, he brought back “Dan Dare: Pilot of the Future.” Branson himself is keen to follow in the footsteps of this 1950s space hero with Virgin Galactic— a spaceflight company. The ultimate aim is to provide suborbital launches for space science missions and spaceflights for fare paying space tourists. Branson himself hopes to be on one of the first flights. Biofuels for jet aircraft is another of his passions. Virgin has been exploring different methods using sugar cane and algae to develop aviation fuel. Branson is aware that any breakthrough which provides a viable, cheaper fuel would be a goldmine, both commercially and for the planet. Branson is a complex character, full of contradictions. A maverick willing to buck the law, turned respected businessman. A man who projects a social conscience, yet lives as a tax exile on Necker island (ironically in the British Virgin Islands). A former climate change sceptic, turned environmentalist and bio fuel investor. A business epitaph for Branson could well be one of his most famous quotes: You don't learn to walk by following rules. You learn by doing, and by falling over.

The Art Institute of Pittsburgh Online Division Photography Department Introduction and Q/A Session with Professor Melanie Fiander Based out of Portland, Maine, Nathan Eldridge is a freelance portrait photographer who has an uncanny ability to explore his subjects visually.  Eldridge’s clientele revolve around advertising agencies, major publishing companies, magazines and corporations. Regardless of if he is photographing a celebrity, such as Richard Russo, or an organic farmer, Eldridge uses the same creative and critical eye to make a successful photograph. Eldridge’s images have appeared in several gallery shoes such as the “Figures / Context Group Show” at the Photo Place Gallery, which was curated by Cig Harvey. In 2012, Eldridge published a book titled Portraits of the Public, featuring portraits taken of those he met on the street between the years of 2003 – 2011. The “Good Idea Grant”, which was awarded to Eldridge in 2011 by the Maine Arts Commission, funded this book. Eldridge’s work has been featured in several publications such as Ladies home Journal, Down East Magazine, and Yankee Magazine. With the fastest average internet connection speed and the best rate of internet access in the world, according to an Akamai report in 2nd quarter of 2010, South Korea is poised to be a world superpower of the internet. In contrast to its IT infrastructure, digital contents business is still in its infancy. It is generally recognized that while Korean consumers are very techy, they are also very picky and, when it comes to paying for digital content, very stingy. Meanwhile, i-PHONE entered to the Korean Market in 2009, two years after its first appearance. Belatedly, it boosted Korean Smart phone market and made a great sensation. The total number of Smart phone users in South Korea is closing on seven million, which flaunts an unprecedented and unrivaled rate of growth. Also, Social networks such as Twitter and Facebook usage soared in the last year. Followed by the huge success of Smart phone, a new game changer i-PAD was launched recently in November. Major local news media groups have competitively released i-PAD applications and have met favorable responses so far. Besides major news media, magazine contents are doing poorly in app stores.A few magazine applications are available so far, but they are not much better than simple PDF scanning applications with free. Because developing digital magazine requires considerable investment and risk, the majority of Korean magazine companies cannot afford to do that. Under those circumstances, GQ KOREA set to unveil its first digital magazine for i-PAD on App store in early January. A free version of GQ KOREA Digital magazine will be first released on January to give a digital experience to i-PAD users. Paid versions will be launched on March 2011 in time for its 10th anniversary in Korea. In terms of design and engagement, it is overwhelming enough in Korean I-PAD contents market. The additions do contain various interactions and all the contents are resigned and optimized for I-pad including sounds and video clips. More contents and functions such as SNS, Scraping articles will complement the paid version on March 2011. Launching of interactive digital magazine will be experimental and have industrial significance in Korean market. It would be the first attempt, in Korea, to republish digital magazine in its own name making contents valuable. GQ Korea believe they can charge stingy Korea readers for valuable content on the GQ iPad magazine. That is the only way to turn digital publishing into a long term business model. As for a new venture in digital publishing in Korea, the attention is focused on its success or not.
