Family Seal Safari in Wadden Sea National Park - Denmark | Fanoe Travel Video

Earlier this year we went on a small vacation to Wadden Sea National Park in Denmark and the UNESCO World Heritage Site near Fanoe. It all started with a family seal safari where we spent a day of exploration in one of the most beautiful parts of our little country. During the trip we learnt a lot about sand worms, some special techniques that birds use to get the mussels, played in the sand and the mud flats, and of course spotted some seals. Every year, millions of migratory birds stop here to break up their long journey. Thanks to the constant rhythm of the tides, you can walk on the seabed at low-tide. In 2009 the Wadden Sea was made a UNESCOWorld Natural Heritage site. Many thanks to http://www.kickthegrind.tv/, http://www.storytravelers.com and http://www.trademarkpictures.tv/! The Wadden Sea is defined by the tides. Twice a day, the vast mudflats are flooded and twice a day they re-emerge when the tide recedes, creating a fertile habitat for countless plants and animals. Take a guided tour of the mudflats and you can wander about on the seabed and find mudflat worms, cockles and shore crabs. Wadden Sea on UNESCO World Heritage list

Wadden Sea National Park is an excellent example of a coastal wetland between Den Helder in the Netherlands and Esbjerg in Denmark. It is the largest unbroken stretch of intertidal mudflats in the world, and the perfect example of a coastal wetland with high biological, hydrological and ecological importance, shared between three countries: Germany, the Netherlands, and Denmark. The area is of international importance being a nursery of marine life, a resting, moulting and feeding area for several millions of migratory birds, and a habitat for thousands of birds, seals and many other species. The Wadden Sea, an estuary of the North Sea, has a total area of about 8000 square km. It is the world's biggest coherent habitat of its kind and one of the last unspoiled estuaries in Europe. There are many varied and extensive habitats in the Wadden Sea. This important estuary includes the salt marshes along the coast line as well as the islands and dunes. The mud flats consist of the areas which get flooded twice a day and then fall dry again, and of the channel system of tideways, channels and shipping channels between the islands, which are responsible for the flooding and for the draining. The mud flats are known for their very low inclination which is usually less than 1 meter of difference in altitude on a 1000 meter long stretch. About fifty islands and islets protect the shallow Wadden Sea. This 28 minutes documentary is part of the tv-series WONDERS of WILDERNESS and is available on DVD or broadcast video. The 12-part series colourfully introduces a dozen of the worlds most important national parks with their rich flora, fauna and awe-inspiring geological wonders. The series demonstrates the wisdom of the national park founders who made it possible to create safe havens for plant and animal life. They led the way in teaching us how vital it is to protect our soil, air and water from pollution both for ourselves and for future generations. © and information at WWW.FAUNAFILM.NL

Dutch Wadden Sea (Waddenzee) - UNESCO World Heritage @ We Love Earth

03:20
On Earth, where water meets land, often life is most abundant. Here the two are in a very intimate dance – the ever-lasting tidal play in the Dutch Wadden Sea, one of the most beautiful landscapes of Europe, and one of its ecologically most important nature reserves, a UNESCO World Heritage site in its entirety. Here life is at every level. Millions upon millions of migratory birds, with many populations depending on these feeding grounds for their survival. From a tiny hermit crab to the system itself, alive as it breaths, as it flows, floods and settles and forms – forms the most beautiful art of nature, only to redraw it all the very next day. There are large populations of two different types of seals, the harbour seal and the grey seal – weighing up to 350 kilos, the largest mammal (on land) of western Europe – since the elk and brown bear are gone. Land is taken here, and land is formed. On those ridges that are dry long enough for the wind to catch the sand tiny dunes are formed – kept in place by marram grass, one of the bravest little plants of our planet, collecting fresh water from the rain and making a soil from nothing but sand. Furthest from the gullies clay is deposited in salt marshes, adding greens to a landscape of greys, browns, ochers, blues and white – and offering a shelter and spawning ground to many types of fish. In other words, the Wadden Sea is vibrant – it is wild, it is strong, and it is very much alive. The Wadden Sea is also threatened though. Threatened by forecasts of escalating sea level rise, threatened by an increasingly eager gas industry – that wants to drill and even frack for gas, even though the land subsidence this extraction causes may speed up the relative sea level rise. The Wadden Sea is strong and sturdy. But we cannot stand by idle as it drowns. We have to prevent the melting of the Greenland and West Antarctic ice sheets and the several metres of sea level rise this causes. This means we have to stop fossil fuels. We also have to stop that same industry locally. No gas extraction under UNESCO World Heritage nature reserves. No gas drilling in the Wadden Sea! For more information and to express support, please take a look at Gasvrij Waddenzee – the special page devoted to remove the gas industry from this unique natural landscape, one of the pearls of Europe and our planet. Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park

07:29
The Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park is a national park in the Schleswig-Holstein area of the German Wadden Sea. It was founded by the Parliament of Schleswig-Holstein on 1 October 1985 by the National Park Act of 22 July 1985 and expanded significantly in 1999. Together with the Lower Saxon Wadden Sea National Park, the Hamburg Wadden Sea National Park and those parts of Elbe estuary which are not nature reserves, it forms the German part of the Wadden Sea. The national park extends from the German-Danish maritime border in the north down to the Elbe estuary in the south. In the North Frisian area, it includes the mudflats around the geest-based and marsh islands and the Halligen. There the mudflats are 40 km wide in places. Further south lie areas of mudflats which contain particularly large sandbanks. In addition to the plants and animals that are typical of the entire Wadden Sea, especially large numbers of porpoise, shelduck and eelgrass may be seen in the Schleswig-Holstein part. Wadden Sea | We WALKED to a German Island!

19:05
In this episode, we're going on a 3-hour "mud flat hike" across the ocean floor during low tide to walk to the German island of Baltrum. The Wadden Sea National Park (Wattenmeer) has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2009. During our Germany vacation to the North Sea, we also embark on a traditional German fishing boat ("fish cutter") and see harbor seals! We then visit the islands of Baltrum and Spiekeroog where we explore the islands' interiors and typical German beaches, and their adorable beach baskets (Strandkorb). Often it is a reserve of natural, semi-natural, or developed land that a sovereign state declares or owns. Although individual nations designate their own national parks differently, there is a common idea: the conservation of wild nature for posterity and as a symbol of national pride. An international organization, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and its World Commission on Protected Areas, has defined "National Park" as its Category II type of protected areas. While this type of national park had been proposed previously, the United States established the first "public park or pleasuring-ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people", Yellowstone National Park, in 1872. Although Yellowstone was not officially termed a "national park" in its establishing law, it was always termed such in practice and is widely held to be the first and oldest national park in the world. Some would say that the first official national park to be designated as such at its creation was Mackinac Island, legislated in 1875. Australia's Royal National Park, established in 1879, was the world's third official national park. In 1895 ownership of Mackinac Island was transferred to the State of Michigan as a state park and national park status was consequently lost. As a result Australia's Royal National Park is by some considerations the second oldest national park now in existence. The largest national park in the world meeting the IUCN definition is the Northeast Greenland National Park, which was established in 1974. According to the IUCN, 6,555 national parks worldwide met its criteria in 2006. IUCN is still discussing the parameters of defining a national park. National parks are almost always open to visitors. Most national parks provide outdoor recreation and camping opportunities as well as classes designed to educate the public on the importance of conservation and the natural wonders of the land in which the national park is located. Nature Notes from the Wadden Sea #08

02:25
Wadden Sea National Park is an excellent example of a coastal wetland between Den Helder in the Netherlands and Esbjerg in Denmark. It is the largest unbroken stretch of intertidal mudflats in the world, and the perfect example of a coastal wetland with high biological, hydrological and ecological importance, shared between three countries: Germany, the Netherlands, and Denmark. The area is of international importance being a nursery of marine life, a resting, moulting and feeding area for several millions of migratory birds, and a habitat for thousands of birds, seals and many other species. Ducks, grebes and moorhens, all doing what comes naturally - living and surviving. In the wad, the water, wind, plants and animals provide for natural variation. It is the task of nature conservationists to create the necessary protective conditions. Since June 2014 it has constituted the Danish part of the UNESCO's Wadden Sea World Heritage Site. Prince Joachim of Denmark is Patron of the Wadden Sea Centre. The Wadden Sea National Park is - except Greenland by far the largest of Denmark's national parks and covers the Danish part of the Wadden Sea from Ho Bugt to the German border, and includes the islands of Fanø, Mandø and Rømø, as well as Skallingen, the Varde Å valley, and many of the marshlands of Tjæreborgmarsken, Ribemarsken, Margrethekogen and De Ydre Diger in Tøndermarsken. The Wadden Sea is internationally known as a resting place for millions of migratory birds, and more than 10 million of them pass through the Wadden Sea twice a year. Large flocks of European starlings can be found which fly in formations known as the sort sol. The Wadden Sea also has large numbers of breeding birds, fish, and invertebrates such as starfish and blue mussels. It provides habitat for more than 500 species of plants and animals. 97% of the national park is part of Natura 2000, divided into several projects: a bird sanctuary, a wildlife sanctuary, and Ramsar wetlands of international importance. The areas comprise biomes like the low-lying flat coast, tidal channels, tidal flats, stream mouths, beach meadows, sandplains and dunes.

This 28 minutes documentary is part of the tv-series WONDERS of WILDERNESS and is available on DVD or VHS (Dutch or English version) The 12-part series colourfully introduces a dozen of the worlds most important national parks with their rich flora, fauna and awe-inspiring geological wonders. The series demonstrates the wisdom of the national park founders who made it possible to create safe havens for plant and animal life. They led the way in teaching us how vital it is to protect our soil, air and water from pollution both for ourselves and for future generations.
