CLEAN LINES, OPEN SPACES A VIEW OF MID CENTURY MODERN ARCHITECTURE Full Version

56:18
CLEAN LINES, OPEN SPACES: A VIEW OF MID-CENTURY MODERN ARCHITECTURE international-style architecture; A Utopian Ideal Modern architecture or modernist architecture is a term applied to an overarching movement, with its exact definition and scope varying widely.[1] The term is often applied to modernist movements at the turn of the 20th century, with efforts to reconcile the principles underlying architectural design with rapid technological advancement and the modernization of society. It would take the form of numerous movements, schools of design, and architectural styles, some in tension with one another, and often equally defying such classification.[1] The term Modern architecture may be used to differentiate from Classical architecture following Vitruvian ideals, while it is also applied to various contemporary architecture styles such as Postmodern, High-tech or even New Classical, depending on the context. In art history, the revolutionary and neoclassical styles that evolved around 1800 are also called modern. The concept of modernism is a central theme in the efforts of 20th century modern architecture. Gaining global popularity especially after the Second World War, architectural modernism was adopted by many architects and architectural educators, and continued as a dominant architectural style for institutional and corporate buildings into the 21st century. Modernism eventually generated reactions, most notably Postmodernism which sought to preserve pre-modern elements, while "Neo-modernism" has emerged as a reaction to Post-modernism. Notable architects important to the history and development of the modernist movement include Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier, Walter Gropius, Erich Mendelsohn, Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Sullivan, Gerrit Rietveld, Bruno Taut, Arne Jacobsen, Oscar Niemeyer and Alvar Aalto. Common themes of modern architecture include: the notion that "Form follows function", a dictum originally expressed by Frank Lloyd Wright's early mentor Louis Sullivan, meaning that the result of design should derive directly from its purpose simplicity and clarity of forms and elimination of "unnecessary detail" materials at 90 degrees to each other visual expression of structure (as opposed to the hiding of structural elements) the related concept of "Truth to materials", meaning that the true nature or natural appearance of a material ought to be seen rather than concealed or altered to represent something else use of industrially-produced materials; adoption of the machine aesthetic particularly in International Style modernism, a visual emphasis on horizontal and vertical lines

When Did Modern Architecture Actually Begin? | ARTiculations

Did modern architecture really begin in the 1920s with the founding of the Bauhaus school? Perhaps. But perhaps the changing landscape of architectural practice and theory throughout the last 200 years is not as straight forward as it seems. Bauhaus : A History Of Modern Architecture

14:37
Bauhaus : A History Of Modern Architecture Staatliches Bauhaus (About this sound listen (help·info)), commonly known simply as Bauhaus, was an art school in Germany that combined crafts and the fine arts, and was famous for the approach to design that it publicised and taught. It operated from 1919 to 1933. At that time the German term About this sound Bauhaus (help·info)—literally "construction house"—was understood as meaning "School of Building". The Bauhaus was first founded by Walter Gropius in Weimar. In spite of its name and the fact that its founder was an architect, the Bauhaus, during the first years of existence, did not have an architecture department. Nonetheless, it was founded with the idea of creating a "total" work of art in which all arts, including architecture, would eventually be brought together. The Bauhaus style later became one of the most influential currents in modern design, Modernist architecture and art, design and architectural education. The Bauhaus had a profound influence upon subsequent developments in art, architecture, graphic design, interior design, industrial design, and typography. Dallas Modern Home Selected by AIA

03:54
http://dallasmodernhomes.com/ Architect Graham Greene of Oglesby-Greene designed a contemporary home on an extraordinary site, high on a bluff, overlooking White Rock Creek in the gated community of the Glen Abbey neighborhood. Nature becomes the central design element of this home as the glass walls of windows provide transparency for the meandering streams, waterfalls, koi ponds, and the negative edge pool found in the garden. The distant view is of White Rock Creek and endless treetops in the distance. Engineering and materials are combined to create open, dynamic and intimate spaces. The Dallas Chapter of AIA has chosen the home both for architectural awards and for the location of the patron party for the AIA Modern Home Tour.

Steel + Residential Architecture - An Architect's How-to Guide

07:48
Quintessentially modern, steel is a material born of industrial processes. It’s forged in fire and rolled or drawn into shapes — beams, tubes, wires, angles, plates. Steel is strong, durable, conductive, ductile, machinable and malleable. And while many think of the use of steel in a residential setting as a particularly cold form of modernism, steel can be wonderfully warm and inviting when contrasted with natural materials. In this video I review the essential qualities of steel and how they can be leverage for use in a residential setting. I discuss: 1. Strength - hot vs. cold-rolled 2. Weight - (steel is sold by the pound) 3. Durability (alloys) 4. Appearance 5. Lightness - thickness vs. strength 6. Finishes - brushed, matte, polished 7. Other treatments: blackening, galvanizing, cutting and folding 8. Landscape uses - Corten -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Studio Joy Works (Rick Joy's New Book) - My Review" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZPhhiLaOhg -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

Modern House Design with Large Spans and Slender Beams Architectural Style

11:02
Modern House Design - The design of this functional residence, which emphasized visual connection between living areas, features grand clean modern lines. The integration of most rooms with the living/entertaining areas, enabled the use of ample glazed doors and window openings over large spans; all framed by spectacular surrounding scenery. The search for materials that promoted contrasting balance and yet, defined each element in its totality, has driven the architectural finishes palette. This design fostered large spans and slender beams, which created a structural challenge, given the unrefined capability at the work site. Lengthy meetings with the structural engineer eventually provided the most cost effective solution. Despite accommodating all mechanical services in dedicated plant rooms, the building facades remained uncompromised, giving prominence to high ceilings and cross ventilation into living areas via automated high-level windows. Modern House Design - The use of skylights permitted efficient natural lighting and ventilation to the ensuites, walk-in robes and bedrooms circulation areas. Post-Modern Architecture - 'More is More'

07:54
Post-Modern architecture emerged in the 1970s as a critical reaction to Modernism. In Britain it was closely associated with the economic boom of the 1980s. The style was an important strand of late 20th century architecture, but Post-Modern buildings can be vulnerable to change and loss which is why the best examples have been selected for listing. In this film, three leading architects of the era, Piers Gough, Sir Terry Farrell and John Outram look back on the era and talk about their inspirations. https://HistoricEngland.org.uk/PostModern

Bauhaus, History of Modern Architecture, International Style, Part 2

13:19
In 1919, Architect Walter Gropius was appointed to head a new institution in Germany that would help rebuild the country . Called the Bauhaus (a German expression meaning house for building), the Institution called for a new "rational" social housing for the workers. Bauhaus architects rejected details such as cornices, eaves, and decorative details. They used principles of Classical architecture in their purist form, functional and without ornamentation of any kind. Walter Gropius, Marcel Breuer, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, are some of the Bauhaus leaders who migrated to the United States. The term "International Style" was applied to the American form of Bauhaus architecture. Modern Architecture | Federico Delrosso

09:14
Internationally acclaimed architect Federico Delrosso defines his style though his most personal of works in his hometown of Biella, Italy. Growing up the son of a surveyor, his passion for architecture wasn't immediately apparent, but eventually he found himself back in school whilst simultaneously working in the field. House AF - Completed 2002 His first major project was renovating an old farm house with contemporary designs from a metallic porch addition, all the way down to the furniture. This project represents the genesis of his career. Villa CS - Estimated Completion 2018 The Villa currently under construction is a large-scale project that will see the entire building gutted with only the roof remaining. It will be transformed and renovated including the tennis court and indoor pool. Teca House - Estimated Completion 2018 The small house on the hill on the hill is a protected area with a small building ruin. The design aims to capture the volume of air and respect the heritage of the building it's being built upon. Villa MM - Completed 2011 The horizontal villa is important to federico because it was built on the land he grew up on. Villa RV - Completed 2011 The vertical villa is also special because Federico's father built the previous home for the father of his current client today, making a second generation paring of builder and client. Honoring the past and driving the future, Federico leads a design firm baring his name and servicing clients both in Italy as well as the United States, Istanbul, Switzerland and beyond. Federico is working for the client but also for the architecture. He says "We live space, we live architecture, it belongs to everybody." The Shed Roof - An Architect's Review of a Modern Classic

07:54
In this video I discuss the reasons for choosing a shed roof shape as well as the design implications for doing so. Sheds are structurally simple, site responsive forms that are finely tuned to passive solar collection. With opportunities for daylighting via clerestories, rainwater harvesting and other aesthetic benefits they're a great choice to meld traditional and contemporary design languages. -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Studio Joy Works (Rick Joy's New Book) - My Review" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZPhhiLaOhg -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

Modernist Architecture is a failure

01:57
It would be wise to start using classic styles again, we need to get over our post-WWII fear of classic and ornate things. modern architecture quickly becomes ugly to the general public after its newness wares off, then it just becomes an eyesore (except a few structures). The public has never fallen in love with modern architecture like they were 'supposed' to. The same with much modern art. "Have you ever looked at a bizarre building design and wondered, "What were the architects thinking?" Have you looked at a supposedly "ecological" industrial-looking building, and questioned how it could be truly ecological? Or have you simply felt frustrated by a building that made you uncomfortable, or felt anger when a beautiful old building was razed and replaced with a contemporary eyesore? You might be forgiven for thinking "these architects must be blind!" New research shows that in a real sense, you might actually be right." - Quinlan Terry

Let's Design Cedar Flags Ep.5 - Modern Architecture Style Monsieur Frites Building - Planet Coaster

21:16
Cedar Flags is slowly coming together. This episode is focused on the construction of the modern architecture style building that houses our Monsieur Frites stand. This episode is fairly light in terms of the amount of work done but the level of detail to get this building up and running took nearly 5 hours. In the last video I asked if we should keep the modern styled building that we began in the timelapse. A bunch of you guys said in the comments to stick with it and do some interesting detail work to make it look interesting. So that's what this episode is all about. The building is mostly done out of modern brick but it has accent pieces made out of the art shapes. The art blocks we are using are colored black to match with the trim in the windows. I really like how this aesthetic turned out. The building definitely has a contrast to the building that we worked on in the last episode but it keeps this little coffee plaza interesting. Using a comment from the last episode, we design a small space out back of the building for things like employee rest areas and trash collection. This is the level of realism that I want to continue to work into this series! Contemporary Home Design with Modern Tropical and Minimalist Time Less Architecture Style

10:10
This Contemporary Home Design is known as Malouna villa. It is an exclusive private residential project located on the North Coast of Koh Samui Island in Bang Po, Thailand. Lying on a quiet part of beautiful Laem Noi Beach along Koh Samui’s northern shore, Villa Malouna boasts 45m of pristine beach frontage, with views across to the neighbouring island of Koh Phangan. The 750 sqm GFA are organised around a central garden to provide a feeling of large and open space just after the main entrance. The 7 bedrooms up to 23 beds of Malouna villa are spread around this garden. The project develops a modern tropical and minimalist time less architecture. A combination of ideal location, cutting-edge design, luxurious finishes and a layout designed for easy living, results in a contemporary beach villa with flow and movement that makes the most of Samui’s climate, views and light. The composition is using the contrast of two main materials / colours: white blocks and dark teak timber. Due to its North orientation the ventilation and sun control of the main facades are well managed. The project develops a special attention to the tropical climate and eco-friendly design. The roofs have large overhangs with fixed louvers to protect the façade from the sun. Besides, the main areas provide important oversized opening to minimize the indoor / outdoor barrier, and to offer a natural ventilation with a cross opening. These rooms are designed for indoor-outdoor living, with stack-away doors which completely open up the rooms to the gorgeous island climate. With the living room being open on three sides, the gentle sea breeze cools the space, helped by ceiling fans. The white terrazzo floors throughout the villa are cool under foot. The interior design is also using the contrast. The walls have different white and grey shades painting, combined with a tropical solid timber for the furniture. ============================================ Please other related video about home and interior design : Contemporary House Design Surrounded By Beautiful Vegetation and Landscape in Bandung, Indonesia == https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6O-2EzKMaMg Future House with Beautiful Organic Shape and Wooden Construction == https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPD331Zm66Y Luxury Modern House Design with Long Window and Sense of Levity == https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGanMBCHSKE ============================================== The admin of this channel is not the owner of the material inside the video. What is POSTMODERN ARCHITECTURE? What does POSTMODERN ARCHITECTURE mean?

04:44
What is POSTMODERN ARCHITECTURE? What does POSTMODERN ARCHITECTURE mean? POSTMODERN ARCHITECTURE meaning - POSTMODERN ARCHITECTURE definition - POSTMODERN ARCHITECTURE explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. Postmodern architecture began as an international style the first examples of which are generally cited as being from the 1950s, but did not become a movement until the late 1970s and continues to influence present-day architecture. Postmodernity in architecture is said to be heralded by the return of "wit, ornament and reference" to architecture in response to the formalism of the International Style of modernism. As with many cultural movements, some of Postmodernism's most pronounced and visible ideas can be seen in architecture. The functional and formalized shapes and spaces of the modernist style are replaced by diverse aesthetics: styles collide, form is adopted for its own sake, and new ways of viewing familiar styles and space abound. Perhaps most obviously, architects rediscovered past architectural ornament and forms which had been abstracted by the Modernist architects. Influential early large-scale examples of postmodern architecture are Michael Graves' Portland Building in Portland, Oregon and Philip Johnson's Sony Building (originally AT&T Building) in New York City, which borrows elements and references from the past and reintroduces color and symbolism to architecture. Postmodern architecture has also been described as neo-eclectic, where reference and ornament have returned to the facade, replacing the aggressively unornamented modern styles. This eclecticism is often combined with the use of non-orthogonal angles and unusual surfaces, most famously in the State Gallery of Stuttgart by James Stirling and the Piazza d'Italia by Charles Moore. The Scottish Parliament Building in Edinburgh has also been cited as being of postmodern vogue. Modernist architects may regard postmodern buildings as vulgar, associated with a populist ethic, and sharing the design elements of shopping malls, cluttered with "gew-gaws". Postmodern architects may regard many modern buildings as soulless and bland, overly simplistic and abstract. This contrast was exemplified in the juxtaposition of the "whites" against the "grays," in which the "whites" were seeking to continue (or revive) the modernist tradition of purism and clarity, while the "grays" were embracing a more multifaceted cultural vision, seen in Robert Venturi's statement rejecting the "black or white" world view of modernism in favor of "black and white and sometimes gray." The divergence in opinions comes down to a difference in goals: modernism is rooted in minimal and true use of material as well as absence of ornament, while postmodernism is a rejection of strict rules set by the early modernists and seeks meaning and expression in the use of building techniques, forms, and stylistic references. One building form that typifies the explorations of Postmodernism is the traditional gable roof, in place of the iconic flat roof of modernism. Shedding water away from the center of the building, such a roof form always served a functional purpose in climates with rain and snow, and was a logical way to achieve larger spans with shorter structural members, but it was nevertheless relatively rare in Modernist buildings. (These were, after all, "machines for living," according to LeCorbusier, and machines did not usually have gabled roofs.) However, Postmodernism's own modernist roots appear in some of the noteworthy examples of "reclaimed" roofs. For instance, Robert Venturi's Vanna Venturi House breaks the gable in the middle, denying the functionality of the form, and Philip Johnson's 1001 Fifth Avenue building in Manhattan (not to be confused with Portland's Congress Center, once referred to by the same name) advertises a mansard roof form as an obviously flat, false front. Another alternative to the flat roofs of modernism would exaggerate a traditional roof to call even more attention to it, as when Kallmann McKinnell & Wood's American Academy of Arts and Sciences in Cambridge, Massachusetts, layers three tiers of low hipped roof forms one above another for an emphatic statement of shelter.

America is blessed with a breadth of architectural styles, from early Colonia-era regional styles to modern, sustainable styles that draw influence from myriad sources. Featuring more than three dozen architectural styles through 130+ images, this short video also showcases a number of unique buildings types. The content is drawn from Scott D. Butcher's book, "Historic Architecture of Pennsylvania," which looks at American architecture through the eyes of six south central Pennsylvania communities with almost 300 years of buildings and structures.

Clever Bushman Building King Mansion Modern Architecture Out Of Mud and Straw, Grass

16:25
In this video I would like to show you about how to build a biggest mansion out of mud and straw. This is such a hard work, but if you were trapped in the forest maybe this can be a good idea for you to build a house to live temporary to avoid the fierce wild animal. I would like to apology everybody if you fells inconvenience with cutting down the tree, but the trees that I used are just small and we can use those as fire wood only. I didn’t use any rose wood or special wood to build this mud house. Hope you enjoy this video. If you get some more interesting ideas, please suggest us. We are welcome all constructive feedback. Please help us to get 100K Subscribers. Your motivation is our passion to make more videos. Thanks you very much. Modern House Design with Natural Architecture Style and Beautiful Landscape

10:43
This modern house is known as Natural Architecture Project. It is a project completed by Tim Davies Landscaping. It is located in City Beach, a suburb of Perth, Australia A mature yet architectural backyard was required to soften the ultra-mod lines of this brand new City Beach abode; one that the team from Tim Davies Landscaping (TDL) mastered by sourcing mature plantings, manipulating walkways and highlighting sculptural elements. “The client wanted a mature garden which provided instant impact and softened the minimal, modern architecture of the house and the large outdoor spaces that it created,” TDL landscape designer Tim Davies said. Natural plantings were just as important as the hardscaping in creating form and function for the architectural design. “The sourcing of mature tree and plant species was a major factor in creating the feel of an established garden overnight and clear and constant communication with the client regarding plant species ensured the right selection for each space was made,” Mr Davies said. “The mature olives out the front tying the front elevation into its coastal setting, the established star jasmine creeper alongside the pool and the spectacular mature transplant Poinciana tree in the house’s central courtyard are just a few of the planting elements that ensure the brief was met.” Chindarsi Architects designed the home and chose Bateig Azul Spanish Sandstone from Forezzi Pty Ltd for the exterior flooring. The stone has been manipulated in platform steps leading up to the front entrance, flanked by abstract rendered garden beds for dimension. On the left of the home, a private walkway leads toward the central feature courtyard. It has tiered garden beds and stone slabs enhanced with garden lighting, notably feature light spheres designed and installed by TDL. These are repeated around the entire design for a unique take on illumination. Custom graphite granite bowls and planters are also spotted throughout including one filled with succulents under a sprawling Frangipani and another in the courtyard filled with water and riverstones. The pool was also designed by the architect, bordered by swathes of sandstone and a grassed area, which is topped with a contemporary sculpture designed and built by artist Tim McFarlane Reid. Mr Davies described the landscape as minimal and contemporary; combining high quality finishes with lush, mature planting. ============================================ Please other related video about home and interior design : Rustic House Design with Combination of Elegant Simplicity of Modern Design Principles & Rustic Feel == https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7CtfRsqkRA Modern House Design with Beautiful Architectural Style of Secondary Skin == https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2AAIEH_1FA Modern House Design with Stone, Glass and Wood as Dominated Architectural Design Elements == https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9nxpVMlgr_4 ============================================== The admin of this channel is not the owner of the material inside the video. The Architecture of the Japanese Engawa or Porch

07:47
In this video I discuss the layout of the engawa and offer modern architectural examples that make use of the engawa. The engawa is a uniquely Japanese space, neither completely enclosed or completely open. It's a generous hallway, a roofed transition zone, located between the interior rooms in a Japanese home and the garden, created by extending the interior floor outward. In Japanese culture it has a social importance, providing an informal meeting space, a place for sitting, greeting one’s neighbors and sharing a cup of tea. -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Studio Joy Works (Rick Joy's New Book) - My Review" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZPhhiLaOhg -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-
