The venomous thorn-like spines that protect this starfish are the least of our problems - this species is destroying coral reefs in many parts of the world due to an imbalance in the oceans - find out more in this video.

harlequin shrimp. all they eat is starfish. and 1 of these tiny shrimp will eat one of these starfish a week. and these shrimp are indeed tiny. they will take arms off and let the starfish live if there is not a big enough population. but if the starfish population is big enough. harlequin shrimp will destroy them. just sayin

Protecting our Planet - Our Nano-Shield™ locks fertilizer into the plant root instead of diluting into the soil and then running off into oceans. Our science not only allows less fertilizer, higher yield of fruit, and healthier plants but is the environmentally responsible thing for farmers to do. Yes, but if their numbers grow too large they can wipe out entire coral reefs in a week.

Vooia (2 years ago)
Seems harsh to kill them all, they're just living right?
Fudi Mahboio (1 year ago)
electrikviolinresh It's a cycle. From what I know, the problem with outbreaks is waste water. The ecosystem has it's own rules and "flow", but through human interference it spiraled out. It's basically cleaning up problems caused by other problems. Correct me if I'm wrong, it's 2am and I'm still just in my first year of studying biology.

Now I get why Bruxish is a psychic type.... dat Psychic Fangs tho. bye bye toxapex
Nick R (2 years ago)
We've Got Trouble and I have to amdit that Game Freak made it very accurate to it real world inspration from the typeing right down to its destructive coral diet (or in pokemon's case, destructive Corsla diet) bad pun aside, its always cool to see Gamefreak make Pokemon that take inspration from seldom known animals, plants, mytholgical creatures, etc
Christian Flaherty (2 years ago)
Although their behavior points to a stronger relationship with the crown-of-thorns starfish, they're also based off of the helmet urchin. They're little spiky cliff-clinging blobs found all over Hawaii.
Gaile Oxstain (2 years ago)
Just as frightening in real life as they are in the game. Those poor, poor Corsola... Hence why we need a lot more Bruxish in Alolan seas.

what would happen if you accidentally walk on this cots? are there any special medical treatment? is this deadly to humans? thank you.
Amber Jones (3 years ago)
Yeah, and wolves are deadly too. We saw the adverse cascade effect removing them had on ecosystems, why repeat that? Wishfully the "villainous" COTS were relocated, but this report says they were simply killed....
pikapals41 (1 year ago)
Amber Jones yeah, these sea stars are adorable and cool... why kill them? Isnt messing with an ecosystem a fairly bad idea?

You just give the same "White man's" answer to these issues. It's always involves intervention to stop "something" from creating an "extinction" or something else; all the while you (the White man) is above the fray. Above the cause. Never to be implicated in the reason of the imbalance in nature in the first place. You enter and leave with the impression that you are divinely inspired and whatever you do is ordained by the creator. Case in point, the rabbit fiasco in Australia, the Dumb Ass (TM) iron-filing dumping near the Galapagos, the so-called Manifest Destiny against the First Nations of Turtle Island (now called North and South America... And on and on... Now you got the Fool Khalid bin Sultan to finance the same repeated and repeating crap as an answer to a natural event... If you (the White man) had not forced Global Warming with your endless need to worship tokens-of-exchange (money; money with oil; war and money in oil, et al pollutants ) the COTS would not have had much of an effect on the much reduced living coral colonies to begin with.

Excuse "the white man" for actually doing something instead of sitting on their hands. The only way to never fail is to never act. That option is only appealing to worthless losers who tear down other people's accomplishments instead of creating their own.

Now that our BIOT mission has wrapped up, you may be wondering what we are doing next. Next week, our science team will be headed back to the Cook Islands to study the Crown-of-Thorns Starfish, a voracious coral predator.
Crown of Thorns Starfish Crisis - Take 2 In a few weeks, our science team is headed back to the Cook Islands, where we witnessed (and cleaned) a massive crown of thorns starfish outbreak while there on the Global Reef Expedition in 2013. We're headed back to see how the reefs have recovered from this voracious and incredibly fecund coral predator, survey the crown of thorns population on the reefs, and take dna samples of the starfish to see if we can identify where they came from and how they reached these remote reefs.

Can it kill human by its toxic?

I love the video it is very informative :) I am doing a school project on COTS and was wondering who I would need to email to ask for permission to use small parts of the video in my school video project, I would only be asking for permission for small visual scenes (no audio) and of course referencing included. Thank you

The crown of thorns comes from the bible when Jesus died they placed it on his head which punctured his head and made his head bleed. So he died on the cross but then rose again after 3 days.Do you guys see the similarities 😇 -ten year old Isabelle
