Our oceans are under dire threat. Overfishing, pollution and climate change are decimating the Earth’s most precious natural resource. And if the oceans perish, so do we. To add to this quagmire, the open ocean is a lawless place. Under the U.N. World Charter for Nature, it isn’t up to one country or entity to protect our seas, it’s everyone’s responsibility. That’s where Sea Shepherd comes in. This diverse crew of volunteers from around the world literally put their lives on the line to enforce international conservation law against the illegal fishing industry. Sea Shepherd Crew Save Humpback Whale Entangled in Illegal Gillnet

05:23
Sea Shepherd crew rescued a whale entangled in an illegal totoaba gillnet in the Gulf of California. Sea Shepherd currently has two vessels in Mexico's Gulf of California on OPERATION MILAGRO. Our goal is to save the vaquita porpoises, the most endangered marine mammal. The vaquita are caught as a result of fishing the totoaba, a fish poached for its swim bladder. Both the vaquita and the totoaba are endangered species and protected by law. Both species live only in the Gulf of California. read more at: https://seashepherd.org/news/sea-shepherd-crew-save-humpback-whale-entangled-in-illegal-gillnet/

Miracles happen: Sea Shepherd Crew saves a Smalltail Shark

01:29
Milagro means Miracle in Spanish. Sea Shepherd named Operation Milagro this way because a Miracle was needed to save the vaquita porpoise. It has been 4 years and there is still hope. Sea Shepherd will not give up. Over the past 4 years we have seen many Miracles, we saved a whale and so many lives. Sharks are hard to save. Most species need a constant flow of water through their gills to breath. These Men and Women selflessly spend weeks and months away from their families, sometimes in the most remote places on Earth to protect our environment and every species on our planet equally. Ship Sinking - Sea Shepherd Rescues Crew of Sinking Vessel

01:53
Not often we get to see a ship sinking ..... Sea Shepherd, the Australian conservation group that has been chasing an illegal fishing ship through the world's oceans for almost four months, rescued the crew of that very ship Monday morning after the vessel sank "in suspicious circumstances" off the African island nation of Sao Tome and Principe, the group said. At approximately 1539 AEDT, at location 0˚ 20’ North 05˚ 24' East inside the Exclusive Economic Zone of Sao Tome, the poaching vessel, Thunder, issued a distress signal. The Captain of the Thunder radio the Sea Shepherd ship, Bob Barker, reporting that the vessel was sinking. The Sea Shepherd ship, Bob Barker, immediately answered the distress call. 35 crewmembers from the Thunder have abandoned the ship and are in life rafts. Sea Shepherd confirms that the Thunder appears to be taking on water. The Bob Barker is currently coordinating a search and rescue operation. Captain Peter Hammarstedt of the Bob Barker said, “We have received a distress call from the Thunder. It appears as though the ship and crew are in a serious situation. The Captain of the Thunder has radioed us and said their ship is sinking. We have launched our small boat and are doing everything we can to assist."

Marine Harvest Harassing Scientists and Sea Shepherd Crew

01:13
MARINE HARVEST HARASSING SCIENTISTS AND SEA SHEPHERD This boat has been following us for days as we patrol the waters of British Columbia for #OpVirusHunter. On Monday, July 16, salmon farming mega-company Marine Harvest will be in court in an effort to prevent scientists and First Nations leaders from gaining access to the public waters surrounding their farms. They are going to great lengths to keep their industry shrouded in secrecy. What exactly are they trying to hide? There is so much scientific evidence of the effects open-net salmon farms have on the wild that California, Oregon, Alaska and Washington State made the practice illegal in their waters, as they do not want to risk their wildlife further. British Columbia is the only place left in the North Pacific denying the facts. Learn more: seashepherd.org/virushunter #SeaShepherd #Canada #Salmon

Sea Shepherd - Seal Defense Campaign - 2005 Crew Arrested

01:11
Sea Shepherd - Seal Defense Campaign - 2005 Farley Mowat Footage 2005 Seal Defense Campaign. Sea Shepherd crew are assulted, arrested, dragged, fined and jailed. In 2005 eleven Sea Shepherd crew were arrested after being attacked and assaulted by sealers on the ice. Despite being struck by sealing clubs, punched and kicked, not one sealer was arrested for assault. The attack was video-taped and the sealers identified yet the Royal Canadian Mounted Police stated there was insufficient evidence to charge the sealers. The Sea Shepherd crew were jailed and fined for approaching within a half a nautical mile of a seal being killed. In addition to the hazards of thick ice and nasty weather, the Sea Shepherd crew face the threat of violence from the sealers and the threat of arrest under the Canadian Seal Protection regulations that make it a criminal offense to witness or document the killing of a seal without the permission of the government of Canada. Canada's commercial seal "hunt" is the largest mass slaughter of marine mammals in the world. This year, Canada will allow 270,000 harp seals to be killed. Canada's 2006 quota for killing seals: 325,000 for the regular commercial "hunt" and an additional 10,000 harp seal allowance for new aboriginal initiatives, personal use, and Arctic hunts. As usual, the commercial quota was exceeded, resulting in over 330,000 seals being kiilled. During the previous three years, the government of Canada delivered the death sentence to over one million baby harp seals. Sea Shepherd continues to oppose this annual obscenity called a "hunt." It is not a hunt because the sealers simply walk up to the seals (who have no means of escaping or hiding) and bash the seals on the head or shoot them. Sea Shepherd, known for direct action, has and continues to use other methods to fight to bring the "hunt" to a permanent end. In 2005, Sea Shepherd joined many other organizations in promoting the international boycott of Canadian seafood products as a means to strip the commercial seal "hunt" of all economic value and force it, by financial means, to end. The Boycott of Canadian Seafood targets the very people who slaughter the seals: It is the fishing industry that runs the seal "hunt" which is a make-work project for off-season fisherman. SHOTS FIRED AT SEA SHEPHERD'S M/V SHARPIE

01:01
On the night of April 10th, 2018, SHOTS WERE FIRED AT SEA SHEPHERD'S The M/V Sharpie Operation Milagro IV 31 27.31 N 114 45.63 W At 7:46 pm on the night of April 10th, while retrieving an illegal gillnet approximately 8 nautical miles off the Baja Coast near San Felipe, BCS, shots were fired at the Sea Shepherd vessel M/V SHARPIE from a fast-approaching skiff. The M/V Sharpie was stationary at the time while the crew worked on deck. Piracy Protocols were initiated and the crew lay flat on deck. At this time, Mexican Federal Police Officers posted on board the Sea Shepherd vessel returned 3 shots to deter the approaching skiff. At 7:53 pm, the Fast Naval Patrol vessel in the area was informed and in less than 10 minutes was underway to support the M/V Sharpie. Net retrieval operations were stopped and the crew mustered below deck in the mess room. At 8:05 pm a second skiff closed in on the M/V Sharpie at high speed. The M/V Sharpie proceeded south towards San Felipe and arrived at San Felipe Harbour at 11:10pm to process 13 totoabas recovered from illegal nets that had been left on deck during the melee. Sea Shepherd would like to thank the Mexican Navy and the Mexican Federal Police for their prompt and professional action to maintain order in the Upper Gulf of California. Sea Shepherd is currently conducting Operation Milagro IV, an anti-poaching and illegal net retrieval campaign in the Upper Sea of Cortez to protect the Vaquita Marina and Totoaba Bass, in partnership with the Government of Mexico. Sea Shepherd carries five armed law enforcement agents on board its vessels to ensure safety and order while patrolling the waters of the Upper Gulf of California Vaquita Refuge, a Federally Protected and UNESCO listed Area.

Operation Migaloo - 2007/08 - Sea Shepherd Whale Defense

06:28
Antarctic Whale Defense Campaign Operation Migaloo 07-08 Odyssey For The Whales: 20,000 Miles, 68 Crew Members, And 83 Days At Sea For The Whales In The Southern Ocean Sea Shepherds fourth expedition to the remote southern waters off the coast of Antarctica . Japan is targeting endangered whales in the Antarctic Whale Sanctuary and Sea Shepherd will not stand by while whales die. With our ship, the Steve Irwin and a dedicated crew of 41 international volunteers, the Whales' Navy, under the command of founder and president, Captain Paul Watson, will uphold and enforce international conservation regulations on the high seas against the Japanese whaling fleet's self imposed quota of 935 piked whales, 50 endangered humpback whales and 50 endangered fin whales in the Southern Oceans. The campaign is named in honor of Migaloo, the only known albino humpback in the world. This year, with the sights of the ruthless Japanese harpooners set square on the endangered humpbacks, Migaloo and all of his family are under imminent threat of death at the hands of Japanese pirate whalers. As the relentless Japanese whalers seek to hunt down and kill Migaloo and his family, Sea Shepherd will be hunting the whalers with the firm objective of intervention against their illegal activities. "I did not establish the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society as a protest organization," said Captain Watson. "I have not gone to sea over all these years to simply bear witness to the atrocities that whalers continue to inflict upon the most gentle and intelligent beings in the seas. We are sea cops—operating legally under the guidelines of the United Nation's World Charter for Nature, which allow for the enforcement of international conservation law by non-governmental organizations in international jurisdictions." For more than three decades, Sea Shepherd has been at the forefront of the whale wars, defending the gentle giants wherever and whenever we can. Sea Shepherd has tackled overwhelming odds with insufficient resources, won many victories, and saved the lives of thousands of whales. In 2005--2006, we harried the Japanese fleet enough to ensure they went home 83 whales short of their self-appointed quota. In the 2006--2007 Operation Leviathan campaign they were over 500 whales short of their illegal quota. The Sea Shepherds have returned to the Antarctic this year with a ship to match their speed, new equipment for intervention, and an international crew of dedicated volunteers willing to spend the holidays in at the bottom of the earth in a historic voyage to save whales. It was an epic voyage and an extremely effective campaign. We accomplished more than we thought we would, engaged in numerous confrontations with the Japanese whalers, and exposed the issue of illegal Japanese whaling to the entire world--especially in Japan where for the first time Japanese whaling was a frequent news topic in the media. Sea Shepherd is on a quest to protect the greatest treasure of the seas -- the great whales. "We are obsessed with stopping the Cetacean Death Star, that viciously cruel killing machine otherwise known as the Nisshin Maru , and her ruthless fleet of hunter/killer boats armed with their explosive deadly blunt harpoons," said Watson. "Because I know that if we kill the whales, the sharks, the seals, and the sea turtles, we will destroy the very foundation of life in the oceans—and in so doing, we will destroy humankind. Sea Shepherd - Angry fisherman attack the Farley Mowat

03:16
April 4, 2008 Sea Shepherd Conservation Society's ship, the Farley Mowat, was attacked by a mob of 30-40 angry fishermen. The attack took place while berthed in the French islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon. The Farley Mowat was berthed in St. Pierre to transfer video footage of the Canadian seal slaughter onto shore and await the resumption of the slaughter, which was temporarily suspended after the death of four sealers. Tensions quickly escalated in St. Pierre as the growing mob hurled rocks, threats, and insults at crew members of the Farley Mowat. Cameraman Simeon Houtman was assaulted by an axe-wielding fisherman after stepping onshore to film the incident. "The fisherman raised the axe above his head with one arm and tried to knock Simeon back with his other. Simeon jumped back onto the ship just before the mob threw our gangplank into the water," said Peter Hammarstedt, First Officer of the Farley Mowat. Captain Alex Cornelissen requested assistance from the French police--at least half a dozen of whom were present at the scene--but they did nothing to defend the ship or crew against the mob. Instead, the police suggested that Sea Shepherd should leave St. Pierre immediately. Captain Cornelissen explained to the police that it would take some time to warm the engines in order to leave port safely and avoid serious engine damage. He requested protection during that time, but the police did nothing other than stand by and watch as fishermen hacked at the mooring lines of the Farley Mowat with an axe and ripped the gangplank from the ship, setting it dangerously adrift into the harbor. After the mob severed head and bow-spring lines from the bollards, Sea Shepherd crew members scurried to pull in lines and prevent them from drifting back towards the screw or into the bowthruster. "The mob responded with a rain of stones and rocks that were thrown with the intent to injure," said Hammarstedt. Without engine power, the Farley Mowat drifted uncontrollably in serious danger of crashing into nearby rocks and/or ships in the harbor. Captain Cornelissen had no choice but to start the engines cold--risking irreparable damage--in order to avoid a potentially lethal collision. Although the Farley Mowat was able to escape the hostile crowd at St. Pierre, the extent of engine damage sustained remains undetermined. Fortunately, all crew members were on board during the attack, and no-one was injured. Sea Shepherd Conservation Society http://seashepherd.org/
