Despite progress in ensuring opportunities for women in STEM fields, women and girls continue to be systematically underrepresented as users and leaders in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. In order to achieve the sustainable development goals, we need to ensure full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls. February 11 is International Day of Women and Girls in Science. Join UN Women in celebrating women and girls in STEM fields, challenging stereotypes, and championing opportunities for women and girls in science and technology. Video message by H.E. Mr. António Guterres, United Nations Secretary-General, on the occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (11 February), aired at the Third International Day of Women and Girls in Science Forum Both girls and boys have the potential to pursue their ambitions in science and mathematics, in school and at work. But systemic discrimination means women occupy less than 30 percent of research and development jobs worldwide. We need concerted, concrete efforts to overcome stereotypes and biases. One starting point is banishing the predominantly male images of scientists and innovators on social media, in textbooks and in advertising. We need to encourage and support girls and women achieve their full potential as scientific researchers and innovators. Women and girls need this, and the world needs this, if we are to achieve our ambitions for sustainable development on a healthy planet. Throughout history, from Hildegard of Bingen to Wangari Maathai, women scientists have built our world. It’s time to support and invest in them.

Address by Dr. Mukhisa Kituyi, Secretary General of UNCTAD, on the occaision of International Day of Women and Girls in Science, 11 February 2018 UNCTAD is the UN focal point for the integrated treatment of trade and the interrelated issues of finance, investment and technology for development, and the institutional home of the UN Commission for Science and Technology for Development, the torchbearer for technology and innovation in the UN family. That is why we are keenly aware of the fundamental contribution of science, technology and innovation to global efforts to achieve the SDGs by 2030. Bringing more women and girls into science, and focussing more and more science on the specific concerns and needs of women will be key for our success in this endeavour. Women scientists are indispensable contributors to finding solutions towards peace and development. But they remain only a minor proportion of researchers in the world, particularly at higher levels of decision-making. And there is a persistent gap in the number of women graduating from and working in STEM Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields, which are becoming particularly decisive in a global economy experiencing rapid technological change. Many reasons are behind the low numbers of women in science: access to and quality of education; job market opportunities; stereotypes; lack of role models, mentorship and sponsorship; workplace culture and work-life balance. Closing this gap will require profound changes in the organization and professional culture in the STEM field. We also need to introduce girls early to female science role models and use mentoring programs to overcome stereotypes and bring and keep more young women in science. At UNCTAD XIV in Nairobi, member states provided UNCTAD with its strongest ever mandate on gender across all the areas of our work on trade, finance, investment and technology. In technology, our research is exploring how women can benefit from the globalization of science by fulfilling international collaboration opportunities. UNCTAD also partners with UN agencies, civil society and the private sector towards helping women benefit from the opportunities provided by the digital revolution and addressing the gender digital divide. We are committed to chart a way forward in supporting inclusive and sustainable development, that fully takes into account the needs of women and men, girls and boys, and ensures that the talents of all are able to contribute. website: unctad.org

Science is critical to addressing the social and environmental challenges that confront us. The world needs science more than ever, and science needs everyone – including women. Makes sense, right? And yet, according to the 2015 UNESCO Science Report, women account for only 28% of researchers across the world, and are even less represented at the higher echelons of decision-making. Women are interested and capable in STEM, so why such underrepresentation? Largely because of the persistence of gender stereotypes and biases. The Ontario Science Centre is adding its voice to International Day of Women and Girls in Science, advocating publicly for parity in science for women. Science needs women.

Just a few decades ago, it was a rare sight to see a woman working in a #STEM field (science, technology, engineering, mathematics). Today, while more common, women are still outnumbered 3 to 1 by their male counterparts. Based on scientific research, we've identified five actions that will help engage more girls in STEM. EPI is implementing these initiatives into its daily work as part of its #STEM4Good campaign. And you can, too. There have been many talented and intelligent women in science that have made significant impacts in the world from discovering the structure of DNA to teaching us about wildlife ecology. In order to achieve full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls, and further achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls, the United Nations General Assembly declared February 11th as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. I posted a blog about some of the women in science that have inspired me to pursue a career in this field, including Rosalind Franklin, Alice Ball, Dian Fossey, Jane Goodall, Mae C. Jemison, Winny Dong, my sister Alessandra Lopez, and Martina Nagy. To check it out visit www.veterinaryadventures.com/blog 👩🏻🔬🔬 Tell me below who inspires you!
