Depending on the speed of the purchase cycle in the category, tracking can be done continuously (a few interviews every week) or it can be “pulsed,” with interviews conducted in widely spaced waves (ex. every three or six months). Interviews can either be conducted with separate, matched samples of consumers, or with a single (longitudinal) panel that is interviewed over time. Since the researcher has information on when the ads launched, the length of each advertising flight, the money spent, and when the interviews were conducted, the results of ad tracking can provide information on the effects of advertising. The purpose of ad tracking is generally to provide a measure of the combined effect of the media weight or spending level, the effectiveness of the media buy or targeting, and the quality of the advertising executions or creative. Advertisers use the results of ad tracking to estimate the return on investment (ROI) of advertising, and to refine advertising plans. Sometimes, tracking data are used to provide inputs to Marketing Mix Models which marketing science statisticians build to estimate the role of advertising, as compared to pricing, distribution and other marketplace variables on sales of the brand. Today, most ad tracking studies are conducted via the Internet. Some ad tracking studies are conducted continuously and others are conducted at specific points in time (typically before the advertising appears in market, and then again after the advertising has been running for some period of time). The two approaches use different types of analyses, although both start by measuring advertising awareness. Typically, the respondent is either shown a brief portion of a commercial or a few memorable still images from the TV ad. Other media typically are cued using either branded or de-branded visual of the ad. Then, respondents answer three significant questions. Do you recognize this ad? (recognition measure)? The continuous tracking design analyzes advertising awareness over time, in relation to ad spending; separately, this design tracks brand awareness, and then develops indices of effectiveness based on the strength of the correlations between ad spending and brand awareness. The most popular alternate approach to the continuous tracking design is the Communicants System longitudinal design, in which the same people are interviewed at two points in time. Changes in brand measures (for example, brand purchasing and future purchase intentions) exhibited among those who have seen the advertising are compared to the changes in brand measures that occurred among those unaware of advertising. By means of this method, the researchers can isolate those marketplace changes that were produced by advertising versus those that would have occurred without advertising. There are several different tools to effectively track online ads: banner ads, ppc ads, pop-up ads, and other types. Several online advertising companies such as Google offer their own ad tracking service in order to effectively use their service to generate a positive ROI. Third-party ad tracking services are commonly used by affiliate marketers. Affiliate marketers are frequently unable to have access to the order page and therefore are unable to use a 3rd-party tool. Many different companies have created tools to effectively track their commissions in order to optimize their profit potential. The information provided will show the marketer which advertising methods are generating income and which are not. This information will allow the marketer to effectively allocate his budget in the best possible way.

Having a social media presence on any social network is not enough. You should collect social media metrics for the actions performed to market your business on social media. With proper tracking in place, social media optimization becomes easy as you know where to cut the chord and where to double your efforts. However, it can be very tricky to track everything as there is so much information you can now collect and it’s easy to get overwhelmed. So in order to make sure your efforts are tracked properly and consistently and you’re collecting social media metrics, you need to implement the following social media tips. The first step is setting a goal for your business to be achieved within an average of 30 days or more depending on your goal. Your goals should be realistic and set according to where you are at on social media, according to your business, according to your budget and time commitment. There are 4 types of goals you can set on social media: -Brand awareness goals -Social Media Engagement goals -Social Media Traffic goals -Lead generation goals Starting with setting goals will allow you to perform social media optimization for any campaign based on your goal and objective. The ultimate goal for any business is always of course to generate leads but this goal cannot be achieved unless you have a large and engaged audience and unless your audience has been trained to click on your links in your posts. This is why it’s important to set a goal based on where you are at now instead of jumping straight away to setting a lead generation goal if you’re starting from scratch. Your goal should also be specific and have a clear deadline. For example, “build our audience” as a goal, is not specific enough, whereas, “Go from 60 Facebook fans to 2,000 Facebook fans based in Germany, within the next 90 days” is specific enough. With such as specific goal, Facebook monitoring will be easy and straightforward. Once you have set your goal, know your key performance indicator (also known as KPI). A KPI is a measurable value that allows businesses to know whether they’re achieving their goal.Having a KPI attached to your goal, will make your Facebook monitoring process easy. Once you’ve set a realistic, specific and time sensitive goal and you’ve attached a KPI to your goal, you need to decide on which social media metrics tool to use to allow you to measure your results. For brand awareness goals and engagement goals you can use the built-in analytics provided by platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, as it’s easy to see how many followers or fans you’ve gained. For Facebook monitoring for example, go to your Facebook page and click on “insights” and then “page likes”. When you do, you’ll be able to collect information based on the previous day, the past 7 days or the past 28 days. Should you have set a social media traffic goal and your KPI is the number of clicks your links have generated, you’ll have to use third party tools. There are many link tracking tools available such as clickmeter.com. With Clickmeter, there are 3 types of subscriptions depending on the tracking you need, called medium, large and extra large. There are other similar tools to Clickmeter such as Clickperfect.com and linktrack.info. When you’re at the stage of tracking traffic generated from your social media efforts you’ll have a better understanding of whether your web pages you are sending people to are converting. If you’re generating hundreds of clicks to your other touch points and none of these visitors are converting into a lead or a subscriber or even an enquiry, then you know you’re not having a social media traffic problem but a conversion problem. Therefore, setting up the right click tracking system is key to troubleshooting your results. Lastly, should you have a lead generation goal and your KPI is the number of contacts you’ve collected, you’ll also have to use a third party tool. Usually, the easiest way to track your leads is through the CRM system you use such as mailchimp, aweber, getresponse and infusionsoft. On infusionsoft for example, you can check the total of new leads collected in total for all your campaigns in the past 30 days, 90 days or year. Alternatively, Infusion soft allows you to see how many leads you’ve collected for each individual campaign you’ve run. Once you’ve set your goal, identified your key performance indicator and set up a tracking system accordingly, keep track of your stats in a spreadsheet so you can measure your performance over a period of time. For example, you could have the following columns: Name of campaign Start Date End date Number of clicks Number of leads So there you have it. These social media tips for tracking, measuring and monitoring should allow you to do more of what works and less of what doesn’t and allow you to finally stop spinning your wheels when it comes to social media marketing.

Retailers can now learn so much more about shopper behavior than ever before, and while these “big data” applications create concerns about privacy, the detailed data can be used to design stores, product offerings and promotions that connect with our interests, speed up the shopping process, and help us find items we will buy. These new tools are critical to improving store efficiency and shoppability; and offer a vision of the future of retailing. Raymond R. Burke (Bloomington, IN USA) is the E.W. Kelley Professor of Business Administration at Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business, and founding director of the School’s Customer Interface Laboratory, a state-of-the-art facility for investigating how customers interact with new retail environments and technologies. His research focuses on understanding the influence of point-of-purchase factors–including new products, product packaging, pricing, promotions, assortments, and displays–on consumer shopping behavior. Dr. Burke has served on the faculties of the Harvard Business School and the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School. His articles have appeared in several major journals, including the Harvard Business Review, the Journal of Consumer Research, the Journal of Marketing, and Marketing Science.
