How to draw [Random product] design in 4 steps | Industrial Design Sketching

15:17
++DOWNLOAD THE FREE SKETCHING GUIDES FOR BEGINNER: http://bit.ly/thedesignerstarterkityt ++Subscribe to the channel and get even more sketching tutorials at the blog http://www.thedesignsketchbook.com ++Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheDesignSKetchbook Awesome music from http://www.bensound.com Today we’ll look at a 4 steps tutorial that will help you better draw in 3D. It’s a perfect training for whom face the Malediction of the Blank page, where you may face these challenges: ◾Can’t visualize any shape in 3d on a 2D paper ◾Or just no inspiration ◾So you feel paralysed. Note: I recommend you to watch the video about the Contour lines first – if you don’t know how to draw them. http://thedesignsketchbook.com/tip-10... The idea here is to create [Random products] without caring much about the real functions of the prodcut. However you will combine hardware details to give it a look of a product. This exercise allow you to train without complexing about the feasibility, and focus on researching new shapes. Observe hardware that surround you, identify the details and “Drag & Drop” these elements to your sketches: ◾Industrial: Screw, joints, cables, grooves… ◾Functional: Power cords, button, tab, icons… ◾Commercial: Logo, barcode, product specification, illustration… Random product sketches - Step by StepThe 4 steps of the [Random product] Step 1 Draw random shapes. Fill your paper of few random shapes. Step 2 Draw the contour lines Even if these shapes are flat, play with the contour lines to give them a 3D volume appearance. Try to represent it with the minimum of lines. Step 3 Draw more contour lines To give more definition to your shapes, add more contour lines. Step 4 Add details You don’t care much about the “real” functions, you just try to assemble different details together to make your shape looks like a product. Details will bring life to your shape. Assignment of the day: Take few objects such as phone, mp3 players, mouse, camera, kitchenware… observe them and practice the “Random product” challenge. If you can do that, the day you need to create a product from a brief, your might visualise better some shapes without putting your pen on paper yet. There will be side benefits to this training: ◾You will improve your quality of lines ◾Improve your vision in 3D ◾Get more familiar to the Happy accident (create new shapes randomly) ◾Put in practice your memory of forms ◾And let your ideas flow faster. Have fun ! And let me know how it goes. :)

DOWNLOAD THE DESIGNER STARTER KIT: http://bit.ly/thedesignerstarterkityt MORE ON THE BLOG: http://www.thedesignsketchbook.com/how-to-multiply-your-ideas-with-the-random-product-technique/ Today, may I share with you How we can train our brain to think faster at getting ideas? As a beginner, we often face the blank page. We just start a project that our mind suddenly seams so empty we could hear the crickets. :P It is sometime source of stress or impatience. But don’t worry it’s normal. Getting ideas can be trained. Let me share you a technique I personally like as it gives us a lot freedom. If you are new at Photoshop, feel free to get introduced to Photoshop brushes here: http://www.thedesignsketchbook.com/tip-98-video-how-to-make-your-first-sketches-on-photoshop-interface-and-brush-introduction/ Explore ideas like how you could do with a Brainstorming. It’s somehow like a “Visual brainstorming” though. Most innovations come from idea association. That’s what we are going to work on. This exercise use the Random product technique we saw in a previous article. The trick here is to keep drawing having your pen always in movement as well as you ideas will flow in your mind. (As usual do not use any eraser as it will stop your flow of ideas). Before starting, gather few inspiration pictures you like. Keep them in front of you, and spot some interesting details before starting to sketch for a couple of minutes. Then start ! From there you associate, dissociate, transform, extract the elements and import them in your sketches. Do not remain on only one sketch, do a few or as many as you can. Anytime, feel free to go back to a previous one or even combine the sketches you have done together. It’s really free ! For now the products you will draw may not make sense for the real world application – as you will more or less gather the elements randomly. But as soon as your brain will be more used to this “flow of ideas routine”, you will be even more prepared the day you have to follow guidelines. That’s how you will rise your chances to add in unexpected touch to the project. :) As a Bonus, I added a quick tutorial about Digital rendering with Photoshop. Let me know if it’s something that interest you. If you are, let me know in the comments, so I will do some more.
product design rendering and sketching by product tank

06:31
This is a product design sketching and rendering tutorial that I've put together for industrial design students. Sketching is something that I know I should do more of, but we're all busy people, so I've picked up a few drawing and rendering tips along the way to make things faster and look better especially for those of us who know we are not as good as we should be. I would like to thank Ben Davies from Rodd Industrial Design for teaching me most of this stuff, it was a long time ago, but - credit where its due. In this video I set out how product design presentation sheets used to be created using pen and marker techniques, which is making a come back at the moment. I then look at the common mistakes we all make from time to time and how to a few simple things will vastly improve the look of your presentation sheets. Finally I focus on how to make a very professional looking product design presentation sheet in a short space of time using Photoshop and then show that even if you prefer to use drawing programs or apps on your tablet or computer, the process is very much the same. I hope you enjoy the video and if interested in seeing more, hit subscribe, because more good stuff is on its way.

DOWNLOAD THE DESIGNER STARTER KIT: http://www.thedesignsketchbook.com/sign-up-and-receive-the-ebook-the-designer-starter-kit/ http://www.theDesignSketchbook.com https://www.facebook.com/TheDesignSKetchbook --- We all know about Brainstorming. I was thinking about making a “Doodle-Storm”. Try, and send me yours ! 00:26 I am sketching on Sketchbook Pro 00:32 Many Designers love that software 00:37 It’s light, and reproduce a natural feel of a pencil 00:47 Sketch your first lines with a light pressure 00:54 Then, bold the lines with more confidence 01:10 Vary the size of your sketches 01:50 Fill the blank space of sketches 02:14 Train your vision, drawing in multiple views 02:28 Press Ctrl-Z (Undo) to explore different lines 02:34 Add a hint of colour 02:40 To direct the viewer eye through the board 03:01 Music from Bensound.com, India It’s a real pleasure to get absorbed by the “Doodle-Storm” session – Drawing some free form of an Earphone. I didn’t give myself a time limit (I had the whole night in front of me). However, my aim was filling the full canvas of Sketchbook Pro before I get sleepy. To avoid distraction (Facebook, Twitter, Emails…), I plug some earphone in my ears and watch a movie while drawing. I realized that I could get more productive and creative that way as I link pleasure of drawing with the pleasure at watching a comedy. I invite you to take a pen, traditional or digital and make a try ! It’s fun. Let me know in the comment how it goes and send me your artworks at [email protected] :)

Sketchbook Pro | How to draw Bottles using the Symmetry axis | Industrial design sketching

12:54
DOWNLOAD THE DESIGNER STARTER KIT: http://bit.ly/thedesignerstarterkityt Today we explore a powerful technique of How to draw bottles. I believe it’s powerful because you can use the same method to draw anything that is using a “Revolution”. In other words, anything that the profile turn in 360 degrees around a vertical axis. You may think of pottery. This tutorial is using the software Sketchbook Pro, where we activate the tool: Vertical symmetry axis. Download Sketchbook Pro trial. How to draw a bottle in video – using Sketchbook Pro and the symmetry axis Regular view point We tend to draw things from how we see them in real life. However, when you want to draw something, always ask yourself from which viewpoint you want to show it. Front view point for presentation boards for clients Today we are interested to get a front view viewpoint. It’s easy to multiple the proposals and show to your project to your client for him to make a selection. Draw anything like a Bottle of water, Soya sauce Kikkoman, bottle of perfume and so on. ASSIGNMENT OF THE DAY: Observe all the things that use a “Revolution” similar to pottery. Take note of them and try to draw them on Sketchbook Pro. You can start with a dozen such as a glass, a flower pot, a base ball bat, a Pantone Tria marker, an ice cream cone… 🙂 BONUS that is not in the video: It’s just fun to see how the packaging of the bottle can reflect the personality and the body shape of the buyer. eg. For a sports brand of bottle such as Gatorade, the bottle is definitely sporty with a narrow waist. A bottle of soda is more massive, cheap tasty and big…. Hope it helps and see ya for the next tutorial ! And feel free to leave a comment or question.

Rendering - Students of Product Design Episode 04

13:19
In Episode 4 of students of Product Design, I'm mainly looking at using photo editing software to render hand drawn design sketches to make my product design presentation sheets look more professional. Having photographed a sketch and imported it into Photoshop, I cover a simple set of techniques that I use for all my presentation sheets, laying down a base colour, an effect when necessary, shadows and highlights. To understand the idea behind this, I look at materials and the different properties they have, how they react to light and easy ways to look at this and apply what you see to your presentation sheets. The most important message in this video is that most of the time I don't know what's right, but over the years I have developed a good eye for what's wrong with my presentation sheets, a bad perspective, the wrong colour etc, so all I do is keep making my sketches less wrong and each time I do this they creep closer to being right. This is all I do when designing a product, I keep tweaking each part of the design until it's as good as I can make it. At the end of the video I look at how to develop a brand language that can be applied to other products as a company diversifies its product range and expands in to other markets. Lots of industrial designers cleverly use colour, form, texture, materials and a logo to strengthen a brand and reinforce its values with consumers. The example I create is a bit tongue in cheek and very cheesy, but hopefully shows the basics of how it's done. I hope you enjoyed Students of Product Design episode 4. If you have any questions, let me know - I do try to answer everyone who asks a question, but sometimes it's not possible if the question is asked through Google Hangouts etc. PT www.producttank.co.uk

Fast professional Photoshop rendering for Product Design

36:16
A quick freestyle photoshop rendering of a drill sketch. I cover a bunch of stuff and explain my approach to this kind of piece - working fast and keeping everything nice and simple to create something that still looks slick and professional. The techniques sped through in this video are applicable to a wide range of rendering styles, but it's still very strong: clean up your sketch, flood fill a layer with 50% grey then use a range of brushes, dynamically changing the size and hardness of those brushes, and switching between painting light and dark with a low opacity to build up the tone density. Then masking it out and using hue and saturation adjustment layers to control the different colours, in combination with adjustment layer masks. EASY. Have a look at the video, do try it yourself, and let me know in the comments how you go. If you want to know when I upload new videos then please crash your cursor into the subscribe button and blast the clicker until you are fully subscribed. Like / share / etc. As ever, hit me up in the comments if there's anything you want me to cover in a future video. See you guys in the next video, or if you are one of my students, next time I'm in, and you can show me your pimpin sketches. How to make your sketches more real - Industrial design sketching

11:33
DOWNLOAD THE DESIGNER STARTER KIT: http://bit.ly/thedesignerstarterkityt Improve your sketches with this simple sketching TIP! Software: Sketchbook Pro More tutorials at http://www.thedesignsketchbook.com How to make your sketches more real - Industrial design sketching Full article on the blog. When you start learning how to sketch, you study and practice basic rules drawing line of perpective, line of geometry and simple shapes such as square, circles… and so on. We are going to see something that will change your daily habit when you draw. At the end of the video you will know how to make you simple shape become more real. In other words, how you will transform a geometric shape to an object. At the end of the video, you will see a small demo with a touch screen phone. Recipe from basic shape to more realistic sketch Recipe to draw from geometric shape to a more realistic object. This simple technique will push you to the next level ! – Feel free to add some line weight below the object to give it more weight. (It’s like a dark and thin shadow below the rounded edges) Same logic here. Can you feel the difference ? Reminder: Draw the full ellipses for the sphere contour line. Or your sphere may appear flat. For the sphere, it’s already all rounded. So how to add more rounded edges ?? You simply can’t. But we can play with a bit of lighting and the contour lines. I bold a bit the edges of the contour lines, especially below the “ball”. Make sure your contour lines goes inside the hole to understand it. Play with your angle of contour lines to decide of the roundness. You don’t have to be perfect in your drawing. Make sure your perspective is fine and that your main shape is there. Then, everything will be alright. That’s all for today ! Pretty easy right ? So now it’s the time to take a pen and practice ! Let me know about your sketches in the comments, or let me a question if you have any.
