Earlier models were rounder and louder, often suffering from the phenomenon of "tunnel boom," where deafening compressed air would rush out of a tunnel after a train rushed in. But a moment of inspiration from engineer and birdwatcher Eiji Nakatsu led the system to be redesigned based on the aerodynamics of three species of birds. Nakatsu’s case is a fascinating example of biomimicry, the design movement pioneered by biologist and writer Janine Benyus. She's a co-founder of the Biomimicry Institute, a non-profit encouraging creators to discover how big challenges in design, engineering, and sustainability have often already been solved through 3.8 billion years of evolution on earth. Which is the Best Sunscreen in the Indian Market? Summer is round the corner and in this season the one cream that should be a part of your daily cosmetic kit is a sunscreen. Sun is the source of energy on this planet, however prolonged exposure to the UV rays of the sun may lead to sunburn, fast ageing and in some cases even skin cancer. So applying a sunscreen on a daily basis becomes extremely important. However, it is shocking that most commercial sunscreens in the market are full of toxic chemicals like oxybenzone, parabens, mineral oil, BHT and many others which not only harm the skin but also completely block the absorption of the Vitamin D in the body, of which the sun is a major source. So, what choice do we have? Obviously, we want to protect ourselves from the harmful radiations of the sun but at the same time we don’t want a toxic sunscreen to damage our skin. In search of the best sunscreen in the Indian market I picked up almost 15 sunscreens, some from the supermarket while others online. After an in-depth analysis, I have sorted out all these sunscreens into 3 categories on the basis of number of toxic chemicals present in them. 01:42 - CATEGORY #1 - These sunscreen creams have 10 or more toxic chemicals in them. Many of these chemicals have been known to interfere with the thyroid gland. Some of these chemicals have the capacity to cross the skin and get into other tissues in the body. Basically, they are the worst in the market. 02:33 - CATEGORY #2 - These sunscreens claim to be non cosmetic and Ayurvedic but it does not mention the complete list of ingredients. However, they do contain some harmful chemicals. 03:33 - What is Sun Protection Factor (SPF) number really means? 04:35 - CATEGORY #3 - Sunscreens by these brands have nothing to hide as they have mentioned the complete list of ingredients. Oru Mohiuddin, Beauty and Personal Care Industry Analyst, states that fragrance manufacturers are trying to restore brand value to products by launching exclusive products. Brands attempting this are: J'adore Michael Kors Since the recession, revenue for the fragrance industry is down, which means less money to spend on marketing. This impacted what types of fragrances were recently launched - many were celebrity launches or limited editions. Companies have recently been investing in successful brands as well rather than marketing new brands. An example of this tactic is LVMH and the Chérie L'eau brand. Brand extensions and new brands have not been as popular - an example of this is the J'lo brand by Coty and it's extensions, which have declined year on year. Some industry insiders are blaming slow sales on the sheer number of celebrity launches and brand extensions, which they believe are over saturating the market and taking the luxury out of buying a fragrance. Globalization of fragrances is another industry trend. The fastest growing markets for fragrances are: Russia China Fragrance companies are also trying to diversify their product ranges, delving into color cosmetics and skin care. One of the more recent strategies used by the industry is tapping into technology by using mobile phone applications. You hate them. You are searching for some great entertainment and you have to sit though some interrupting ad. You can’t seem to skip them fast enough. 5,4,3,2,1 Skip!!! And if you happen to be one of those businesses running ads that do not have a skip button prepare to be hated by the masses. Your knowing interrupting people’s me time. Here is what YouTube/Google say about their Instream Pre roll ads. “Pre-roll ads deliver your message to your ideal audience, in a classic TV-like format that makes planning easy. You can reach millions of engaged viewers as they watch video content from approved and established YouTube partners and on leading sites in the Google Display Network.” Google is great at selling stuff, but we are smarter than the average consumer. (Note, every time I implement something that Google suggests, my cost per lead tends to increase. Imagine that…Google being evil.) We can’t be fooled by their well-designed pdfs and we know most of the info that Google provides is pushing us to spend more money on their platform. 98% of the time our Pre-roll ads do not get delivered to our ideal audience and average view rates are well below the 1% range, but that does not have to be you. Youtube gets 1 billions unique visitors and reaches more US adults ages 18-34 than any cable network. It’s huge and we can use it to our advantage. Look at it this way How much do you think it would cost to run a Commercial on a cable network? A lot. You can’t walk into a Cable network and tell them to run 10 dollars in ads and see if you get any kind of result. It does work that way But With YouTube you basically choose where you want your ads show, how much you are willing to pay, and who you want to see those ads. You can’t do that anywhere else. With that being said… you can’t just go out there and press start on a YouTube campaign. We need to be strategic. First thing first I love Pre-Roll Ads.. (I also have a love hate relationship with Google)☺ Let me repeat Pre-Roll YouTube ads are awesome and we have found that the cost per lead is almost 5 times less than other avenues. 1. When creating Pre-roll ads you need to design your video for a YouTube setting. (they are not commercials.) “Think about what we know at that moment: we know what they're going to watch, we know what they just Googled, we know where they are, we know what device they are watching on, heck, we know they can skip the ad. All of this information is an opportunity to customize a message that respects the viewer and the platform.” It’s not easy and it definitely takes a lot of creativity to make it work, but that is what Ydraw is for. Here is a great example of an ad created for Pre-roll. This Pre-roll ads is extremely clever notice how they use the skip button and recognize the fact that you are going to be watching this video on YouTube. I am really surprised that big companies do not take this approach more often. Take Geico for example they come up with some amazing TV commercial…really weird and creative. Yet they do not take the time to create a create YouTube campaign that interacts with the audience. Can you imagine if they took the Geico lizard and had him interact with the audience some way. People want interactive ads. They want you to at least acknowledge that they are there to watch a video and you are interrupting them. 2. Select the right target audience. Big corporation spend millions of dollars throwing their ads in front of every YouTube video on the web. Don’t ask me why, but it is all in the name of “Branding.” Most can’t afford to throw money away so make sure to limit your audience. Step 3: Examine four-square numbers Don't be fooled by the dealer's four-square information -- a worksheet the dealer will present you with when you sit down to negotiate that maps out purchase price, down payment, monthly payment, and trade-in value. Doing your own math prevents them from fudging numbers. Determine the interest rate and loan term before you arrive at the dealership to accurately project your monthly payments. The analysis on how much money we're spending to generate the traffic and here's what's crazy, most people don't realize this, we generate, let's say a million visitors a month on Neil Patel. Do you know what the cost to get there is with video, production, podcasting, blogging, promotion, ads, link building? $110,000 a month. That's what it averaged out to for 2017. Here are my marketing strategies for 2018. I just bought a blog in the marketing space for a half a million bucks. They get a million visitors a month, and it's cheaper to spend money acquiring people who already have the traffic. So in 2017, I bought Uber Suggest, I think it was around 140 grand. They had very little traffic. I 381 redirected the site, traffic increased and guess what happened? Nothing. I hoped that my traffic would go through the roof, but nothing happened. Uber Suggest was a good acquisition and what I ended up learning from that is, who cares about links? Don't buy anything for the links. Buy it purely based off of traffic and just pay a simple metric. If Uber Suggest has roughly 200,000 visitors per month, I paid a hundred and something; I would have paid 200 grand, the money didn't matter. For a blog that I just spent half a million on, their traffic ranges. On a horrible month, they'll get around 800,000 uniques. In a perfect month, they'll get around, like, 1.2, 1.3 million uniques, and all I'm doing right now is buying as many blogs as possible. My marketing strategy for 2018 is to buy blogs based on of traffic. I look at the top posts that they have and how qualified their visitors are and determine if I can successfully monetize their content. I don't even care if they have revenue. If they don't have revenue, even better. The problem with Search Engine Journal is that they have conferences, they have advertising, and they have contracts for all of it. I don't care for any of that. I just want the traffic. So when you buy all these people for traffic and then you put it into your monetization flow, you can quickly figure out, what is this worth? If I can't make my money back in less than 12 months, I will not buy it. The other marketing strategy that I use when I'm buying these sites is to look for blogs that aren't monetized well. The blog that I ended up buying for half a million bucks, they're not even making three grand a month. If you're not even making three grand a month, that's a good deal, right? They're like; you're going to give me half a million dollars for this? No problem. Another creative marketing strategy I'm doing right now, is trying to buy a really popular marketing tool. I don't want to pay them all the money they're asking for because they want well into the millions, and it isn't worth it. But, I'm trying to work out a deal where I give them X amount of money up front, let's say a million dollars, and then give them a hundred thousand a month over X amount of months or a hundred thousand a year over X amount of years. When I see inefficiencies in sites, I figure I can purchase them and double the revenue because they aren't optimized for traffic or conversions. So buy it for what it's worth, optimize it, and then use the profits to pay them out continually. That way you're not using all of your money and the business is paying, you may have spent a bit more money, but personally, you don't have to spend as much money, and that's my marketing strategy for 2018. My goal is to spend at least $5 million acquiring businesses purely based on their traffic. In The Undriveables, Britain's worst learner drivers are paired with the country's best instructors to see if they can finally get their license - but they'll only have five frantic days to get test-ready. Episode one follows mum Keeley, who has already failed the test nine times, as she battles to control her panic on the road, and retired teacher Malcolm whose terrible coordination means he struggles to avoid steering into parked cars. With the help of the country's best driving instructors, some of Britain's worst learners attempt to pass their test. For some, driving remains an impossible dream. Try as they might, they just cannot pass their test. In the UK, every year 17,000 people sit their test for the seventh time and there are learners out there who have failed more than twenty times! Now in an entertaining and feel-good new format for ITV, these poor Undriveables are thrown a lifeline: they will be paired with some of Britains top driving instructors, who each want to prove that they can succeed where other instructors have failed. Each episode of The Undriveables will follow the progress of two different learners whose L-plates have become permanent fixtures, who have had countless lessons and failed tests multiple times. Each will be coached by a different, expert instructor, who is sure they can get their learner successfully through their test. These instructors are drawn from the top brand of the nations driving instructors, and each have their own approach from harsh discipline, to being a learners best friend. But will their confidence evaporate as they realise the size of the challenge ahead? The wannabe driver and their instructor are thrown together side by side on Britains busy roads, finding themselves in high-pressure scenarios which range from the hilarious to the heart-stopping. In-car cameras capture the extreme emotions as the Undriveables face their fears and attempt to conquer their driving demons. Each episode moves towards its climax with the anxious wait of the instructors while their pupils sit the test. Will they finally master the road and get their license? An OTDR injects a series of optical pulses into the fiber under test. It also extracts, from the same end of the fiber, light that is scattered (Rayleigh backscatter) or reflected back from points along the fiber. (This is equivalent to the way that an electronic time-domain reflectometer measures reflections caused by changes in the impedance of the cable under test.) The strength of the return pulses is measured and integrated as a function of time, and is plotted as a function of fiber length. An OTDR may be used for estimating the fiber's length and overall attenuation, including splice and mated-connector losses. It may also be used to locate faults, such as breaks, and to measure optical return loss. To measure the attenuation of multiple fibers, it is advisable to test from each end and then average the results, however this considerable extra work is contrary to the common claim that testing can be performed from only one end of the fiber. In addition to required specialized optics and electronics, OTDRs have significant computing ability and a graphical display, so they may provide significant test automation. However, proper instrument operation and interpretation of an OTDR trace still requires special technical training and experience. OTDRs are commonly used to characterize the loss and length of fibers as they go from initial manufacture, through to cabling, warehousing while wound on a drum, installation and then splicing. The last application of installation testing is more challenging, since this can be over extremely long distances, or multiple splices spaced at short distances, or fibers with different optical characteristics joined together. OTDR test results are often carefully stored in case of later fiber failure or warranty claims. Fiber failures can be very expensive, both in terms of the direct cost of repair, and consequential loss of service. OTDRs are also commonly used for fault finding on installed systems. In this case, reference to the installation OTDR trace is very useful, to determine where changes have occurred. Use of an OTDR for fault finding may require an experienced operator who is able to correctly judge the appropriate instrument settings to locate a problem accurately. This is particularly so in cases involving long distance, closely spaced splices or connectors, or PONs. OTDRs are available with a variety of fiber types and wavelengths, to match common applications. In general, OTDR testing at longer wavelengths, such as 1550 nm or 1625 nm, can be used to identify fiber attenuation caused by fiber problems, as opposed to the more common splice or connector losses. The optical dynamic range of an OTDR is limited by a combination of optical pulse output power, optical pulse width, input sensitivity, and signal integration time. Higher optical pulse output power, and better input sensitivity, combine directly to improve measuring range, and are usually fixed features of a particular instrument. However optical pulse width and signal integration time are user adjustable, and require trade-offs which make them application specific.
