This means we no longer have to use multiple statements for performing Insert, Update and Delete. With merge statement we require 2 tables 1. Source Table - Contains the changes that needs to be applied to the target table 2. Target Table - The table that require changes (Inserts, Updates and Deletes) The merge statement joins the target table to the source table by using a common column in both the tables. Based on how the rows match up as a result of the join, we can then perform insert, update, and delete on the target table. Merge statement syntax MERGE [TARGET] AS T USING [SOURCE] AS S ON [JOIN_CONDITIONS] WHEN MATCHED THEN [UPDATE STATEMENT] WHEN NOT MATCHED BY TARGET THEN [INSERT STATEMENT] WHEN NOT MATCHED BY SOURCE THEN [DELETE STATEMENT] Example 1 : In the example below, INSERT, UPDATE and DELETE are all performed in one statement 1. When matching rows are found, StudentTarget table is UPDATED (i.e WHEN MATCHED) 2. When the rows are present in StudentSource table but not in StudentTarget table those rows are INSERTED into StudentTarget table (i.e WHEN NOT MATCHED BY TARGET) 3. When the rows are present in StudentTarget table but not in StudentSource table those rows are DELETED from StudentTarget table (i.e WHEN NOT MATCHED BY SOURCE) Create table StudentSource ( ID int primary key, Name nvarchar(20) ) GO Insert into StudentSource values (1, 'Mike') Insert into StudentSource values (2, 'Sara') GO Create table StudentTarget ( ID int primary key, Name nvarchar(20) ) GO Insert into StudentTarget values (1, 'Mike M') Insert into StudentTarget values (3, 'John') GO MERGE INTO StudentTarget AS T USING StudentSource AS S ON T.ID = S.ID WHEN MATCHED THEN UPDATE SET T.NAME = S.NAME WHEN NOT MATCHED BY TARGET THEN INSERT (ID, NAME) VALUES(S.ID, S.NAME) WHEN NOT MATCHED BY SOURCE THEN DELETE; Please Note : Merge statement should end with a semicolon, otherwise you would get an error stating - A MERGE statement must be terminated by a semi-colon (;) In real time we mostly perform INSERTS and UPDATES. The rows that are present in target table but not in source table are usually not deleted from the target table. Example 2 : In the example below, only INSERT and UPDATE is performed. We are not deleting the rows that are present in the target table but not in the source table. We want to retrieve all the matching rows between Department and Employee tables. This can be very easily achieved using an Inner Join as shown below. Select D.DepartmentName, E.Name, E.Gender, E.Salary from Department D Inner Join Employee E On D.Id = E.DepartmentId Now if we want to retrieve all the matching rows between Department and Employee tables + the non-matching rows from the LEFT table (Department) This can be very easily achieved using a Left Join as shown below. Select D.DepartmentName, E.Name, E.Gender, E.Salary from Department D Left Join Employee E On D.Id = E.DepartmentId Now let's assume we do not have access to the Employee table. Instead we have access to the following Table Valued function, that returns all employees belonging to a department by Department Id. Create function fn_GetEmployeesByDepartmentId(@DepartmentId int) Returns Table as Return ( Select Id, Name, Gender, Salary, DepartmentId from Employee where DepartmentId = @DepartmentId ) Go The following query returns the employees of the department with Id =1. Select * from fn_GetEmployeesByDepartmentId(1) Now if you try to perform an Inner or Left join between Department table and fn_GetEmployeesByDepartmentId() function you will get an error. Select D.DepartmentName, E.Name, E.Gender, E.Salary from Department D Inner Join fn_GetEmployeesByDepartmentId(D.Id) E On D.Id = E.DepartmentId If you execute the above query you will get the following error Msg 4104, Level 16, State 1, Line 3 The multi-part identifier "D.Id" could not be bound. This is where we use Cross Apply and Outer Apply operators. Cross Apply is semantically equivalent to Inner Join and Outer Apply is semantically equivalent to Left Outer Join. Just like Inner Join, Cross Apply retrieves only the matching rows from the Department table and fn_GetEmployeesByDepartmentId() table valued function. Select D.DepartmentName, E.Name, E.Gender, E.Salary from Department D Cross Apply fn_GetEmployeesByDepartmentId(D.Id) E Just like Left Outer Join, Outer Apply retrieves all matching rows from the Department table and fn_GetEmployeesByDepartmentId() table valued function + non-matching rows from the left table (Department) Select D.DepartmentName, E.Name, E.Gender, E.Salary from Department D Outer Apply fn_GetEmployeesByDepartmentId(D.Id) E How does Cross Apply and Outer Apply work The APPLY operator introduced in SQL Server 2005, is used to join a table to a table-valued function. The Table Valued Function on the right hand side of the APPLY operator gets called for each row from the left (also called outer table) table. Cross Apply returns only matching rows (semantically equivalent to Inner Join) Outer Apply returns matching + non-matching rows (semantically equivalent to Left Outer Join). The unmatched columns of the table valued function will be set to NULL. The five major types of joins that are discussed on this video include: • Inner join: Inner joins are possibly the most common type of joins. The resulting data set is obtained by combining two tables on a common column. Each row of the left table is compared against each row of the right table. All matching rows are returned as part of the result set. An equijoin is an inner join that uses only equality comparisons in the join predicate. • Left outer joins: Left outer joins return all of the rows from the left table even if there is no matching row in the right table. It also returns matching rows from the right table. Rows in the right table that do not match are not included as part of the result set. • Right outer joins: Right outer joins return all of the rows from the right table even if there is no matching row in the left table. It also returns the matching rows from the left table. • Full outer joins: Full outer join returns all rows from both tables where there is a match and returns NULL for rows that do not have a match. • Cross joins: Cross join returns the Cartesian product of rows from tables in the join. The resulting data set consists of a combination of each row in the left table with each row in the right table. Two tables, each with five rows, will produce a resulting data set that contains twenty-five rows. How to Resolve Oracle SQL Parent Key Not Found (ORA-02291)

In this video, we’ll explain what the ORA-02291 “parent key not found” error is, see an example, and look at how to resolve it. This error usually happens when we try to insert data into a table. It looks like this: Error is: ORA-02291: integrity constraint (constraint_name) violated - parent key not found So what does this error mean? It means we’re trying to insert data into a child table, and there is no related record in the parent table. If a foreign key has been set up to enforce this relationship, there needs to be a parent to insert a child that refers to it. Write a SQL script to insert data into StudentCourses table. Here are the rules that your script should follow. 1. There will be 2 inputs for the script Student Name - The name of the student who wants to enroll into a course Course Name - The name of the course the student wants to enroll into 2. If the student is already in the Students table, then use that existing Student Id. If the student is not already in the Students table, then a row for that student must be inserted into the Students table, and use that new student id. 3. Along the same lines, if the course is already in the Courses table, then use that existing Course Id. If the course is not already in the Courses table, then a row for that course must be inserted into the Courses table, and use that new course id. 4. There should be no duplicate student course enrollments, i.e a given student must not be enrolled in the same course twice. For example, Tom must not be enrolled in C# course twice. Answer : To avoid duplicate student course enrollments create a composite primary key on StudentId and CourseId columns in StudentCourses table. With this composite primary key in place, if someone tries to enroll the same student in the same course again we get violation of primary key constraint error. ID column in Departments table is not the primary Key and DepartmentId column in Employees table is not the foreign key. But we can still join these tables using ID column from Departments table and DepartmentId column from Employees table, as both the columns involved in the join have same data type i.e int. Select Employees.Name as EmployeeName, Departments.Name as DepartmentName from Employees join Departments on Departments.ID = Employees.DepartmentId The obious next question is, if primary foreign key relation is not mandatory for 2 tables to be joined then what is the use of these keys? Primary key enforces uniqueness of values over one or more columns. Since ID is not a primary key in Departments table, 2 or more departments may end up having same ID value, which makes it impossible to distinguish between them based on the ID column value. Foreign key enforces referential integrity. Without foreign key constraint on DepartmentId column in Employees table, it is possible to insert a row into Employees table with a value for DepartmentId column that does not exist in Departments table. The following insert statement, successfully inserts a new Employee into Employees table whose DepartmentId is 100. But we don't have a department with ID = 100 in Departments table. This means this employee row is an orphan row, and the referential integrity is lost as result Insert into Employees values (8, 'Mary', 'Female', 80000, 100) If we have had a foreign key constraint on DepartmentId column in Employees table, the following insert statement would have failed with the following error. Msg 547, Level 16, State 0, Line 1 The INSERT statement conflicted with the FOREIGN KEY constraint. The conflict occurred in database "Sample", table "dbo.Departments", column 'ID'.

See how to build a working XML query/response system with SQL database accessing using NIEM ULEXS schema and dictionary. Using the CAM toolkit we demonstrate quickly building everything needed. Taking the existing ULEX-SR schema, first ingest it then clean it up by removing unnecessary parts. Next adapt it by adding vehicle search results details from LEXS v4.0 dictionary components via drag and drop visual design. Validate the structure components for consistency with the NIEM NDR and build and view your data models, then export your XSD schema and JAXB bindings. Then switch to the SQL viewer and pick and map your SQL table components into the vehicle search results XML structure. Save and run live with SQL data to verify desired results output. Next add a parameter filter to select only the requested data record based on license ID number. Then validate the XML content using the CAMV engine. Document your completed XML exchange, and package the NIEM IEPD artifacts.
