I think different genres allow different people to get at themes in their own way. For example, if someone wants to talk to me about racism in book format, they're going to have a much easier time getting their point across if they write a story about a joint elvish-human society that uses magic for electricity where the main character is a half-blood and there's a plot with lots of sword-fighting than if they wrote something set in the real world with a biracial person who does some stuff but there's no real plot and the ending is super unsatisfying. But there are a lot of people who would much rather have the latter and would see the meaning in it easier. So I think it's important that there are different genres written by and for different people, because everyone is different and can express and understand meaning through different mediums.

Absolutely. I think what you said about it being important to have different genres is so true. It's like people often approach art in general as if there is one defining ideal, and everything is just varying levels of good or bad based on how far they are from that ideal. But just like we need a whole bunch of different kinds of people to make the world work, we need a whole bunch of different kinds of art to help all those people feel simulated and understood.

That's why every young person I know puts so much effort into being "genre defying" across most disciplines. Everyone seems to be trying to escape all of the loaded presuppositions everywhere you turn.

That's what I'm here for! :)

Thanks for giving me a thing to fear that I hadn't previously thought to be afraid of.

Let's just hope 'genre defying' doesn't turn into its own genre. Like 'alternative' music or 'indie' music.

I love this, I always feel so thrown off when people ask me what "genre" I write in. Like picking one specific genre in even possible when it comes to writing. Writing should be about telling the story regardless of what people might classify it as.

Absolutely. If anything I feel like all genre elements are just tools, and you have to use whatever combination of tools necessary to make your point. Plus that just makes it more fun to write?
