Killer Whales Attack Elephant Seal: Patagonia

08:39
In the middle of February, the sea lions receive the second visit of their most feared predators – the killer whales. The orcas also have young who must be taught how to hunt, and the peninsula is the best training ground. The sea lion colonies are full of young, inexperienced pups, playing on the shore, and hundreds of adults going into and out of the sea to feed. Food is everywhere, and what’s more it’s easy to catch. With the enemy around, everyone is on their guard. This is a single family group, and it’s on the watch, scanning the beach in search of prey. They won’t have to wait long. After waiting for them to pass by, a sea lion decides to enter the sea. The female leading the group of orcas has seen it, and they all turn back. It’s the chance they had been waiting for. The sea lion has just realised, but now it’s too late. Its fate has been decided. The male desperately tries to reach the shore, his only hope of salvation, but he has swum too far out, and the orcas will not let him escape. The young actively participate in hunting. They have to learn how to kill, and dodge the attacks of the wounded sea lion. The killer whales are in no hurry. Their victim is fatally wounded and has no chance of escaping. Better to be patient and wait for it to weaken while they practice attacks on it. After several minutes of fighting, the sea lion is as far away from the coast as at the start. All efforts will be futile against one of the largest and most intelligent predators in the ocean. The killer whales attack in family groups, led by the oldest female. Each group has its own communication sounds, and hunting techniques which they practice with the young. This organisation enables them to hunt not only fish, sea lions and elephant seals, but even sharks and large cetaceans. Little by little, blood loss and the exertion weaken the prey. Attacks become increasingly slow and spaced out. Very soon, it will no longer be able to defend itself, and will die. After a struggle that has lasted over 45 minutes, the elephant seal dies and is devoured by the family of killer whales. Slowly, calm returns to the sea.

AMAZING KILLER WHALE ATTACK ON SEA LION

02:54
Hey guys, bill here. I don't know about you but lately I have been seeing lots of stories about Animals being more intelligent than we give them credit for. From woodpeckers that use sticks as tools to rats that can count, there seems to be more awareness of animal smarts these days, but the video that really rocked my world on the subject was this one. It was shot by a German tourist in Antarctica. And it shows how killer whales are adapting to global climate change intelligently. Killer whales have always hunted and eaten seals. But as ocean temperatures rise and ice breaks up into small pieces, it gives seals lots of platforms to hang out on to escape killer whales. So the whales have come up to their own solution to this. And scientists like to call it wave washing. It's amazing - check it out. The whales get together in a group, and swim at the iceberg in formation. This creates a wave that can knock the seal off the ice. I mean, i feel sorry for the seal, but you have to admit, those whales are no dummies. As the video rolls on we see the seal jump back on top of the ice and escape the whales. This happens at least a half dozen times. Now you might think the whale's strategy isn't so smart after all... but when you take a closer look you realize there is something else going on here. If you watch closely, this whale back here actually gives a signal to the other whales to start to move forward. But as they do - and I'm going to stop the video here - we see there is a baby whale mixed in with the group. According to a whale expert what we are watching is "hunting school" EXPERT: It's not that the whales are bad at catching the seal because they are trying to train that baby how to hunt. Its all about learning! And that my friends brings me to the question of the day. Do you think animals are smarter than we think they are? Or are we humans the only species with smarts. . Leave me your answer in the comment section.... below!

Feast Of Predator - Seals vs Sharks - Amazing Nature Documentary

50:27
Pinnipeds (/ˈpɪnᵻˌpɛdz/) (from Latin pinna "fin" and pes, pedis "foot"), commonly known as seals,[a] are a widely distributed and diverse clade of carnivorous, fin-footed, semiaquatic marine mammals. They comprise the extant families Odobenidae (whose only living member is the walrus), Otariidae (the eared seals: sea lions and fur seals), and Phocidae (the earless seals, or true seals). There are 33 extant species of pinnipeds, and more than 50 extinct species have been described from fossils. While seals were historically thought to have descended from two ancestral lines, molecular evidence supports them as a monophyletic lineage (descended from one ancestral line). Pinnipeds belong to the order Carnivora and their closest living relatives are bears and musteloids (weasels, raccoons, skunks and red pandas), having diverged about 50 million years ago.

Sea Lion Attacks King Penguin

04:07
Warning/Spoiler alert - a penguin is captured and eaten. A sea lion gives a dramatic chase and catches a king penguin during the early morning hours at Volunteer Point in the Falkland Islands. It was amazing to see just how far the sea lion galloped, up across the dunes and toward the king penguin and gentoo colonies on land. It's clear that the sea lion has exerted a substantial amount of energy obtaining this meal based on how many times he has to rest afterward, and then collapses into the water back on the beach. Notice also how the sea lion grabs the penguin by its back, seemingly fearful that it will get its eye poked by the penguin's bill or whacked in the nose by the penguin's rock-hard flippers. Yes, believe it or not, penguin flippers are tough enough to inflict a great amount of pain or even break bones! Penguins need your help! Visit www.PenguinsInternational.org to donate.

Girl attacked by sea lion in Canada treated for possible ‘seal finger’ infection

00:41
Contact [email protected] to license this or any News Direct video. For story suggestions please contact [email protected] A little girl who was pulled underwater by a sea lion in Richmond, British Columbia is getting treatment following concerns that she may contract a painful disease known as “seal finger”. ABC reports that seal finger is caused by tiny mycoplasma phocacerebrale bacteria found in the mouths of seals, sea lions, and other sea mammals. Seal finger is so named because fingers are the most commonly affected, though the infection can occur in other body parts. Infections typically occur through bites, or when a preexisting wound becomes exposed to the animal’s blood or saliva. The affected area becomes swollen and tender with cellulitis, and can progress to joint damage. Mycoplasma do not have cell walls, which makes them resistant to certain antibiotics such as penicillin. Fortunately, tetracycline has been known to successfully treat the condition. Many sealers have lost fingers or whole hands to the disease, back when treatment was not yet available. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Next Animation Studio’s News Direct service provides daily, high-quality, informative 3D news animations that fill in for missing footage and help viewers understand breaking news stories or in-depth features on science, technology, and health. Johnny Gaskell, 35, from Australia was filming at Hook Island in Queensland back in February with his friend, Paddy Nash, when the Green Sea Turtle they were following noticed something in the water. The turtle had a tasty jellyfish in his sights and before you can say 'whats for dinner?', the hangry sea turtle took a bite. Johnny said: "I have seen a turtle eat a dead Blubber Jellyfish but never an alive Lion's Mane Jelly Turtle. **Please contact [email protected] to licence this content** Company Information: Caters Clips is owned and operated by Caters News Agency Ltd, an international multimedia content provider. Sea Lions Cut Free from Garbage

The Vancouver Aquarium's veterinarian, Dr. Martin Haulena, aims his gun at a California sea lion. But instead of bullets, it's loaded with tranquilizer darts. Dr. Haulena, along with the Aquarium's veterinary team and marine mammal consulting biologist Wendy Szaniszlo, spent a day on the west coast of Vancouver Island (Barkley-Clayoquot region) in October 2013, looking for entangled sea lions. On this day, they saw nine entangled sea lions. They were able to disentangle two California sea lions after safely sedating them and cutting the plastic fish-packing straps they had around their necks. This mission was done in partnership with Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Parks Canada, Brian Gisborne of Juan de Fuca Express and the Canadian Wildlife Federation. In 2011, the Aquarium rescued "Flash," a California sea lion that had ingested four feet of fishing equipment. After his rehabilitation at the Aquarium's Marine Mammal Rescue Centre, Flash was successfully released back to his home waters. The Rescue Centre is currently caring for a rescued sea otter suffering from gunshot wounds. Learn more about the Rescue Centre: vanaqua.org/mmr

Sea lion eating a mola mola

00:31
While 8 miles offshore San Diego, we happened upon this sea lion devouring a mola. We got in with him while the carcass was relatively whole, and watched him quickly eat the rest of it! He was very protective and wouldn't let me get too close, frequently dragging the mola away from me and the camera. Music by: Lorde - Team (Autograf Remix) No copyright

Sea Lion vs Thresher Shark! Rare Footage! Fresh Kills! Sea Lions Attacking And Eating A Shark

01:10
If you thought sharks were the undisputed kings of the ocean, you were wrong. These crazy photographs and video show a group of sea lions munching on a shark. Slater Moore, a photographer who specializes in marine wildlife photography, snapped these unbelievable images of five California sea lions attacking and eating a small thresher shark just off the coast of Newport Beach, California during a whale-watching tour. "It was absolutely insane," Moore, a member of the boat's crew, told The Huffington Post. "Predator becoming prey, nature's finest!" As weird as this behavior might seem, it’s not as scientifically surprising as you may think. California sea lions are opportunistic eaters, meaning they chow down on pretty much anything they can get their flippers on. That includes octopus, herring, rockfish, mackerel, and, of course, small sharks. Speaking to Hakai Magazine, Chris Lowe, a shark researcher in California, says he sees that sort of thing all the time. “It’s pretty common here in California. California sea lions will kill five-foot-long (1.5 meter) leopard sharks,” he said. “Over the course of one summer I watched one bull sea lion basically knock an entire aggregation of leopard sharks down to nothing.” Video: Slater Moore Photography Source: IFL

BADASS Ocean Creatures That EAT Land Animals!

Check out these BADASS Ocean Creatures That EAT Land Animals! This top 10 list of fish that eat creatures on land has some of the most amazing and craziest wildlife in nature! Killifish It may not be too far a stretch to call the Killifish one of the most unique and interesting fish in the world. That's because this is a fish that only lives for about a year, and it uses its body as a missile in order to get food. However, one of the most shocking and surprising things about it, is that it can live on land for a week despite being a fish!! 8. European Wels Catfish The Wels Catfish is one of the world’s largest freshwater fish. This giant fish is native to Eastern Europe but can now be found all over thanks to fishermen who wanted to be able to fish them for sport in Spain and Italy. These fish can get up to 15 feet long and weigh anywhere from 300 to 600 pounds!! 7. Silver Arowana In South America, there is a fish known as the Silver Arowana, and it's known to be quite a vicious predator. It has a leaping ability that is so good that they are able to jump out of the water in order to catch birds, insects, and even grab low-hanging snakes. Just as important though is that they do it with such speed and accuracy that their prey doesn't have time to react, ensuring that they get their meal. 6. Eel Catfish The Eel Catfish is another unique fish that has developed the ability to move onto land!! This fish is found in the muddy swamps of western Africa can grow 12-16 in long (30-40cm). What’s weird about them is that they love to eat beetles which are found on land! The fish has to be hungry enough to want to go through the effort but when it does, it propels itself onto the shore, raises up the front part of its body, and lunges at it with its jaws wide so it can bite down on the beetle. 5. Giant Trevally When BBC was filming their special "Blue Planet II", they were given a tip that there were fish eating birds off of the coast of the Seychelles. The fish that was doing this was one that had not been documented before as ever eating birds! The Giant Trevally fish. 4. Rainbow Trout When it comes to the Rainbow Trout, it already had a reputation for being an extraordinary fish. Mainly because of its fighting spirit and the ability it has to leap out of the water, but when a research team caught a very special Rainbow Trout on camera, they were shocked!! Inside the Rainbow Trout were about 20 shrews. 3. Sharks Sharks are one of the top predators in the ocean, and so you might think that they wouldn't even need to feast on land animals or birds in order to feed their hunger. But the fact of the matter is, when a shark is hungry, they are not going to be picky!! They're known for eating seals, sea lions, and other creatures that hover between land and sea, and for certain species like Tiger Sharks, they're perfectly fine with catching birds right out of the air. 2. Archer Fish When it comes to a creature of the water getting a creature on the land, or in the air, they usually have to develop a special technique. The Archer Fish preys on bugs and other small creatures that hover too close to the water. And with the Archer Fish, they have arguably gotten the most unique, and potentially epic, adaptation of all: the ability to shoot water like a bullet. 1. Orcas While Orcas are not fish, I had to include them on this list because they are very impressive apex predators!! These guys are known as Killer Whales for a reason and they have earned that title by killing creatures both in the water and on land. mola mola finned alive

01:25
While diving the Channel Islands I swam across a mola mola that had been finned. As you can see while it's still alive and breathing, it's about to die a slow death. It will probably be eaten by sea stars. This cruel practice is actually part of mother nature. Sea lions like to eat the mola mola's fins and tail, then play frisbe with what you see in the video. When the sea lions are done playing they leave the poor mola mola to die a slow tortured death.
