Watch more How to Swing Dance videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/507274-Types-of-Swing-Dance-Swing-Dance There are many types of swing done throughout the world. It started here in America, but there are styles happening all over, in Germany, and England, and France, and Brazil, and Australi,a and New Zealand. But the main styles that are done here are styles like East Coast Swing, West Coast Swing, Lindy Hop, North Dallas Push, Houston Whip, Carolina Shag, Collegiate Shag, St. Louis Shag, bop, hand dancing, swingout, just to name a few. Some of you might be thinking, but what about jitterbug. Jitterbug is actually not a specific dance. That's kind of a regional thing. It's one blanket statement for all fast styles of swing. So when you hear someone say jitterbug, it's going to look different in Washington, D.C., than somebody who does jitterbug in Portland, Oregon. The three main styles done are West Coast Swing, East Coast Swing and Lindy Hop throughout the United States an all over the world. The three we're going to be focusing on in this Howcast series is East Coast Swing, West Coast Swing and Lindy Hop. Let's get up and swing dance.

Basic Elements of Swing Dancing | Swing Dance
Watch more How to Swing Dance videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/507276-Basic-Elements-of-Swing-Dancing-Swing-Dance The best way to learn any dance is to practice the elements that make up that dance, much like practicing your scales on a piano. If you learn to read music and you learn your scales, you can play any song put in front of you. Same type of thing when it comes to the different styles of swing. If you understand some basic swing elements you can put them together a lot like Legos to make up the different style of swing. Some of those elements are walking, touch-stepping, triple stepping, and kick-ball-changes. Let's just do that in place. Just walk in place. Doesn't matter what foot you start with, just walk. Feel what that walking rhythm feels like. Now we want to make sure we're over our feet, not back here marching behind our feet, right? We're dancing over our feet, right? So there's walking. Then there's touch-stepping. Touch, step, touch, step. When get comfortable touch-stepping don't just do it underneath you. Touch to the side, touch forward and back. Get comfortable just moving around. And then of course we have our triple steps as well. Triple step underneath you, right? Triple step going sideways. I would even triple step going forward and back. Right? Just getting comfortable with what that rhythm feels like. Then we have our kick-ball-change. Kick, ball (it's the ball of the foot), change. From the side that goes kick, ball change, kick, ball change. You can even do it with both feet. Kick, ball change, kick, ball change. Again, kick, ball change, kick, ball change. If you don't pick the foot up it's touch-ball-change. Touch, ball change, touch, ball change, as opposed to a kick-ball-change. Some movement, just looks a little bit different because I'm not picking the foot up. So we're going to go ahead and take those elements and put them to music. You want to practice them a lot so that you can draw upon them as necessary when you're doing the different varieties of swing. We're going to do it to music right now. There you have all of your elements that make up swing dancing.

How to Do East Coast Swing | Swing Dance
Watch more How to Swing Dance videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/507282-How-to-Do-East-Coast-Swing-Swing-Dance East Coast Swing, one of the first styles of swing taught at ballroom studios here in America. What we're going to start off with is your triple steps. I'm going to start left, Nicola is going to start right. We're going to go step, together, step, then to the other side, step, together, step. From there we're going to take what's called the rock step. I go back with my left, she goes back with her right, and we go rock, step. So it literally is just a rock back and forward. Rock, step. We're going to go step, together, step, step, together, step, rock, step. It can travel a lot or a little bit. If we travel it a lot, step together, step it really moves to the side. Step together, step, and then we rock, step. Rock, step. Or you can kind of keep it in place. Step together, step, step together, step, rock, step. For the hold you want to make sure that your right hand is underneath the lady's left arm. Her left arm is on top slightly down of the man's right arm. I take my left and she presents her right right on top of it like that and we have step together, step, step together, step, rock, step. Or we can call it triple step, triple step, rock, step. Triple step, triple step, rock, step, triple step, triple step, rock, step, triple step, triple step, rock, step. Now you can take that basic once you learn it and do exactly what Nicola and I just did and rotate that basic around for East Coast Swing. We're going to go ahead and do that to music. That is East Coast Swing.

How to Do Double Time Swing | Swing Dance
Watch more How to Swing Dance videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/507281-How-to-Do-Double-Time-Swing-Swing-Dance Double time swing. It's step that we use if the music is a little too fast to do triple steps. Now there's two different styles of double time swing depending on what you're doing. In East Coast Swing or Lindy Hop there's a particular type of double style swing that you do. In West Coast Swing there's a slightly different version. It really comes from a touch-step or a step-touch, right? So instead of doing three steps to two beats of music, you're going to do a single action of a touch-step or a step-touch. Alright? So let's start with the step-touch. That's the most common because it's done in East Coast Swing and Lindy Hop. So we're going to go to our left, or you can go to your right, that's fine. And you're going to go step-touch, step-touch. So it's going to be one, two, three, four - still two beats of music. So again, one, two, three, four. I'll do that from the side. One, two, three, four. And from the back. One, two, three, four. So that's step-touch, step-touch. If you're doing East Coast Swing that would be step-touch, step-touch, rock step, step-touch, step-touch, rock step. Or with the right foot, step-touch, step-touch, rock step, step-touch, step-touch, rock step. You can also do the touch-step first. You can go touch-step, touch-step and then do the rock step. If you wanted rock step or if you were doing West Coast Swing you could go into a sugar push or other moves. So again I can go touch-step, touch-step, which is one, two, three, four. Or I can go one, two, three, four. Both of those are considered a double time so that you're able to move to faster music instead of doing a triple step. I know that when I'm dancing swing, a lot of times I start of with triple steps, maybe get a little tired as the dance goes on, and I move into double time steps. Let's do both of them, starting with the step-touch, to music. Five, six. Five, six, seven, eight. And those are your double time rhythms.

Types of Swing Music | Swing Dance
Watch more How to Swing Dance videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/507275-Types-of-Swing-Music-Swing-Dance So what can you dance Swing to? What types of Swing music are there? Well, there's Swing music like Big Band jazz, and the Swing rhythms that we think of when we think of, like. When we think of that really fast, upbeat. So a Lindy Hop might sound something like this. It's fast, jazzy. Now that's a little fast for dancing West Coast Swing or East Coast Swing. East Coast Swing might have a little bit slower temper to it and have a little bit of a bounce to it. It would sound a little like this: [music]. It's got that little pulse. With West Coast Swing we tend to dance to something a little bit more either Blues oriented, like slow Blues, or Pop oriented, or Rhythm & Blues. And it would sound something like this. It's a little more contemporary in its feel, more like something you'd hear on the radio today. In closing, if you're looking for Swing music and you want to dance Lindy Hop, it's always good to go to that late 1920's, 30's, even into the 40's Big Band era. If you're looking for East Coast Swing, some of the bop music that you would have danced to in the 50's. West Coast Swing you can do that with Rhythm & Blues, Blues music, all the way up to today's current, contemporary Pop music. There's just a little information on how you can find good swing music.

What Is Swing Dancing? | Swing Dance
Watch more How to Swing Dance videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/507273-What-Is-Swing-Dancing-Swing-Dance Swing dancing is one of the few forms of couple’s dances that started here in America in the late 1920s. The word swing comes from a style of jazz music that was being done in the late 20s where they took what was called a triplet, a triplet is where you take three beats and put it where two beats would normally be. So they took these triplets into this jazz music and the middle beat of the three, they would push to one side or the other. Instead of having dah, dah, dah, all of equal timing, it would go dah, ba-dah. So it would have a little bit of a delay. Or, Ba-dah, dah. So it would take that middle beat and they would move it to one side or the other. That was called a swung triplet, where we would take that middle beat and swing it to one side or the other. As we started to dance to that jazz music with the swung triplets, it became a swing rhythm. So now we have a swing rhythm. What do you do to it? You swing dance. So the word swing dance and the styles of swing dance that we do all come from music that has a swung triplet. Now the first style of swing we know from 1927 was called the Lindy Hop, and it happened three days after Charles Lindbergh hopped the Atlantic Ocean. All over the newspaper, Lucky Lindy Hops Atlantic. They interviewed a Harlem dancer by the name of Shorty George Snowden and said, what's that dance you're doing to this style of music? And he called it the Lindy Hop. And swing dancing was born.

How to Do the Charleston Step | Swing Dance
Watch more How to Swing Dance videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/507278-How-to-Do-the-Charleston-Step-Swing-Dance The Charleston step -- One of the key elements to understanding swing. Most of us think of Charleston as this little back and forth, kind of underneath us, Charleston step. It's similar to that for swing dancing, but it gets a little bit more athletic. We still do want to think that what's going to happen is, I'm going to have one foot go back. We'll do it with our left, and then we'll do it with our right. Our left goes back, back, and then our right goes forward, forward and then back, back. So that goes back, forward, forward, back, back, forward, forward, back. You could start that with your right foot back as well. So that goes back, forward, forward, back, back, forward, forward, back. That's kind of a basic Charleston step. We're going to show you how we do it in swing dancing. In swing dancing, the Charleston has a little bit more of a kick and athleticism to it. What you are going to do here is to go back, back, like a rock step. You go back. You are going to kick forward, then step. Kick forward, and, as you kick forward, kind of pull that knee up and reach it back to take the step. Then it starts over: back, kick, up, and down; back, kick, up, and down. The timing for that is: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight; one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. With your right foot: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight; one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight; one, two. Now let's try the Charleston step to music, [music playing] starting with your left foot. Now let's start with the right.

How to Do the Triple Step | Swing Dance
Watch more How to Swing Dance videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/507279-How-to-Do-the-Triple-Step-Swing-Dance The triple step. One of the few common denominators done in all styles of swing. What you're doing with the triple step is putting three steps into two beats of music, so if the rhythm was [snap, snap], those two beats, I'm going to do three steps, in that period of time. So the first triple step you're going to learn is just going step together step. Let's start left. We're going to go step-together-step, now to the other side, step-together-step. I'll turn my back so you can try that with me. Left foot, step-together-step, right foot, step-together-step. And you want to kind of be in a slightly athletic position, so you don't want to be back on your heels. You want to be more on the balls of your feet. So again we go step-together-step, step-together-step. Now as we do that, we want to make sure we kind of change up the timing a little bit. So I want you to think little-little-big, little-little-big. Yeah? So we go, triple step, triple step. Now I also want you to think about doing the triple steps maybe with the foot going behind then side. You're going to go behind-then-side, behind-then-side. So we have triple step, triple step. So we have a sideways triple. Ready, triple step, triple step. And we have a triple step that's a little bit more in place where one foot goes behind and then comes back to the side, behind-then-side, behind-then-side. And now let's try the triple step to music. Five, six, seven, eight. And that is the triple step.

Lindy Swing Dance Lifts Practice, 1950's Style
Practice with my partner in swing-dance-crime, Tiadee Too. :-) The first hour was of dance steps and footwork, but this video here is of our second hour...flips and tricks! The new trick for us together, nicknamed "the judo throw" (for obvious reasons) is the first on this video and the second, a spotted back tuck that I do off of her shoulder, is one that has been shown in our previous practices. Both tricks are inspired (or stolen!) from my studies of 1950's rock n' roll movie dancers (the first learned from stock footage of jitterbug dancers at a rock n' roll concert sometime around 1958, featured in the documentary "Twist!" and the second is a variation of a flip that Joe Lanza did in the 1956 movie "Don't Knock The Rock!", but done on the opposite side as Mr. Lanza.) Considering that these are new to Tiadee Too...I think she's doing GREAT(!) and we plan to use these in performance routines for corporate gigs, as well as eventually, competing together. ;-) Plus, we want to do some aerials workshops together for performers in both San Francisco and the Southbay. The song we are practicing to is "Two Hearts" by Otis Williams and The Charms (no, not Pat Boone!) Kristina: And I'm Kristina. Aaron: And we're professional dance instructors coming at you today from New York City, and today we're going to be talking about the swing and a little step we like to call the American spin. So let's take a look at this one. Guys, what we're going to be doing here to start is we're going to be changing hands and starting with what we call a handshake hold. So from here we're going to fall into our basic action, taking our left foot for the gentlemen, or right foot for the ladies, and rocking behind. Rock step, triple step, leaning in and indicating with our upper body the change of direction here. So we're not going to let our elbows travel behind our bodies because we're going to be winding up together leaning in sharing this connection here. Just send the lady to turn. Kristina: So at this point, our right foot, we're on count four. When we step on four we're going to use this good kind of build up of rotation. And ladies it's really important again, don't let your elbow go behind your back, because you're going to want to lean into this so that when you step on four you can start to turn. I'm going to look like this. Four, five and six, rock step. So, from here we're going to do the rock step. One, two, three and four, five and six, rock step. Aaron: So, let's also talk about how we're getting to that handshake hold because we're normally used to starting with either a two-hand hold in our close position, so from here what we want to do is go back. One, two, leading our lady's underarm turn, changing to a handshake hold. One and two, three and four, starting with a two-hand hold and changing over to the handshake, triple, triple, rock step. Now let's try that to some music.

Lindy Hop Instruction How To Do The Smooth Style Whip for Swing Dancers with Prior Experience
Bay Area Lindy Hop instructors Michael Quebec and Roberta Maas demonstrate some of the concepts behind the Smooth Style Lindy Hop Whip. Not a step by step instructional video, but a quick breakdown of the Smooth Lindy Hop Whip, intended for dancers who have had prior experience in either Savoy Lindy or West Coast Swing, who just want to try a closely related dance style. Generally speaking, Smooth Lindy Hop works well with '40's Big Band and '50's Rock n' Roll songs that have a "shuffling" type of rhythm. Stay tuned to this channel as we will be doing a step by step breakdown of the whip for beginners. *Note: This is a re-upload from Sabinoson's channel. All swing dance videos from that channel will now be housed here, so if you like swing dancing, subscribe to THIS channel (Esperanza Quebec.)
