Alcohol and anger make for a devastating combination, but they DO make for great songs. Well I took a fifth, and I poured me a shot And I thought about all the things that I haven't got And I drank that down, and I poured me some more Kept drinking and pouring till I felt the floor I got drunk and I fell down Another slow day in this damn town Keep asking yourself "why am I still hangin' around?" You spend half your time just staring into a beer What you need, you know, you can't find here I got drunk and I fell down Well I took a fifth, and I poured me a shot And I thought about all the things that I haven't got And I drank that down, and I poured me some more Kept drinking and pouring till I felt the floor I got drunk and I fell down

An excellent cover of the Soft Boys classic. It's the B-Side from 1990's "I Got Drunk" b/w "Sin City" seven inch. You can get a reissue of this and other great Uncle Tupelo albums via their The Seven Inch Singles Box - http://uncletupelo.kungfustore.com/products/3573-the-seven-inch-singles-box-tup18 For more great music, podcasts, and music reviews visit Visions of the Unexcused http://theunexcused.com - This is Derek on a typical weeknight. The audio was recorded in Audacity via my Audio-Technica AT-LP120-USB Direct-Drive turntable.

I got drunk at a McDougall show. Tried to hop over a 4 foot high gate (that I thought was latched) out the back patio of the saloon. Gate swung open under me and I hit the ground with my head... hard. Rode my bike home, got the BEST chile relleno burrito EVER on the way, had my loving partner clean me up. That night I had her wake me up in hour intervals and ask me simple questions to see if I was OK and hadn't scrambled my brain.

"Effigy" is the last track on Creedence Clearwater Revival's classic, Willy and the Poor Boys. Uncle Tupelo slow it down and give it the full Neil Young treatment. This works so well, you wonder why it took someone a quarter-century to think of it. Or maybe it just seems obvious in retrospect. http://ondeafears.com/
